Flyers top Devils in OT, finish six-game tour on high note

Jan 7, 2014, 10:43 PM EDT

Tuesday, Jan. 7 should rank as a memorable day for Brayden Schenn. In one 24-hour period, he went from being shocked by Claude Giroux’s Olympic snub to cut in the hip/stomach area by an errant skate blade to a triumphant overtime-winner.

Let’s get the cut out of the way once more:

Schenn didn’t really even miss a beat after that. His Philadelphia Flyers can be excused for being a little flustered when they entered overtime, however, as the New Jersey Devils scored a beauty to tie the game up in the waning moments:

That just opened the door for Schenn, 22, to put a cherry on top of his very odd day, as he scored the 3-2 OT winner:

With this win, Philly won five games in a six-game road trip. The Flyers also showed their resilience once more, as they generated their sixth third-period comeback since Dec. 4. (Conversely, the Devils are still pretty tough with a lead entering the final frame, as they’re now 10-0-2 in that context after this loss.)

The Flyers improve to 22-17-4 this season while the Devils’ third consecutive loss bumps them down to 17-18-9 in 2013-14.

Man from worst record in hockey to fifth in the eastern conference in a couple months….not only are they finding ways to win but Chief Berube gotta start getting some coach of the year buzz

    • hockey412 - Jan 8, 2014 at 8:21 AM

Agree completely, depending on if they keep in going. They are TIED for 5th as far as points go, and within 3 points of not being in a playoff spot at all.

Not trying to be contradictory – I’m not a fan but whew 8 of 10? That’s great – just stating the obvious that they better treat their slow start as their one ‘get out of jail free’ card and not slump or get to comfortable. It’s impressive!

You’re Damn right he should be mentioned as coach of the year. And Giroux needs to be recognized for being a captain. He has been on a tear and he has been leading the team and winning. He nay get a fire in him after his Olympic snub as well

    • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 8, 2014 at 6:59 AM

The snub may have been the best thing to happen to Giroux in a longtime… I have a feeling we will continue to see the captain’s game get better and getter bc when he is motivated there are few players better in the NHL.

In October, with a hand injury that was more serious than was probably let on + terrible team play, he managed just six points in 11 games (all assists). In Nov: 4 goals and 8 assists (12 pts). In 15 Dec games, 7 goals 12 assists (19 points) and now two more goals in 3 Jan games (plus a huge one last night). It’s no coincidence that as G has gotten better (minus October= 33 pts 32 games), so have the Flyers. (When healthy) they have one of the most compete 1st lines in hockey with G’s all-around play, Voracek’s dynamic play, and Raffl’s speedy two-way game.

Overall, they’re starting to get good goaltending from Emery, and Mason has bounced back from his mini-slump; Hartnell is finally back to productive Hartsy; plus with the suddenly fulfilled potentials of guys like Simmonds, BSchenn, Read, Coots, Downie, Streit, and Kimmo, look out… Rinaldo and Hall are doing their jobs, and once Lecavalier gets his game back and Gustafsson (replaces the mostly god-awful Mez) returns this team will be one of the best in the East (I know the West is better). But few Eastern teams are handling the west better than the Flyers and few in Metro or Atlantic are as hot. WIth a great Eagles season coming to an abrupt end, the City’s hopes rest on a rejuvenated orange and black squad.

That Zids pass though. That’s why we traded for him, seen him pull off these amazing passes a couple of times. His defensive play has tons of room for improvement but his production on offense has been so underrated.

Pete DeBoer needs to be fired ASAP. He sucks. If Lou is ok with him, then he needs to go as well.

  5. phillyphannnn83 - Jan 8, 2014 at 3:51 AM

Flyers are hot and Pens fans have yet to accept the fact that their worst nightmare is directly in their rearview mirror and closing!

    • hockey412 - Jan 8, 2014 at 8:27 AM

I don’t think there are many Pens fans reading this, but as a Pens fan I will say that the steak is impressive. I don’t think the Flyers are our worst nightmare, but they are a team that seems to enjoy matching up with the Pens. It’s easy to get under the Pens skin, and they seem to enjoy doing it. Three points from losing out on the playoffs, though – so they need to keep winning :)

      • cofran2004 - Jan 8, 2014 at 9:16 AM

I like that philly steak too. And the cheese! One of my favorite parts of visiting philidelphia.

Their hockey team seems to be streaking too. Not too sure why you mentioned steak…

I’m sorry… I’m not usually one to point out typos, but this one was unique. And now I want a philly cheese steak. I blame you!

