Sabres president sticks up for GM Regier, but admits things could change

Sabres president Ted Black was on the hot seat today in a video interview with Buffalo News columnist Bucky Gleason.

The main topic of conversation? That would be general manager Darcy Regier. Specifically, if Regier should still have a job after the Sabres missed the playoffs last year and are off to a 5-8-1 start this year.

Gleason — who’s been particularly critical of Sabres owner Terry Pegula’s loyalty to the current management regime — asked Black about the contract extension Regier received in January, i.e. what had he done to deserve it?

Black admitted that Regier’s efforts aren’t translating on the ice at the moment — “we’re in last place” — but he defended the club’s decision to extend the general manager’s deal.

“The extension that Darcy got is more of an affirmation that we trust the job he’s doing right now,” said Black. “It’s not in perpetuity. It’s not a perpetual contract.

“It’s more of a ‘we want you to continue to work hard at your job without something being a distraction to you, for one, and two to show we have our full faith in you to do your job and go out and do it the best you possibly can.'”

Buffalo hosts Boston tonight and has another tough home game Sunday against Pittsburgh on national TV.

Bucky is an idiot….however listening to Ted Black makes Buffalo Fans want to rip their ears off. He tries to sugar coat losing seasons with Statues and Hotels making it seem as if we will be distracted by the on ice product.

Terry is failing as an owner very quickly with his decisions so far. No one is questioning his loyalty to the City of Buffalo but we are questioning his and his advisers Hockey IQ.

He will find it? Find what? Your team is last in its division, and not looking like they are going to get better! I personally love it! The sabres have sucked for years, and will continue to do so for many more. Absolutely love it.

Cool story bro, the Flyers are two points up on the Sabres and have already lost to them this season. But thanks for the good fortune in the future.

    • 19to77 - Feb 15, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Your Flyers will be golfing with them by the end of the regular season, bud.

Well, unless Miller goes on another wild hot streak at season’s end. Sabres could make it. Flyers aren’t, though. They’ve got nothing right now. Friggin’ Bryzgalov is the best player on the team and even he’s only middle of the road amongst goalies.

    @ Jack Bauer 24
You repeat the same lame insults over and over. Sad that your life is so boring you have to go to every Buffalo thread and throw childish insults. Put the bong down and get out of your moms basement

BTW what city are you from jack?

***arrrrgh~!~ im a buffalo sports fan and im ANGRY!!!!!!! AAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!! FIRE LINDY!!!!! FIRE REGIER!!!!!!! TRADE EVERYONE!!!!!!!***

please, people. as a buffalo sabres fan/season ticket holder myself i politely ask that you all stop sounding like broken records and find a new forum to express your discomfort with the team and its front office. maybe a scream into a pillow, or write a strongly worded letter to the front office (those always work!), or maybe walk into the woods and scream at the top of your lungs!

change isnt coming, at least not anytime soon. so its best to sit back and roll with the punches until then.

oh yeah. bucky gleason is a fat idiot.

His English is tricky if you don’t speak “positive Buffalo p.r. spin”. What he’s really saying is “Our G.M. is good enough”, “Our coach is good enough.”, and “Our team is good enough.”Do you guys want to see an artists rendering of a hotel that’ll be a parking lot a year after it opens?”

    Firing Darcy is just patchwork

    Sabres are a joke

    Sincerely,

    An honest Sabres fan

Well, if they could just play the Bruins every game, they’d have a far better record.

    It’s almost Bondish.

Bruins: Do you expect us to not play hard?

Sabres: Why no, Mr. Boston, I expect you to lose!

Trading for Ryan O’Reilly will buy him some time…

    • 19to77 - Feb 15, 2013 at 8:56 PM

Hmmm. He’d be good for them – size, physicality, great two-way presence, good faceoff man. He’d do a lot of what the Sabres need someone to be doing right now. Downside is that you’d have to overpay heavily to get him. The Avs seem to want to trade him for a package befitting of a Selke winner – plus, the Sabres are in a pretty hard spot right now.

Still. Would do a lot to solidify the lines, a la Jeff Carter for LA last year. Could be a great fit.

Not worried, Sabres will win the cup. Season isn’t won in the first quarter

    • 8man - Feb 15, 2013 at 8:38 PM

You are a true fan. I salute your optimism. I don’t like your chances, but I like your passion.

Piece of cake over Boston. Onward and upward. See yah Philly.

    • thedavesiknowiknow - Feb 15, 2013 at 10:02 PM

? I lost count of the turnovers. Had Miller been anything but outstanding the 3rd wouldn’t have made a difference.

  13. 19to77 - Feb 15, 2013 at 10:48 PM

Sabres need waaaaay more shot-blocking. Miller had to post 41 saves for a one-goal win over the freaking Islanders, and the Boston game was, as usual, won on his back. If the Sabres want back in the postseason, they need way more support around the net.

  14. buffalomafia - Feb 16, 2013 at 9:07 AM

Terry Pegula is a fan not an owner! He is stuck in the 70’s!

No team would keep Ruff or Regeire this long! We need a real coach & GM!

Kaleta doesn’t belong in NHL with 3 other dead weight players on the team!

We need players that can score!!!!

If it wasn’t for Miller we would get killed! I can see Miller in a Flyers, Blackhawks or Red Wings jersey!

Sabres fans get sucked in every year! Mediocrity every year!

Sabre fans….would you prefer to have the Rigas’, and quinn and dipofi in charge?
