Holmgren boils over when asked about coach’s future

Apr 27, 2013, 7:19 PM EDT

Paul Holmgren AP

Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren is apparently really fed up with people asking him if head coach Peter Laviolette is going to be fired this summer.

There’s been speculation about Laviolette’s future for months now and when a source stating that the bench boss would be dismissed was cited to Holmgren, the Flyers general manager passionately fired back.

“I’m not even going to comment on the [expletive] sources,” he said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. “…Some idiot made it up.”

Still, Holmgren was pressed further and asked if could say for certain that Laviolette would return for the 2013-14 campaign.

“I’m not saying a [expletive] thing….How many times do I have to tell you I haven’t even thought about firing the coach?” Holmgren asked. “How many times?”

This isn’t the first time that Holmgren has stood up for Laviolette. Although Philadelphia fell well short of a postseason berth, he recently stated that the “coaches have done a good job under the circumstances.”

Flyers GM Holmgren not thinking of firing Laviolette

Flyers failed season leaves Fedotenko shocked

  1. crazemastercraze - Apr 27, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Lavi is a done deal, pal, DONE DEAL!

  2. flyersfan67 - Apr 27, 2013 at 7:54 PM

Lavy’s a great coach, but either can’t or refuses to adapt the the changing times. A system that worked 10 years ago, isn’t the same today. You can play an upbeat aggressive offense while still being defensive minded. Time for a change Paul

    • stakex - Apr 27, 2013 at 8:23 PM

While there is truth in that, Laviolette isn’t the one who builds the team. He has to do what he can with what he is given…. and its not his fault he doesn’t have much of a defense and a cive for a goaltender.

The one who should be fired is Holmgren. He brought in Bryz, made some very questionable trades that didn’t pan out, failed to keep Jagr who was the glue for their first line last year, and never did anything to patch the giant hole left in the defense with Pronger getting hurt. To make it worse, not only has he made a lot of bad moves… he hasn’t made any good moves to balance it out.

Now I’m not a Flyers fan so I don’t really care what they do, but the smart move would be to keep Laviolette and can Holmgren.

Lets not be shortsighted. Homer did sign weber to an offer sheet that even the yankees would have to look twice. This was after missing on Suter too. Furthermore as the season progressed they lost virtually every starting defensemen to injury. The flyers relentlessly look to add pieces..and they will continue to do so this year. Big deal they are missing the playoffs for tue second time in 18 years? Focus on the positives. The core is intact. For all the supposed non-depth at the Ahl level. Our young D players have silenced critics. While other players like akeson, mcginn, and laughton wait in the wings. Finally: Bryz is fine!!! Find another goalie that had started 22 straight this season.Recognize that most elite goalies are supplementied by a decent back up. Tandems win games and mason is here to be a back up. If you think the flyers would trade bob…in favor of bryz ..only to a year later replace him with the guy bob replaced; your an idiot. Relax flyers fans. Everything will be okay. I even believe had this been a full season we would havr made it. So please… shut up and be patient.

If you cant beat the devils you gotta go

  4. jimw81 - Apr 27, 2013 at 8:29 PM

if you can’t beat the devils and compile an garbage roster you gotta go. Homer and lavy are done in Philly and stupid beat writers drove them out,.

    • jimw81 - Apr 27, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Homer and lavy know snider is on line #2 after tonight’s game…..

  5. sjsharks66 - Apr 27, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Hey homer, i heard from a source that you are going to fire Lavi.

  6. icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 27, 2013 at 8:37 PM

Homer has to fire Lavi and bring in a coach that requires the whole team to be responsible in all three zones.

  7. mclovinhockey - Apr 27, 2013 at 8:43 PM

@stakex, he has made some pretty good moves, the Richards and carter trades gave Philly a lot of skill and depth. Most morons say it was a bad move and that’s why they won a cup playing on the 2nd line of the kings, but Philly got simmonds, Voracek, Coutier, B. Schenn and a 2nd round pick they used to bring in Grossman.
Those 5 for those 2 and having a similar cap hit was amazing.

Yup he gave a long contract to a then veznia finalist, and the goalie has been great at times and shaky at others, but the contract was designed so Bryz can head back to Russia to play and still get paid.

Not saying homer is a great GM, but he has done some good moves.

    • jimw81 - Apr 27, 2013 at 8:47 PM

Holmgren has to go as well. He shuffled the deck of this club and it has failed miserably. It’s time for ed snider take control and hiring people who aren’t friends or in his inner circle. Loyalty, Loyalty has been killing the flyers and it has to end starting tonight.

  8. hockeywithdrawal - Apr 27, 2013 at 9:18 PM

I can’t believe I’d ever stick up for Laviolette…and actually I won’t…all I’d say is it was Holmgren that traded away their experience for very talented youngsters…that may take a while to be consistent. Can’t figure what Holmgren ever did that was worthy of being a GM anyway.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 27, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Except JUST Voracek (46) and Simmonds (32) have more combined points than Richards (32) and Carter (33). Then throw in Schenn, Couturier, and Grossman (acquired for the 2nd from the trade) and it’s a no brainer. Richards and Carter were hardly the reason the Kings won the Cup. And the Flyers got four young foundation pieces. Plus a solid defender. That’s a hell of a trade. And everyones ignoring the fact that Holmgren traded Leighton and 3rd for Steve Mason, who just had another 40+ save night. The dude’s been unbeatable.