      • hockey412 - Jan 8, 2014 at 10:42 AM

Haha nice…as much as I’ve been a smartas* on here, I suppose I deserve that…I’ll just have to grin and beer it this time…

      • cofran2004 - Jan 8, 2014 at 10:44 AM

        Must… resist….. urge to go…. drink beer……. at work….

        Stupid subliminal messages.

      • ibieiniid - Jan 8, 2014 at 9:39 AM

        “And the cheese!” lol’d me.

  6. toiletclown - Jan 8, 2014 at 6:33 AM

hahahaha what a joke this flyer team is. when youre almost up by double points in the conference, you actually kind of pitty these second rate teams. keep your heads up flygirl fans, next year is a fresh start

    • philafly - Jan 8, 2014 at 8:03 AM

      You’re an idiot.

    • ibieiniid - Jan 8, 2014 at 8:30 AM

it’s a simple idea. to bash a team:

after a loss: say team sucks
      after a win: stfu, idiot.

somehow, there’s a plethora of people on PHT that haven’t grasped that strategy yet.

      • philafly - Jan 8, 2014 at 8:36 AM

        Can I like this twice?

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 8, 2014 at 6:49 PM

Look guys Soup Can Army is back…again.

  7. toiletclown - Jan 8, 2014 at 8:47 AM

who saw giroux crying in his interview yesterday? man up son, youll never be an olympic hero like crosby acting like a 14 year old menstruating broad.

    • ibieiniid - Jan 8, 2014 at 9:01 AM

ya, the first hack at the Flyers didn’t work. might as well try again, right? just don’t forget to thumbs up your own post again, or you may end up with all downs again.

    • laxman1944 - Jan 8, 2014 at 9:06 AM

Boy “toiletclown” you seem to be quite the douchebag…….

Still hurting from watching your beloved flightless birds get their asses HANDED to them in the playoffs yet AGAIN.

April is coming……..time to start worrying who will be the team that gets to kick their asses yet again??

      • hockey412 - Jan 8, 2014 at 2:11 PM

I agree with the d-bag comment – but I don’t think it’s a Pens fan (there are plenty of obnoxious ones on here though). He bashes other teams and talks up the Pens and Crosby to get commenters flying off the handle about Crosby. It’s sad…it’s also why he is calling himself “toiletclown”…but, it takes all kinds, I guess.

    • kellyb9 - Jan 8, 2014 at 9:07 AM

So, if I understand you correctly – What you are saying is that Giroux will never be like Crosby because Giroux cries too much.

I think I may finally understand irony.

  8. kastout11 - Jan 8, 2014 at 10:35 AM

Big win last night. Giroux was all over the ice, and they didn’t quit. In October, they would have lost this game, but they are a totally different team now. One thing that bothers me though is Couturier is not scoring like he was about a month ago. I would like to see more offense from him, but he is still a great defensive forward. I do not consider NJ a tough team, but damn they can play some defense and when they establish the forecheck, they can be tough. I think Philly was thoroughly outplayed during the first two periods last night, but finally put things together in the 3rd. Their next three games should be tough though with the second of a back to back tonight against Montreal, then another back to back this weekend against TB on Saturday, then the stinking Rangers on Sunday.

  9. kastout11 - Jan 8, 2014 at 11:18 AM

Schenn had a nice night, but Emery was fantastic last night. They could have easily been down a few goals going into the 3rd period, and he made some nice saves in the 3rd also.

  10. toiletclown - Jan 8, 2014 at 12:12 PM

im suprised giroux could see on the ice last night considering his sight was partially blocked by frozen tears

    • philafly - Jan 8, 2014 at 12:25 PM

You misspelled “cleaner” in your name. It is spelled c-l-e-a-n-e-r, not c-l-o-w-n. Get back to your job, bud.

      • toiletclown - Jan 8, 2014 at 12:32 PM

Is this patton oswalt crackin jokes here? Your a riot bro

      • philafly - Jan 8, 2014 at 12:39 PM

Says the guy who has tried to make 3 jokes on this thread alone.

        By the way, it’s “You’re.” See, I knew you couldn’t spell…bro.

      • philafly - Jan 8, 2014 at 12:41 PM

By the way, if your (proper spelling) comedian of choice is Patton Oswalt, it’s no wonder your jokes suck.

      • ibieiniid - Jan 8, 2014 at 1:19 PM

was with you phila til you hated on Patton Oswalt.

      • philafly - Jan 8, 2014 at 1:49 PM

        Fair enough ibieiniid.

  11. toiletclown - Jan 8, 2014 at 2:54 PM

    • laxman1944 - Jan 8, 2014 at 3:57 PM
