Discuss: Late goal helps Rangers best Blackhawks on Rivalry Night

The New York Rangers got off to a terrific start, bent but didn’t completely break in the second period and pulled out a win over the defending Stanley Cup champions in Chicago on Wednesday.

The Rangers got a goal from Carl Hagelin late in third period and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Rivalry Night.

Let’s discuss:

  • Not the greatest start or finish to the evening for Blackhawks’ goalie Corey Crawford. Didn’t look sharp on New York’s first two goals of the evening and the late Hagelin goal, which gave the Rangers the win, will sting.
  • The Rangers are on a bit of a roll. Six wins in their last 10 games. They’ve also jumped up into third in the Metropolitan Division, three points back of the Philadelphia Flyers.
  • The Blackhawks lost for the first time in regulation since Dec. 14.
  • The Blackhawks got goals from Jonathan Toews and Brandon Bollig just 1:48 apart in the second period to get Chicago back on even terms after trailing 2-0 in the first period.
  • Hard to believe that for two Original Six teams, the Blackhawks and Rangers haven’t played against each other since March of 2012. How about that lockout?
  • Henrik Lundqvist made 35 saves against a pretty good team. Wasn’t that long ago he was struggling, as too was the team in front of him.

now BLOMFELD, don’t rag on the HAWKS so deeply ! i know i said things last night ( that were true) but i should be allowed to ( being a HAWKS fan, plus seniority) that being said , as of tonight, the HAWKS were in 2nd place in the NHL 2 points behind the DUCKS at 69 points with a game in hand. maybe it is part of a plan to not test the curse of the PRESIDENTS TROPHY winner again ? BUT,as i look DOWN the standings list i see the KINGS with 57 points …. 10 points behing the CHICAGO NHL CLUB… although they do have 2 games in hand ( winning them both would make 61 points…… still 9 points back ) BUT as we all know , anything is possible ! i do thank you for your assistance in the war with jhaegs ( sounds like a terrorist group ? ) ! you are a comrad ! yours until the US drinks CANADA DRY ………. the SLY

*** earlier today on the outskirts of town ***

Blomfeld: halt ! … just where do you boys think you’re heading ?

Jhag & friends: uh … we was just head’n into town ?

Slysipops: well word is that you boys have been talking trash about the LA Kings ?

Jhag & friends: heck, we ain’t done that ! … and if we did, we was just kidd’n like ?

Sportsfan69: watch it Blom, they’re all armed !

Jhag & friends: now look here … we ain’t want no trouble with you men …

Blomfeld: it’s too late for that … let ‘em have it … KAPOW ! .. KABOOM ! .. KAZAAM !

    • slysipops - Jan 10, 2014 at 5:51 PM

once again , THANK YOU BLOMS……….. YOU DA MAN ! you make what could get boring at times fun, thats were we should all be !

  2. slysipops - Jan 8, 2014 at 11:33 PM

HAWKS score twice quickly to tie……….AND then go back to sleep and loose. maybe the dreams about the olympics ….or thoughts about the …17 SECONDS VIDEO ….but whatever…. zzzzzzzzzzzz and loose ! too many players not pulling their weght ( or salaries ) in games like this. points in the tail end of a 4-1 lead mean squat it’s in a game like this that a score really counts.seems like the team is in some kind of lull in these close games lately. WAKE UP COACHING STAFF! maybe RAANTA needs to go back in goal. KANE’S body language in the last couple games speaks for itself .the playoffs aren’t going to be about 5-1 or 6-2 games …..time to STEP IT UP AND WIN THE CLOSE ONES !

    • jhaegs - Jan 8, 2014 at 11:49 PM

Hawks battled hard, especially in the last 5min. Had a lot of good chances, but Lundqvist stood on his head and they couldn’t catch a bounce. Soft goals given up by both goalies, so this one could’ve gone either way.

      Also it’s LOSE, not LOOSE.
Hawks LOSE. Your mom is LOOSE… See the difference?

      • slysipops - Jan 9, 2014 at 12:00 AM

talking about someone’s mother is real classy ,a$$hole ! maybe your home experience is not a good one? if so you have my sympathy! now just go back to the basement and your crayons and coloring books.

      • jhaegs - Jan 9, 2014 at 12:10 AM

Wigging out on your team after one regulation loss in the last month. Classy…

      • jhaegs - Jan 9, 2014 at 12:13 AM

Also, that is about the 4th time you’ve used the crayon insult. Get some new material…

Plus, I’m allowed to use markers now so the joke is on you!