      • President Charles Logan - Apr 27, 2013 at 10:17 PM

they were hardly the reason the kings won the cup last year??? … wow you really come up with some goofy shyt and alls you ever do is drink the orange kool aid.. im going to laugh my a$$ off when voracek and simmonds come crashing down to reality next season when they wont even come close to duplicating the number of goals and points they somehow mustered up this year

      • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 27, 2013 at 10:42 PM

You say I drink the kool aid, but you’re a Flyers hater so what makes you so credible? If anything you fall into the anti-Flyer cult as much, or more, than I fit in with the kool aid drinkers. And yes, Carter and Richards were NOT the reason the Kings won… ever heard of Jonathan Quick, Drew Doughty, or Anze Kopitar? There’s a reason Quick won the Conn Smythe and not Carter or Richards.

As for Voracek and Simmonds… if you really think that then you’re just proving how little hockey knowledge you really have. Both players have progressively gotten better each year in the league and Voracek will annually be close to a PPG player. But yeah Simmonds year was a fluke… he only managed to “muster” 28 goals last season. And neither is even 25 yet. But they must be no talent bums because president charles logan says so.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 27, 2013 at 10:49 PM

Carter and Richards? LOL Homer won that trade by a freaking landslide. Simmer and Jake are beasts showing big improvements this year. Now if only Homer can land an elite dman to boost the solid young prospects coming up.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Apr 28, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Maybe you’re right – there IS a lot of talent on wing that has performed well. Lots of long term contracts that have hurt in some cases and in some cases (Pronger) not so much, but anyone would give most of those contracts. Maybe not Bryz. Who knows…certainly not me. I just have a hard time seeing it put on Laviolette as opposed to Holmgren…but, injuries being what they are, maybe they’ll ride it out anyway. Not too many D-men out there as UFA’s this year, will be interested to see if they try a trade.

  9. canucks30 - Apr 27, 2013 at 9:40 PM

Apparently everything is just fine in the City of Brotherly Love.

Don’t worry be happy I guess.

  10. President Charles Logan - Apr 27, 2013 at 10:19 PM

lol @ getting excited about steve mason… he’s only playing this way cause every tram you play is going through the motions now … wait till next year when he’s actually going to be expected to perform once you guys hopefully buy out that russian clown …

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 27, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Although I agree in hoping that Bryz is gone but otherwise you’re the clown. Yeah, Steve Mason was only playing teams going through the motions. Right. That’s why he started against the Rangers, Islanders, Bruins, Sabres, and Senators… all teams either fighting for their playoff lives or going all out for a better position. And he was lights out in every game he played in Flyers uniform. I know you have this schtick where you love to instigate Flyers fans but maybe you should know what you’re talking about before posting your usual Philly hate.

      • drone501 - Apr 27, 2013 at 10:57 PM

if i had to depend on steve mason as the franchise saving goalie, i would be in some deep dung. your goalie is in columbus

      • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 27, 2013 at 11:10 PM

No one is calling him a franchise savior, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be excited about his game. And who said this team needs saving? Pittsburgh fans haven’t seen him play, they just see stats or maybe highlights, but that doesn’t do him justice. I’ve seen A LOT of goalies as a Flyers fan and few have impressed me like Mason. 43 saves tonight was no fluke. This is a guy who won the Calder then got lit up behind a terrible team. He lost his confidence, and subsequently lost his job. But opposing fans just look at his past stats and just think this kid’s a joke or the Flyers are just grasping at straws again… that isn’t the case! I was as skeptical as anyone when they got him, but I’m telling you he’s a legitimate starter in this league. And he clearly has a high ceiling.

what happens to flyers is in ed snider’s hand and it’s a big problem. He can’t go into offseason and into next season witih a unhappy fanbase and two lightning rods in holmgren and lavy still with the team. To top it off, Flyers are project to lose 10-15 million this year in profit.

  13. President Charles Logan - Apr 28, 2013 at 12:09 AM

lol im not a flyer hater, how can i hate an insignificant franchise ???
guess ya’ll wont have a reason to post on this site anymore after tomorrow huh .. and 77 you’re so biased towards your own guys…. the hate you have for carter and richards is amusing, they played a big role in that SC last year with all the intangibles they bring, speed, PK forechecking (richards anyways) …. and to say you guys won the trade by a landslide?? lol .. thats even worth another LOL .. what do you got to show in the past 2 years with this landslide trade??? 2 round exit and a no playoff exit …

only in philly, the fans live in their own delusional bubble , the one with the 1975 disco ball over the ice …

