Nathan MacKinnon scores OT winner, Avalanche take 3-2 series lead

Apr 27, 2014, 12:43 AM EDT

How quickly things can change in hockey, especially in these Stanley Cup playoffs. It seems no lead has really been safe, and there was evidence of that Saturday.

The Colorado Avalanche entered the third period of Game 5 against the Minnesota Wild with a one-goal lead and a chance to retake the series lead. In less than two minutes, the Avalanche went from in the lead to chasing the Wild.

Then came P.A. Parenteau and his controversial tying goal in the final minute to send the game to overtime, followed by 18-year-old rookie Nathan MacKinnon‘s winner early in the extra frame.

So after an up-and-down roller coaster ride in Denver, the Avalanche came away with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory. Colorado does, at the end of the night, come away with a 3-2 series lead, as well.

Zach Parise scored on a perfect wrist shot to tie the game at 2-2 early in the third period, and Kyle Brodziak wired a slap shot past Semyon Varlamov shortly after to give Minnesota the lead. Two Wild goals in 1:51.

Twice in this game, the Avalanche were able to gain the lead. Cody McLeod scored short-handed to open the scoring for Colorado in the second period, his goal the result of a rare Ryan Suter mistake and turnover in the neutral zone. But the Wild came right back 1:13 later on Matt Moulson‘s first goal of these playoffs.

The chances of a Colorado comeback were hindered late in the third period by a Gabriel Landeskog unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty for giving Minnesota goalie Darcy Kuemper a snow-shower after the whistle.

Head coach Patrick Roy pulled Varlamov for the extra skater with about 2:25 remaining in regulation. His bold move, and we’ve become used to these, paid off with the Parenteau equalizer.

Home ice has been a major advantage in this series. Neither team has been able to win on the road.

The Wild won both games in Minnesota, and if that trend continues, it will mean this series gets extended to a seventh and deciding game. But, after tonight’s game, who knows what will happen?

You can thank the refs for that win avs

    • tru2joelu4eva - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:44 AM

      Balls. On. The table.

    • hockeyflow33 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:49 AM

Did you think that when they called the unsportsmanlike on the Avs in the final minutes of the third?

      • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:52 AM

        Of course he didn’t.

      • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:55 AM

that was deserved and they owed us many other from earlier horrible calls where they took both players instead of just an av or a wild player instead of the av who committed the penalty.

Id be happy too if my team was gift wrapped a win

      • hockeyflow33 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:57 AM

If you want games called properly, then you would not be calling for “owed” penalties, that’s not how the game should be called.

My team is the Bruins so I have no love for either team in this game.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:58 AM

That was a good call and Landeskog had been pushing the envelope all game. He had it coming.

      • hockeyflow33 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:04 AM

It was such a stupid penalty to take and I thought Roenick was extremely out of line chastising the ref for calling it.

      • edinatherealhockeytownusa - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:17 PM

HA the Bruins, just think if Lucic gets suspended instead of being fined, he doesn’t impact the the next 3 games..interesting..how about that east coast bias?? I have money on the B’s to win the cup too…the NHL is a joke. College hockey is this best hockey to watch, used to be HS until they started bailing to juniors

      • hockeyflow33 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:58 PM

What are you talking about? Why would he be suspended 3 games?

    • avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:49 AM

Wha. Strictly outplayed. Refs sucked for both teams. Sorry loser. Outplayed again by the Avs! Out.played.again.

      • lordfletcher - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:54 AM

I’m all for stirring the pot but you don’t truly believe that do you?

      • avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:58 AM

Landy called for a snow job. Really. You are whining about the what? I can’t believe the crying. Man have you girls lost it. Plenty of bad calls to go around. Refs didn’t beat you, Avs beat you. Clearly outplayed you again.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:00 AM

haha… there you are! Outplayed?!? Seriously? It was evenly matched except for the out-officiating in the avs favor.

      • lordfletcher - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:03 AM

Doesn’t matter who you cheer for dippy do. It was obvious, national media agrees. Its not that hard to see.

I said congrats to the Avs for taking advantage but let’s not kid ourselves. End of the day the zebras shouldn’t impact a game like they did tonight.