      • blomfeld - Jan 9, 2014 at 12:35 AM

Blomfeld: Tiger one to Tiger two, over ?

        Tiger Two: Yes comrade ?

Blomfeld: Tiger two, blow that piece of junk called ‘Jhag’ off the bridge !

Tiger Two: consider it done comrade … however what about comrade Slysipops ?

Blomfeld: he’s being assisted now by special action units of Panzer Group Tucker …

Tiger Two: yes of course … very well then, the target ‘Jhag’ will now be destroyed !

      • c9castine - Jan 9, 2014 at 2:56 PM

im tired of hearing about 1 regulation loss. these guys have lost a lot of hockey games lately and the most out of the top teams in the league. pittsburgh and anaheim are the top ROW teams in each conference and then boston and st. louis even though they’ve played less games. so chicago should think about practicing the shootout more.

that being said, chill out hawks fans. geez. they are still one of the best they’ll be hot again before this months halfway mark.

      • slysipops - Jan 9, 2014 at 7:58 PM

i’m impressed that you pay so much attention to what i say. keep it up …you may learn something . not that it is of any of your business, but i have probably been a HAWKS fan longer than you have been on GOD’S earth .i am not some trendy that jumped on the bandwagon since they won a couple of cups. i have played rat hockey with a few of them. i have met and had conversations a few others ( BOBBY HULL, KEITH MAGNUSON, STAN MAKITA, REED SIMPSON, KRIVO KRASOV ) i used to vent to JIM BLAINEY via email when he was in the front office during some really bad times for BLACKHAWK fans, even got free tickets to the UNITED CENTER from him ( sometimes the squeeky wheel gets the grease) . anywway, a loss is a loss…no team is going to win them all . this team has the talent to beat any other team any day……….as long as the effort is there .

      • blomfeld - Jan 9, 2014 at 11:33 PM

Comrade Slysipops … that’s fantastic man ! … the bottom line is that it’s a ‘privilege’ for us to be having electronic contact with you here at PHT … with all the joking aside, you’re undoubtedly a ‘quality’ life form and I say praise be for that ! :)

        GO SLYSIPOPS !!!

        GO BLACKHAWKS !!!!!!

Great road win against the best team in hockey for the Blue Shirts. The speed at hunting of the puck has been progressing very nicely culminating with a beautiful performance tonight. I feel like I’m beating a dead horse with the JT Miller chatter but AV has to play this guy. Very line he has been on the last three weeks has been outstanding. He needs to find a spot for this kid.

  4. cspsrbums - Jan 8, 2014 at 11:44 PM

Hawks suck Hawks choke Hawks are a big joke

    • slysipops - Jan 9, 2014 at 12:03 AM

      • cofran2004 - Jan 9, 2014 at 7:02 AM

Weren’t you just brow-beating the hawks all the way at the top of the comments section…? Why don’t you go shove your crayons up your bum? Then you’ll be able to color in the toilet when you poo.

  5. nyeagles10 - Jan 9, 2014 at 7:31 AM

hawks fans arre bugging out when there team doesn’t even have double digits in the loss column .In janurary … wow

    • c9castine - Jan 9, 2014 at 2:59 PM

i said up there they have 17 losses. they were given a point in 9 of them. none of the other top teams in each conference have near that many OT losses. i also think their fans should chill out though.

  6. polishblue - Jan 9, 2014 at 9:05 AM

“Hard to believe that for two Original Six teams, the Blackhawks and Rangers haven’t played against each other since March of 2012. How about that lockout?”

SO why is this Rivalry Night again? lol

    • cofran2004 - Jan 9, 2014 at 9:36 AM

No rivals really played last night. The closest thing to a rivalry that went on is an original 6 match-up.

  7. sportsfan69 - Jan 9, 2014 at 9:14 PM

    Conrad Blomfeld,

The NYRangers are starting to get-it in gear. Heir Lundqvist needs to maintain that fierce and confidence like in last night’s game to lead the team to the Playoffs and Finals.

    • blomfeld - Jan 9, 2014 at 11:47 PM

Comrade Sportsfan69 – I first saw this move at a drive-in in upstate New York in circa 1967 as an eight year old … and today as a 54 year old man, this is still one of my favorite ‘all time’ movies … anyway, take confidence in the fact that the Rangers have now started a winter counter-attack lead by comrade Lundqvist … and I’m convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that such ‘counter-attack’ has them headed for the playoffs ! :)

      • sportsfan69 - Jan 11, 2014 at 5:24 PM

        Conrad Blomfeld,

I’ll fight with you anytime in battle.
