Bruins GM Chiarelli: ‘I have no plans’ to trade Marchand

Jun 13, 2014, 1:16 PM EDT

Brad Marchand

Trade rumours have been circulating around Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand, however the team’s general manager Peter Chiarelli shot those down on Friday.

According to Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com, these latest rumours involved Marchand and San Jose Sharks veteran forward Patrick Marleau.

“I have had no discussions for Marchand and I have no plans to trade him,” Chiarelli told CSNNE.com. “I don’t make it a practice to respond to reports in the social media, but occasionally it is necessary.”

Interesting, because this isn’t the first time Chiarelli has had to speak on Marchand trade speculation.

The 26-year-old winger has certainly created his share of controversy across the league – remember him in Vancouver this past December, taunting the Canucks and their fans in Boston’s first visit back to Rogers Arena since winning the Stanley Cup there in 2011? – and that has led to talk that perhaps the Bruins, fed up with his act, would look to move him.

Chiarelli addressed Marchand’s issue of sometimes crossing the line between effective agitator and aggressive forward to costing himself and the team in May, after the Bruins were knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs in the second round by rival Montreal.

“Every year I seem to have this comment about him finding a balance between irritant/agitator and real good player. I think sometimes his antics gets in the way,” said Chiarelli.

“This has been a discussion I’ve had, [coach Claude Julien’s] had over the course of three, four, five years, and it’s a challenge for Brad to play that aggressive way and not to cross the line.”

Marchand is just about to enter the second year of a four-year deal with the Bruins. It comes with an annual cap hit of $4.5 million.

He’s also coming off a frustrating post-season, in which he was held without a goal in 12 games, and took two different trips to the penalty box in a Game 7 loss to Montreal.

Marchand is an @ss hole but I would love to have him in Detroit! Bring back some of that D Mac and Homer agitator

  2. jcmeyer10 - Jun 13, 2014 at 1:51 PM

Putting up points is a cure-all. He pots those two empty nets we aren’t having this conversation.

    • sixchr - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:05 PM

No we aren’t. He puts those two in and he’s still only scored 2 goals in like 20 games. That’s not even factoring in his ridiculous antics and reputation calls that are now hurting the team. This was a reasonable conversation last offseason and it’s a more than reasonable conversation this offseason.

      • jcmeyer10 - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:58 PM

Yes and no. Are we saying man, Marchand is just on the line of being dirty? Yes. Are we talking about trading him? No.

The whole point is, you can get away with a lot of stuff when you produce. When you stop producing, you are the squeakiest of the wheels and get taken care of first.

    • thesportsjudge - Jun 13, 2014 at 5:16 PM

For the love or whatever anyone believes in, don’t use the term “pots” or any variation. Douche-kazoo Haggerty uses that all the time.

      • jcmeyer10 - Jun 13, 2014 at 7:30 PM

I will stop just because you came up with the phrase douche kazoo. That made me laugh and I will give back because you gave me humor.

      • thesportsjudge - Jun 13, 2014 at 10:52 PM

Haha, fair enough! Ya, I started using that term. I hope it catches on. I really did see “Haggs” using the “pots” and other variations on csnne.com articles every article. It literally made my stomach twist.

  3. bildomac07 - Jun 13, 2014 at 1:56 PM

I don’t think they’ll move him, but honestly nothing the Bruins do this offseason would surprise me. If they do move him it’s tough to say Marleau would be a fit from a cap perspective as the bruins are already tight to the cap with guys they are looking to lock up. Swapping Marchand for Marleau adds 2.1M for a 1 for 1 roster swap…

  4. sixchr - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:07 PM

Chiarelli is generally a very honest GM and he doesn’t lie. I hope he’s lying. If they’ve taken trading Marchand off the board, after his playoff disappearing act the last 3 years AND his ridiculous antics, I’m gonna barf. I wanted him gone last offseason, I’m sick of him now.

I think Benning and the Bs will be trading partners. Go ahead and laugh, but I see a deal – Edler and Kesler for Marchand and Lucic.

    • micklethepickle - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:36 PM

Lucic is too scared to ever go back to Vancouver. He would probably live in Seattle and commute in with a full team of bodyguards. Or do you not remember the summer after Boston won the Cup and he got his panties all in a twist?

        That post is embarrassing

you should change your name to micklethepicklesmoocher

    • mattlion - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:50 PM

The 2 best players in that deal are Lucic and Marchand at this point. Anyone who watched Kesler this year knows he’s a shell of what he was and may be past the point of being a top-line factor…. and let’s not get into Edler’s decline.

    • sixchr - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:51 PM

I think it would be more likely that you would see Lucic and Boychuk for Kesler and Edler. Boychuk is due for a big contract after this year and he would flip easily with Edler. If the Bruins were to make a trade like this I would be worried that they’re changing their team’s DNA TOO much.

    • theskinsman - Jun 14, 2014 at 5:14 AM

You see that trade? I see stupid posts.

  6. dboldave - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:34 PM

I’m a Boston fan and I’m leaning towards wanting them to trade him. He’s skilled, he’s great on the PK and he can get under the skin of other players. On the other hand, I’m tired of the antics. As one of the few smaller, faster players on the B’s, I expected him to have an impact in the Montreal series. He did but he helped the Habs more than he did Boston.

I don’t know how I’d feel about Marleau though. He’s a pure offensive player and guys like that don’t usually fit in well with Julien.

  7. oneil1234 - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:36 PM

33-22 that’s the most retarted thing I’ve ever heard. How are people so dumb and not realize it?

    • thatsnuckinfuts - Jun 13, 2014 at 4:34 PM

      LOL Irony

  8. 33to22 - Jun 13, 2014 at 2:57 PM

    oneil1234 “retarted” 😆😆😆

    • hawkeedawg - Jun 13, 2014 at 6:03 PM

33-22, first, that would be “retarDed”. Second, the word hasn’t been used by adults for at least 10 years. Grow Up

      • 33to22 - Jun 13, 2014 at 7:22 PM

hawkeedag, If you would have looked at the comments thread a little closer, you probably would have directed your scolding to the actual offender (oneil1234). Go Nucks! ; )

  9. stixzidinia - Jun 13, 2014 at 3:48 PM

He has no plans to trade him because no other team in their right minds would trade for that guy.

  10. papajack1259 - Jun 13, 2014 at 4:38 PM

When the front office gives you the atta boy your as good as gone.
Hey Marchie how long you wore the Spoke B …not including tomorrow…….he should of planted the two empty nets and two posts and he would be this towns hero….right Wes Welker….you know it

  11. joeman26 - Jun 13, 2014 at 5:36 PM

flip Boychuk and Marchand for a D Man and use Spooner in his spot or sign a URFA….Chara is getting near the end..to many minutes

  12. phtjoey - Jun 13, 2014 at 5:41 PM

He’s got talent but it’s being wasted by his agitator antics.

  13. titansbro - Jun 13, 2014 at 7:13 PM

I’m a bit sick of his Hab-like antics. He’s a good player & an effective rat, so you should be able get a decent return for him. If so, trade him. Trade or cut Chris Kelly too. I like him but he’s overpaid.

  14. iowa02 - Jun 13, 2014 at 9:52 PM

Sure Peter. You have no plans. Now. *wink wink* That sounds like something he said about another former Bruin who currently plays in Dallas.

  15. beergold - Jun 15, 2014 at 6:41 AM

He’s headed to Toronto for Reimer and a 12 pack of Sam Adams!