Going 7. See you in lala land Jim

      • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:04 AM

too funny this brat avscups never played a game of hockey in her life like she claims…..The only outplaying that been done is the Wild dominating games 3 and 4 and the refs doing there best to give the avs 1,3, and 5.

If you want to throw down in fisticuffs, fine. I’ve got Jack Johnson and Tom O’Leary waiting for you, right here

      • avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:10 AM

Sorry cupcake. We all know you never played. No hockey player would ever whine like you. Unless maybe your from Richfield. Or Hopkins? Eh. Where you star at?

      • avsfan2014 - Apr 27, 2014 at 10:05 AM

huh? Avs got destroyed in Minnesota, and the games are even in Colorado. Avs are up a game thanks to the officiating. Kind of embarrassed myself.

      • mnwildfan1207 - May 1, 2014 at 1:40 PM

Outplayed by the Avs whose season is now OVER? You can’t honestly believe the Avs outplayed the Wild. Maybe you’re as blind as those refs were.

    • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:00 AM

He’s just pointing out your homer hypocrisy.

Calls were missed for both teams. Overall it was a poor night of officiating. The real difference was the Avs took advantage of the opportunities where the Wild failed to.

This will probably go 7. So you have a good chance to come back here and stir the pot for Wednesday.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:01 AM

what calls were missed for the Avs?

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:06 AM

Start naming them. Put up or shut up.

  2. mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:44 AM

The refs beat us this time. We’ll be back though.

    • avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:04 AM

Night night loser. Gotta get back the celebration. Losing sucks huh? Better restock your tissues crybaby!

      • avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:21 AM

Fisticuffs. I don’t hit little girls cupcake. That’s not nice.

      • 19to77 - Apr 27, 2014 at 2:33 AM

Oh, Christ, you’re almost as terrible as blomfeld and you’re a “fan” of my team. This is just embarassing. Wild fans: our bad for this guy. Avscup: you sure talk a lot for a guy who just made his account tonight. How many hours ago did you decide you were an Avalanche fan?

  3. lordfletcher - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:45 AM

Zebras with four assists. Good for the Avs to take advantage but come f…. Ing on!!!

  4. vstar1us - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:46 AM

The Lord Jesus Christ let the refs cheat for you! I would kick everyone of the asses in a alley if the would show up!

    • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:05 AM

        Who?

      • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:21 AM

while apparently youre the nut cup of all the combined avs player, no surprises here.

      • 19to77 - Apr 27, 2014 at 2:36 AM

Lot of Internet tough guys out on patrol tonight. Getting a great laugh out of your antics, boys. Keep up the peacock act. We’re all very intimidated, I promise.

  5. hockeyfan11 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:47 AM

I just don’t understand how the refs could blow that many calls. Thats your job. Thats what you get paid to do. Raise your damn hand and blow your little whistle. Thats 2 games now that should be the Wilds.

  6. vstar1us - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:48 AM

Mp , really the beat us twice watch the game

    • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:09 AM

I wonder if there is corruption at the officiating level?

      • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:12 AM

its all about trying to make this go to 7 games

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:14 AM

It’s not that hard to think they’re bought to some degree. It happens in soccer, I’m sure it happens in fighting, and it could happen in the NHL. I’m not just saying this because of this game, but when it happens to your own team and you see it firsthand, it gets you thinking. It could happen, no doubt.

      • lordfletcher - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:13 AM

There is no corruption… Just a horribly string of bad calls and “luck” for Wild.

        Look silly saying anything more

        Cheers

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:16 AM

fletcher – I get that it looks silly, but it is not impossible.

      • whiteoutavalanche - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:18 AM

Yep the whole world is against the wild. Especially the refs. The penalty on Holden was tge biggest gift of the game.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:20 AM

Not against the Wild. But to stretch out the series is not that unfathomable. It’s a business first, a fair palying field second.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:21 AM

The penalty on Holden? The boarding penalty?!? HAHA….. ok.

