Welcome Cam Ward to the trade rumor mill

Jan 15, 2014, 5:19 PM EDT

A couple of tweets has the interwebs buzzing about a possible trade involving Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward:

Ward is currently on injured reserve with a lower-body ailment. The 29-year-old former Conn Smythe Trophy winner has struggled this season (6-7-5, .895 save percentage); however, his career .910 save percentage in 450 appearances could garner some interest.

Signed through 2015-16, Ward’s contract is big in terms of salary and cap hit — per CapGeek, his hit ranks fifth among all NHL goalies — but small in remaining term.

There’s also the matter of Carolina’s two other goalies, Anton Khudobin and Justin Peters, being pending unrestricted free agents.

Brilliant goalie, but he’s made of glass.

The guy had a good team skating in front of him and caught fire during the right time of the year– 8 years ago. Since then?…(seriously, anyone know how he matches up statistically during the course of his career to the league median? Right up there with Price and Miller!?)
Giguere was able to backstop his team to two trips to the finals within a span of a few years, and Ducks management had the good sense to cut him loose; that’s business in the cap era. Canes management should’ve taken a leaf out of their book– about 4 years ago.

Why not come play for your old coach Paul Maurice in Winnipeg and try to get your mojo back? We all know Pavelec is not the answer.

Not just the injuries. There’s another goalie who the pad regulations took down a peg.

After tonight you may want to expect a call from Vancouver.