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 28, 2013 at 1:45 AM

You seem pretty obsessed with something as insignificant as our franchise. Talk to your shrink about it. Maybe he’s too busy trying to get you to come out of the closet Lindsey.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 28, 2013 at 1:55 AM

No the hate you have for the Flyers is amusing, especially bc there’s no justification. And I’m realistic… look at the production! Like I’ve said before, I’m a huge Mike Richards fan but Jeff Carter is one of the most overrated, one dimensional players in the entire league. Even you yourself could only list the “intangibles” that Richards brings, not Carter. How does this not make sense to you? Voracek-age 23, 46 pts; Simmonds-age 24, 32 pts; Schenn-age 21, 26 pts; Couturier-age 20, 15 pts. Now: Richards- age 28, 32 pts; Carter- age 28, 33 pts. So that’s four younger players with more potential (119 total pts) versus two players in their prime (65 total pts)… ANY GM would take the 4 developing players, who I might add are already more productive than the players in their prime. Plus Schenn and Couturier are just scratching the surface of their potential.

And this has nothing to do with me being biased towards my own players, it has everything to do with you being biased towards anyone in a Flyers uniform. You’ve never been able to admit the Flyers have any good players, their entire core is crap according to you. And that fact gives you zero credibility in the discussion. Not to mention that you’ve watched all of what? 5 Flyers games this season? But somehow you always know enough to criticize them. I’d say that makes you nothing more than an uninformed hater who finds joy in trolling articles that he actually knows nothing about.

      • President Charles Logan - Apr 28, 2013 at 11:09 AM

the flyers have some good players , i never once said that simmonds and voracek arent good players .. but you and the majority of your fanbase make them out to be these great superstars in the making . I get a kick out of the word troll.. why am i a troll?? is this article property of you and braodstreetbeatdown? (who for some reason continues to make alot of gay references which must only mean one thing ) …. again , it’s one thing to hate , and it’s another to mock, if you’re as perceptive as you claim then go over a few of my posts.. the tones are usually filled with laughter, not venom .

      • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 28, 2013 at 12:17 PM

No you’re making out Richards and Carter as superstars when they’re nothing more than good players. And it’s not just Flyers fans who think Voracek is special… to average a PPG at the age of 23 is impressive and he’s improved every season so he projects as a top notch player. No one claims Simmonds is a superstar, but he’s a fan fave bc he works so hard. He’s a player that does everything, and he has 30 goal potential. And finally I didn’t call you a troll but said you’ve been trolling bc you always have to play devils advocate, even when you’re unfamiliar with the topic.

  14. President Charles Logan - Apr 28, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Oh and get rid of those WEAK looking light orange home jerseys with the stupid looking white nameplate .. go back to the black jerseys , maybe then you’ll feel meaner and more effective lol

    • ml3939 - Apr 28, 2013 at 1:19 AM

I am still here buddy. I watched every last game. I liked them winning there last 6 of 7, 5 against play off teams, with a patchwork defense to boot. I have defended Holmgren numerous times here. I guess I will enjoy the spring a little earlier this year. Or as they call it in Pittsburgh, tradition.

I can’t blame him for blowing up a little.

Reporter: “You’re thinking of firing Lavi aren’t you?”
Holmgren: “That’s not something that’s even on our radar.”
Reporter: “Quick follow up question: you’re thinking of firing Lavi aren’t you?”
Holmgren: “Sigh. I already answered that question.”

Repeat every day for months, until one day…

Reporter: “You’re thinking of firing Lavi aren’t you?”
    Holmgren: *Hadoken!*
Reporter: “Quick follow up question: You’re thinking of firing Lavi aren’t you?”

Don’t worry about coach! Worry about buying out your crappy goalie!

    • President Charles Logan - Apr 28, 2013 at 11:12 AM

hey now, dont talk about the 2 flyer goalies like that! they think steve mason is unbeatable and bryz “isnt a problem after all ” lol

      • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 28, 2013 at 12:08 PM

Have you watched Mason play once in a Flyers uniform? I’d say no, because if you had you’d be aware that he has been unbeatable. Behind an AHL blueline against teams fighting for their playoff lives. Even in a limited sample size a .940 save% and a sub-2.00 GAA is impressive. And the team plays much more confidently in front of him, part of the reason they won 6 of their last 7. So keep hating on Flyers that you’ve barely even seen.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 28, 2013 at 12:27 PM

Rangers coach John Tortorella: “We just couldn’t solve Mason” and Sens Erik Karlsson: “We created a lot of scoring chances but we just couldn’t beat Mason. He played unbelievable for them.”

Pretty high praise. And every team he’s played has said similar things. So yes, he’s been unbeatable.

      • President Charles Logan - Apr 28, 2013 at 12:52 PM

lol.. still grasping i see.. mason’s played in non pressure situations when his team had been clearly out of the playoff race for a month , yeah alot of average to below average goalies would play good in those situations when they are fighting to get noticed. and on top of that especially when they are auditioning for a starters role and a new contract. .. lets see what he does next year if and when he’s asked to be the go to guy and the #1 starter . I suppose it doesnt take much to out do his partner in bryzgaov