      • whiteoutavalanche - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:22 AM

        Hahaha. Man this is rich

      • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:23 AM

exactly mp, were talking from a bidness perspective not a screw the wild perspective

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:24 AM

OK, whiteoutavs, exactly what about the Holden penalty was unfair? Keep in mind that “gifts” don’t mean as much two minutes into the game as the do 1 minute from the end.

      • whiteoutavalanche - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:32 AM

Hey if you think the penalty on Holden in the third period was legit then that is your prerogative. No matter to me. Avs three games, wild two.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:39 AM

Holden??? What are you talking about? He took a penalty in the first, but nothing in the third. STOP SMOKING.

  7. guitarisgood4u - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:48 AM

    ugh.

  8. krishavy3 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:49 AM

If by “roller coaster,” you mean the officiating, then yes, what a f*&%ing ride it was. I still feel sick.

  9. nodindenver - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:50 AM

Minny fans blaming the refs when we have multiple players on the shelf including one via a nasty cheap shot by one of their goons. How does that taste with a couple of 100 million dollar contracts? The state of hockey in disarray; the kids just kicked your ***. Chew on that!

    • avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:52 AM

      Spot on. Whiney bytches.

      • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:03 AM

    • lordfletcher - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:55 AM

Kicked ass via winning by one and in an extremely tight series mostly dominated by Wild??? With controversy?

      Keep smoking pal

      • avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:01 AM

3-2 dude. That’s all I need. LMFAO at you crybabies. Heard all my life after we always win.

      • 19to77 - Apr 27, 2014 at 2:50 AM

Always win? Really? Now I know you just jumped on the bandwagon. That Nathan MacKinnon guy? Remember him? Not that you would know, but we drafted him first overall last year. Meaning we won the draft lottery. Meaning we were the second-worst team in the NHL last year. “Always win” my ass. This is the first year in nearly a decade where we’ve actually looked pretty good. Which I suppose you would know if you didn’t just jump on the bandwagon tonight.

    • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:57 AM

you must not have watched the game. fairly evenly played with the wild taking the slight edge……Welcome to hockey lad

Fairly? More like mostly played in your end.

    • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 2:18 AM

Do you know what happened when our first line went on the shelf? We hit the longest winning streak of the year and our second line players stepped up and answered the call. Avs don’t have the depth, it is true. But only Barrie was hurt as a result from the Wild. And cooke is also sitting from that incident. He was on fire.

    • mnwildfan1207 - May 1, 2014 at 1:45 PM

nodindenver, you can chew on your loss for a whole year until your season starts again.

  10. avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:51 AM

Awesome victory again. Never a doubt.

  11. nicofthenorthstar - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:51 AM

What an embarrassment to the NHL. Totally unprofessional job by the officials. They should just wear avs jerseys next time. At least be honest.

    • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:58 AM

they deserve suspensions lets face it they made a mockery of the game

  12. lateralus982 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:55 AM

Avscup…..dude what games have you been watching? The Wild have outplayed the Avs almost every game this series.

    • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:04 AM

Yup. Exept number two. Every game the Wild have been the better team over all.

    • whiteoutavalanche - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:06 AM

Minus the three games they have won of course…

      • strictlythedanks - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:15 AM

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:34 AM

No, only the second game. The other two games, the Wild played way better.

      • whiteoutavalanche - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:39 AM

Almost . ‘Cept for the three losses eh loser?

  13. whiteoutavalanche - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:01 AM

Minnie fans are biggest whiners. Good news avs, you are ine game away from putting the whole state of Minnesota into a state of depression. They are already blaming the refs….pansies. I am looking at you strictlytheschwag

    • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:05 AM

I don’t think it will matter. The whole state of Minnesota must be pretty used to failure by now whenever it comes to any major sport.

      • lordfletcher - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:27 AM

        Sadly very true

        One step above Cleveland

    • mnwildfan1207 - May 1, 2014 at 7:11 PM

Minnesota fans are only whiners about our teams that actually do suck, because, let’s be honest, most of them do. We don’t whine about the officiating, we whine about the actual team sucking so hard. The Wild is our only glimmer of hope in a sport, so sorry we’re not sorry for whining about the ridiculously poor officiating because we were clearly the better team in this series. Colorado fans who watched the game had to have realized how off-base the officiating was and how many gift-wrapped calls they got their way.

