Sabres extend GM Darcy Regier’s contract

Darcy Regier has been general manager of the Buffalo Sabres since 1997 and now he’s going to be sticking around a bit longer.

Sabres owner Terry Pegula announced they’ve signed Regier to a contract extension to continue pulling the strings for the franchise. As Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports, the GM is happy to keep on keepin’ on.

“I am very grateful and honored to be able to continue in this capacity working with this ownership,” Regier said inside the Lexus Club at the First Niagara Center. ” … I think the beautiful thing about this organization is we continue to grow, continue to improve.”

If the Sabres improve this season, that would put them back in the postseason. With rookie Mikhail Grigorenko starting the year with the team, and looking like he’ll play tomorrow against Philadelphia, they’re hopeful that injection of offensive talent can help them get there.

Still, it’s crazy to think Regier’s been in charge for this long when other teams chew up and spit out GMs like it’s nothing. He’s nothing if not consistent with what the organization wants.

He sticks to the game plan. Some of the decisions are questionable, but there’s no doubt in my mind he has what it takes to get the job done. Especially with what he did in bringing in hodgson, drafting grigorenko, filigno, Myers and Ennis. Lewis see what the future holds, especially now that he has an owner that isn’t tightening the noose on the budget available to the players.

Last draft saved Darcy, because I was getting the vibe people were preparing pitchforks and torches not too long ago.

Eh. No surprise- but that 12 game losing streak last year was a defining moment for him. Too gun-shy to build a winning team. As per the status-quo, I’d expect Ruff to be extended within a few weeks as well.

He’s been the Sabres GM since 1997 and you seriously are using one 12-game losing streak in 2012 as a “defining moment” for him. lol

no….that span was interchangeable with dozens of the same variety. I agree: reading is hard enough…reading between the lines….gaaaaad!
