McGrattan defends hit that injured Alberts

Dec 30, 2013, 3:41 PM EDT

Flames tough guy Brian McGrattan doesn’t think he deserved a five-minute major and game misconduct for elbowing Vancouver defenseman Andrew Alberts last night in Calgary (video).

“It’s a shoulder-to-shoulder hit,” McGrattan said, per Kristen Odland of the Calgary Herald. “Unfortunately, he went down. My elbow wasn’t up, my shoulder wasn’t up, I didn’t target the head. So, that’s my take on it.”

Alberts was forced to leave the game and reportedly has a concussion. As a result, the Canucks called up defenseman Frankie Corrado from AHL Utica today.

The Flames haven’t heard anything from the NHL regarding a possible hearing for supplementary discipline.

    Huge embellishment

    • joey4id - Dec 30, 2013 at 5:03 PM

haha. Just like Hertl and Boyle. Eh!

Or not….one thing is VERY clear from that video – McGratten had no intention whatsoever of playing the puck. Actually skated right past the puck to make an ill-advised hit. Not saying whether or not the hit was bad – but damn, I’m all for removing all these players, the Thorntons, the McGrattens, the Rinaldo’s.

One of my friend’s is a sports commentator for the Caps. He even has said,”Rinaldo is a energy guy. Most of his checks are clean. He’ll make you cough up the puck and cause a turnover before you know it.” Some of his past antics may have been questioned by the league. Should the NHL have these kind of players? It’s been around for over a hundred yrs. Friend says a lot of players today sound like a wuss. You call yourselves men. So act like one

Before you shoot your mouth off. If the league did not have players who would step up and police some of the action. You have playmakers and goal scorer’s dropping the gloves. I doubt Crosby, Malkin, Zetterberg, Perry, Callahan, Ovie or the Sedin twins would fight a guy like Chara or Lucic. They get their asses handed to them or worse. Will you hockey412 step up on the ice and police them up? Do you know of anyone else who could? Get the drift. Having some enforcers out there are needed. If you do not like it. Don’t watch.

Calm your nasty bit*h as* down. I’m not seriously talking about removing no-talent hitters like Rinaldo from hockey. Gad knows Philly fans would have nothing left to cheer for (and gad knows they don’t care about winning games)…just making the point, stirring the pot. There are plenty of them out there, players put on the ice to ignore the puck and try to hit as many players as possible – I for one am not amused by it, but hey, my team’s got them too. Some of them are just more dangerous than others because they don’t give a rats as* whether they go high or hit a guy in a bad position, like Rinaldo.

Also – maybe your dumbas* announcer friend should take a look at Philly STILL not in a playoff spot and consider Rinaldo’s ONE POINT in 41 games this year, or his MINUS 13 (WTF?!?!?!). hahahah yeah he sounds SUPER knowledgeable…as do you.

Also – and most importantly – this was NOT POLICING ANYTHING. I’m so tired of that lame excuse for an argument.

Huge embellishment? He received a concussion. Obviously they didn’t get rid of the “know nothing” clowns who frequent this blog.

It’s just that the Canucks are elevated embellishing to an art form. Sometimes you hurt yourself when you throw yourself out there.

      • imawolfman - Dec 30, 2013 at 7:15 PM

Have you watched any Canucks games in the last couple years? Outside of a Luongo dive against Nashville earlier this year I can’t recall any obvious embellishments. They’ve made a concerted effort in the last couple years not to dive. Before that? Yeah, they dove quite a bit.

Problem is, some of the “know nothing” clowns who frequent this blog are the authors.

        I like Brough though.

have to agree with sjsharks66 and mcgrattan

wounded or not, alberts did a big sell on the flop…it’s in the eyes cut toward the referee and it’s in the heels elevating…

    bad ballet…pure bolshoi

the drop defies physics for anyone not practicing for the mens’ dance program at sochi…but then…who knows how alberts gets his jollies…?

    • imawolfman - Dec 30, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Well then you are an idiot. Alberts is barely hanging on to a spot in the NHL. For him to fake an injury and put his team short a dman for almost the entire game would be counterproductive.