And you want to talk about whiners, go ahead and look at the Avs fans booing and whining about Suter every time he touched the puck.

Also, you talk about MN being in a state of depression. I invite you to live in a state that has had more than 50 days of below zero temperatures. You’ll know a whole new level of depression living here AND dealing with your series loss.

In case you missed that, your season is over. You lost.

  14. rgledz - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:04 AM

Say what you want about the unsportsmanlike at the end, that was well earned with the assault that he put forth on Coyle with no call. He could have been called for 3 penalties on that sequence. The two worst and most embarrassing misses were the no call on the obvious hold on Coyle with the open net……. and the Avs were offside on the game winner. The refs handed that game to Colorado, that’s plain to see and the league should be embarrassed to have those refs representing them. Avs fans are desperate so they’ll take the win and act like they earned it.

    • whiteoutavalanche - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:04 AM

      Ok bro…

    • phxyotes - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:15 AM

Avs fans aren’t desperate. They’ve won a few cups. How many has the wild won? Oh wait a second……

Maybe that drunk driving I’m a loser and killed my teammate Heatley will be a healthy scratch again.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:36 AM

        wow…. low……

  15. jason9696 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:05 AM

The Wild got jobbed twice on the game tying goal. But they had a chance to go up two goals on their late power play and couldn’t do it.

I think there’s a very good chance this series goes 7.

  16. blkeskimo1785 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:10 AM

Better game by Colorado, overall good game by both teams… questionable calls and non-calls…Sometimes it’s all about the right bounces! :

    • avscup - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:20 AM

Fair comment. Must not be from MN. They be cry babies.

  17. avfanforlife - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:24 AM

Good calls – Bad calls – Both ways.
Av’s played better, then Wild played better.
That’s why it is a best of 7 series to make up for the BS that happens.
AV’s find a way to win – as they have done all season. Roy has them in it mentally for 60 minutes plus every game. That’s what it’s all about!
Av’s WILL ADVANCE TO ROUND 2. Hopefully Monday. Go AV’s!!!!

  18. hockeyfan11 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:39 AM

Atleast the Wild win like men. No bullish*it excuses like “We shut ourselves down”

    • mackattack29 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:45 AM

Are you kidding? The first thing suter did was come up with an excuse lol..

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 2:23 AM

Excuse? Try photo evidence all over the place. It wasn’t an excuse, it was an observation.

  19. mackattack29 - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:44 AM

Missing duchene the best player for either team by a good measure, missing tanguay, the best playmaker on the avs and a great veteran player with tons of playoff experience, missing mitchell, an incredible possession player who is like a Swiss army knife who can fill in top six or bottom six and pretty much can do it all very well. Then there’s barrie.. Our best defenseman besides EJ, incredibly skilled and the most clutch scorer for either team. Oh how I would love for my teams only disadvantage to be a few tough calls to swallow.. which has happened to both teams through out this series. Open your eyes minny fans… If we had even 1 of those players back it would make a HUGE difference.. let alone having all of them back. Stop complaining. You guys are lucky to be in this series.

    • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 2:25 AM

Lucky? Do you know what happened when our stars got injured? We kicked a** and took names. Our second line stepped up and answered the call. The Avs could learn a little from that instead of relying on their magical rookie to carry the team.

      • mackattack29 - Apr 27, 2014 at 4:05 AM

Oh yeah cuz all the avs did when they lost everyone except barrie was win the division title… what place did minny finish in again. The wild sure seem like the ones who could learn a lot from what the avs have already accomplished this year.

      • mp1131211 - Apr 27, 2014 at 4:07 AM

Then stop listing all the players you have out, dumb a**. Besides, you won the title because the Blues collapsed!

      • avscup - Apr 28, 2014 at 10:38 AM

Funny you keep missing the fact that all teams suffer injuries. The Avs have had plenty. Tanguay, Duchene, Mitchell, Sarich, Wilson. Still, like MN , the team rallies around and players step up. You mention the 2nd line stepping up. Well the Avs finished where in the standings? Where in this series?

