Blackhawks’ Toews: ‘It did feel like we were playing shinny hockey’

Mar 2, 2014, 2:00 AM EDT

Jonathan Toews had a large impact on the Chicago Blackhawks and their 5-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Saturday’s Stadium Series game at Soldier Field.

The Blackhawks’ captain scored twice – including a beauty in the second period in which he dangled Penguins’ defenseman Brooks Orpik then slid the puck five-hole on Marc-Andre Fleury – and had an assist. The more than 60,000 fans that braved the cold added to the atmosphere, as did the weather, which produced a constant and at times heavy snowfall throughout the game.

“It honestly did feel like we were playing shinny hockey in the backyard,” Toews told reporters afterward.

“We were playing smart in our own end the way we normally would. But we were making plays and just throwing everything on net and hoping for the best. So I think after everything was said and done, we had a lot of fun out there playing.”

He would have a claim on ‘Best Player in the League’ if not for that Crosby guy.

I’m not trying to make excuses for the Penguins because there is no excuse for their play last night, but I do think the weather did play a small part in the slaughtering of the Penguins last night. While it’s cool and I do think they are pretty cool, it just affects the game to much. I think if this game was played indoors it would have been a more fast paced game, and probably a little bit more competitive as well, again there really is no excuse for the Penguins play last night though. These two teams play later this year, I’m interested to see how different these two games are.

I’d agree with you 100%, except for the fact both teams played in the weather. Plus, the pens have played outdoors 3 time to the blackhawks 2. They didn’t show up. Could not win a faceoff to save their life. Captain Serious got the best of Captain Canada. :) in all seriousness, no team can give up that many odd man rushes in a game.

Even Bylsma said indoor/outdoor wouldn’t have made a difference last night. Chicago would’ve dominated regardless.
Despite not wanting to make excuses, that’s exactly what you’re doing.
Last night you said this game opened your eyes and that Chicago is on a different level. Now it’s because of the weather.
      Good grief Charlie Brown

And Penguins fans wonder why so many people dislike them…

I assume somebody forced you to make this excuse against your will, since you made it very clear you didn’t actually want to engage in such behavior.

Sure sounds like you are making excuses
