Fehr admits there’s “not a lot to say” after CBA talks wrap on Monday

Dec 31, 2012, 5:48 PM EST

Fehr and Bettman AP

The NHLPA presented the NHL with its counter-proposal Monday, but Donald Fehr told the Sporting News’ Jesse Spector that there’s “not much to say” just yet.

Gary Bettman explained the next steps to CSNChicago.com’s Tracey Myers.

“We made a comprehensive proposal that was (288) pages. They’ve come back with a comprehensive response. We need time to analyze it,” Bettman said. “We’re going to do (review) tonight. The expectation is we’ll contact them tomorrow morning and get together hopefully by midday.”

Bettman also told RDS that the deadline to make a deal is Jan. 11.

As far as getting there is considered, both sides are being skimpy with details, but there are a few bits that have trickled down to media members.

For one thing, the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch reports that nothing has been decided regarding the NHLPA’s disclaimer of interest. At the moment, it remains an option but not a foregone conclusion.

Meanwhile, Sportsnet’s Daren Millard quotes an unnamed league source who said “we still have a ways to go.”

That’s a bit vague, especially with a collapsed timeline in mind.

If “a ways to go” can be settled within this week, one report indicates that it’s possible that a 52-game season could start on Jan. 12.

Still, many observers expect another week (to 11 days) of wheel-spinning, with a more realistic goal of kicking things off on Jan. 19.

Unless there is no season to kick off, of course.

    GAH!!!!

  2. datsyukx13 - Dec 31, 2012 at 5:56 PM

How can you start on the 12th if games are cancelled until the 14th

    • id4joey - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:03 PM

How about scheduling games on Jan 12?

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:05 PM

Because they’d be using a brand new schedule. In theory games are cancelled until the 14th on the original 82 game schedule but in order to ensure that there’s enough games against division opponents etc and that each team will have an equal number of home and away games they will draw up and release a brand new schedule, I would doubt we’ll see any intra conference games this year and if we do it’ll be probably against “historical” foes…so the Western Canadian teams can get their home games against Montreal and Toronto.

Well- the act of counter offering didn’t offend the high brow side of the table to the point of temper tantrum. So that’s good news.

    • id4joey - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:07 PM

All part of the script written by Proskauer Rose and the NHL. Happy New Year. See you all next year. Hopefully tomorrow both sides will be drunk when they meet and they will sign the deal. id4joey out!

  4. fishtales10 - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:02 PM

Means nothing that games are cancelled til the 14th. If, and that’s a big if, there is a season there would be an entirely new schedule.

  5. fortwaynekomets - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:09 PM

if you guys can’t see there will BE NO SEASON then you must be blind.

the NHL embarrassed the NHLPA with its initial offer back in Fall, and now the PA is prepared to make it as hard as possible on the league.

all that matters is the 50/50 blame you should be putting on both parties. nothing else really really matters at this point.

nah nah nah nahhh hey hey ey GOOD-BYE!

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Go back to watching your third tier league. I’ll be sure to go to a few Hitmen games this winter to check out the 4th line players who will become stars for your team.

  6. fortwaynekomets - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:13 PM

    NHLPA should be looking to sign as many players as possible to the AHL and ECHL before the rosters are full for the playoffs =}

  7. luz56 - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:26 PM

How about “who cares”? I just saved 9500.00 this year by not playing. I’m done with these whiners.

    • mgdsquiggy17 - Jan 1, 2013 at 2:07 AM

clearly you care enough to go online, visit and read an article on a hockey related website and tell everyone how much you don’t care.

  8. starsfan11 - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:30 PM

Joey why would they need to sign if Bergeron said it was done

  9. xaf605 - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Agree luz didnt save 9500 but did save 2500 im done

  10. id4joey - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:51 PM

starsfan11, why are being such an a hole about this? I encourage you to go to the RDS web site and listen to his headline. Take a break. Even the biggest rivals in hockey can put their differences aside for a few hours. Now would be a good time. Peace out and Happy New Year.

    • ravenscaps48 - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Why can’t you answer his question?

      • husky2score - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:58 PM

No no! Don’t ask this “sheep” any more questions!!!!!!! We know what he thinks and he is wrong!!!

      • id4joey - Dec 31, 2012 at 7:02 PM

        How the f are you?

      • id4joey - Dec 31, 2012 at 7:05 PM

Only sheep remain skeptical because they cannot think on their own. Follow the flock.

      • blomfeld - Jan 1, 2013 at 1:50 AM

*** somewhere out there yonder on the great plains ***

Blomfeld: who is this lone rider that travels bravely and alone through the valley below?

Ten Bears: perhaps he’s one of the soldiers from the fort?

Crazy Dog: well I think we should totally kill him! … he’s like totally alone!

Blomfeld: no brothers, I believe it is “he” … the one whose words offer hope and promise …

Ten Bears: do you really think that it could be “he” who now comes before us?

Crazy Dog: wait a minute … like are you guys talking about that Joey guy?

Blomfeld: yes brothers, it is “he” who rides bravely and alone there in the valley!

Ten Bears: then what is it brother that we’re supposed to do now?

Blomfeld: we will talk with him and listen to his message of hope and promise …

Crazy Dog: and like, does this guy know where I can find chicks and stuff?

Blomfeld: be patient young brother, for “he” is the one who can show us the way …

        ___________________________________________________________

There doesn’t need to be a lot to say except “That’s All Folks!” for the despicable NHL season going down the tubes. Sounds like lots of good progress wasn’t made in the latest round of offers and counteroffers, the best news yet about not ending the strike.

Na na na na, Na na na na, Hey-ey Goodbye!!!

  19. gallyhatch - Jan 1, 2013 at 9:56 AM

Certain people in these comment threads have way too much free time, and think way two highly of their own opinions (assuming they aren’t one person posting as multiple……which they probably are)

  20. gallyhatch - Jan 1, 2013 at 10:14 AM

    way “too” highly (whoops)

  21. sportsfan69 - Jan 1, 2013 at 11:33 AM

    Gents,

What is the latest news in regards to ending this lock out? Are they meeting today, what is the deal breaker now? Has our Fehr found new “scorched earth item?”

Will this lockout continue on and on with no end in site?

  22. cvgconstruction - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Yeah, I do not know if this is really going to happen, this will be the last chance for this season, hope they realize what is at stake here from a fan base standpoint, or maybe should say I hope they even care about the fan base.

    • id4joey - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:12 PM

Both sides need to care more about their bank accounts than the fans. More so the players because they will never make up for loss pay checks whereas the owners can find ways to make up for loss revenue over a period of a few years. Simple economics.