      • mp1131211 - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:08 PM

They finished first because the Blues had an epic collapse and the Hawks also struggled. Sorry, Avs are good, but not great. They are carried by Duchene and Oreilly.

      • avscup - Apr 28, 2014 at 8:55 PM

And Landy, Mackinnon and a D corps that scored 46 goals. You haven’t seen Duchene yet!

While St. Louis struggled (the Avs helped that) Colorado played great without Duchy and Mitcell. No they are not great, but better than MN.

They have been better than the Wild, actually. Just not in this series. Which is why it is infuriating that they lead the series. As I said, they don’ have a separate column for wins and tainted wins. But if they do, you’d have at least one in each column.

I don’t care what you call them. A win is a win.

Our best goalie has MS, we went through 100 goalies this season, and still make the playoffs, you still can’t score on the powerplay, our current goalie has played what 4 maybe 5 playoff games in his 30 game career.

You can’t be serious. Are the moderators lame on here you guys? Don’t know, I am asking. They are either really slow or just lame. I can’t believe they didn’t post my comment. It was not vulgar, disrespectful to anyone or over the top. Wow. If they don’t print it, I guess I will be done with this site too.

There’s an automatic filter for swearing. Silly, I know, but your comment was probably just filtered for an idly-placed curse word. Nobody actually cares enough to review and decide to post or not post comments on this site. End of the day, it’s just a hockey blog. Calm down.

see you cry babies Monday night. Hopefully the addition of Duchene is enough to finish hockey in Minnesota so you all can cheer for the Twinkies or the Vikings or whomever is the next team to break your hearts.

yeah, maybe we’ll get 15 shots this time, and win 1-0. not likely. our only chance is game 7 and some more lucky breaks.

Coming from a Hawks fan, the outcome isn’t the outcome I wanted, but this is such a great series…

after 5 games, one thing is for sure. the Wild should win the series, but they are not going to because they didn’t get the home-ice advantage. better luck next year.

The wild have just been awarded game 6 and game 7, NHL wants to do the right thing, set good examples for the youth hockey players watching the game. A kid that doesn’t understand offsides could tell that was blantant offsides. #fairplaypoint

  25. edinatherealhockeytownusa - Apr 27, 2014 at 11:43 AM

When did Tim Donaghy become the head of NHL officiating…this a F****** joke, PHT you better get this right, take your blinders off Cam. Does NBC have that big of a straggle hold on your headlines? The wild got jobbed more then anything I’ve ever witnessed before. I am a die hard hockey fan, I live, eat, sleep, breathe hockey, I’m one more F up by the officials and the NHL allowing it to happen, from never watching again. At a point when the playoff ratings are higher then recent memory, not going to help the cause of growing the game, when you blatantly fix games. This isn’t the NBA and the draft lottery for Patrick freeking Ewing.
4-1 series victory for the wild…I hope to GOD the Wild pull this series out, but I feel the league wants this series to end in game 6 after another rigging on Monday. Pathetic…

When did Bettman marry Norm Greed’s daughter??

I noticed that Wild fans are complaining about the missed call on Heatley’s slash to Hejda which resulted in a broken stick that eventually lead to a Wild goal and put them up 3-2…interesting how this works.

Here’s a link where you can see that: http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=84176943&postcount=602

excuse the typo, Wild fans aren’t complaining….

  28. wildgotscrewed - Apr 27, 2014 at 1:23 PM

I am done watching the NHL I will not buy anymore let NHL products. The officiating at the wild game reminded me of a WWF wrestling match. Its riged its all about money.

  29. dwags66 - Apr 27, 2014 at 4:32 PM

That was a missed call…when you slow it down. I believe that I saw 2-3 offsides from both teams all game, although its got to be tougher trying to catch the Avs because they’re so much faster!
However, the goal was scored because Minny didn’t cover a trailing Parenteau. They all had their heads turned to the corner, which left the back door wide open.
And Varly kept the Wild out in OT, that first minute was ferocious!
You always want to root for the team that wins with skill alone, but Cups are not often won that way exclusively.

If I were a wild fan I would be complaining more about the lack of goals from their overpaid top players then the poor officiating.
