NHL targeting Jan. 19 start date?

Dec 28, 2012, 10:52 AM EDT

Though there’s been nothing official from the NHL or NHLPA, today’s news that the league has provided the union with a new CBA proposal has garnered a few interesting tidbits:

Here’s Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News:

That tweet was supported by the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch:

Garrioch also had this:

James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail reports on the next step for the PA:

More details are sure to emerge as the day progresses, so keep checking back.

Hopefully this all leads to something. It’s hard to imagine the players accepting this proposal in its entirety, which begs the question: How much further is the NHL willing to move?

The whole concept of the league having a target date in mind for the start of the season is incredibly frustrating, to me. Makes the whole lockout seem kinda planned out..

    • jcmeyer10 - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:10 AM

Lol at Blomfield potentially being right.

    • stakex - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:47 AM

If you look at this one piece of news in an extremely narrow focus…. then yes, I could see that.

However considering this is the last possible shot at a deal, obviously the league has a target date to get this thing done. If they miss it, theres no season. Its not like the owners actually wanted to go all the way to January 19th from the start of the lockout. Its likely their target dates have shifted every time a new block of games were canceled.

    • greatminnesotasportsmind - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:53 AM

They also targeted Dec 15th (guessing on date) earlier. We’ve already been down this road before. Here we still are…

  2. broadstbully33 - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:04 AM

Take the deal and drop the puck!

  3. greatminnesotasportsmind - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:04 AM

I think I can speak for most fans…

Get back to us when your actually serious and are closing to having a deal in place.

I find this one very skeptical since the players don’t even know about this offer let alone to whom this was made to.

  4. hotloinsofsid - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:20 AM

its a done deal, god bless the nhl

  5. buffalomafia - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:25 AM

Go Sabres! Yeeeeah riiiight! Its either Flyers or Pens in the East!

  6. broadstbully33 - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:29 AM

Buffalomafia as I flyers fan ill tell you NYR looks really dangerous in the east

    • ravenscaps48 - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:36 AM

NYR will be a flop. Watch. Rick Nash will be a huge disappointment

      • jaredo10 - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:37 AM

dont hate…Rangers are the team to bear

      • stakex - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:50 AM

The Rangers gave up Dubinsky and Anisimov for Nash…. I don’t care if he does flop, hes still an upgrade. Throw in a more experienced Kreider and the Rangers could be a very dangerous team.

Of course with a 48 game season, anything can happen.

    • barkar942 - Dec 28, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Yes, hopefully Nash will be a huge help to the offensive side- but a 48 game season with Hank between the pipes may set an all-time record for lowest GAA.

      • killerpgh - Dec 28, 2012 at 1:24 PM

You do understand what the 2nd “A” in GAA means right?

  7. greatminnesotasportsmind - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:55 AM

LMAO at everyone thinking we are anywhere near close to a deal. We’ve already seen a “target date” back in December. It’s still no different

  8. doubles22 - Dec 28, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Side A makes an offer to Side B.

Details of offer slowly “leak” to media. Side A has made huge concessions, finish line is in sight, blah blah blah.

Fans, looking for even the tiniest morsel to nibble on, gobble it up. Let’s get fired up to drop the puck!

Side B takes an amount of time ranging from 10 minutes to 2 days to evaluate the deets, then empties it’s collective bladder all over Side A proposal.

Fans feel immense sense of panic, anger, or apathy. Hockey hopes are completely squashed.

    Rinse, repeat.

    @jcmeyer
Even a broken clock is right twice a day. If he/Joey keep guessing and changing their dates every time they’re wrong, they’ll eventually happen to be right.

  10. hotloinsofsid - Dec 28, 2012 at 12:00 PM

u know nothing, the greatest franchise of all time will be spanking everyone on jan 19!!! soup can army assemble!!!

  11. kub3163 - Dec 28, 2012 at 12:00 PM

Every time I heard things like this all I really read is blah, blah, blah, B.S.

I’m sure through this whole lockout the NHL has lost a lot of fans but I will be back the minute the puck drops be it this year or next and to be honest I would rather it be next instead of a shortened season.

  12. sdelmonte - Dec 28, 2012 at 12:14 PM

A week long camp? Followed, no doubt, by a spate of injuries that makes the entire season a battle of attrition. Can’t imagine that this would make for great play.

  13. rodeoclowndc - Dec 28, 2012 at 12:33 PM

…Waits for Fehr to screw it all up… “We’re this close, boys – let’s find something else to stick it to ‘em!”

  14. sportsfan69 - Dec 28, 2012 at 1:50 PM

    Blomfeld called it correct.

  15. thedavesiknowiknow - Dec 28, 2012 at 3:18 PM

Good. By then the Juniors will be over, and we can pass the time until the next tourney by watching the watered-down, semi-legitimate older brother fail to put a better product on the ice. Pass.

  16. proudliberal85392 - Dec 28, 2012 at 9:48 PM

When it happens, you’ll all be forced to admit that my esteemed colleague, Blomfeld, was indeed correct.

    • ravenscaps48 - Dec 29, 2012 at 12:03 AM

How many profiles do you have, Blomfeld?

    • blomfeld - Dec 29, 2012 at 12:29 AM

Hi Proudliberal ! Good to hear from you again friend! Anyway, don’t worry about this CBA business, as it’s all been taken care of … I guarantee it! :) Now I’m not sure how closely you read this site, but the following is something which I posted just before Christmas, where I likened Id4joey’s fate here at PHT, to Custer and the 7th Cavalry at the Little Bighorn back in 1876! … take note of who comes to the rescue in the end! :)

      _____________________________________________________________

*** on the slopes overlooking the Little Bighorn River, June 25, 1876 ***

Blomfeld: Joey, what’s your situation on the right ?

Joey: We can’t hold ‘em Blom … Sportfan’s line is collapsing and pulling back !

Blomfeld: How about Valois’ people on the left ?

Joey: Same thing … they’re badly damaged and asking “us” for help !

Blomfeld: wait a minute .. did you hear that ? .. look, over there on the ridge !

Joey: well I’ll be damned !… it’s Proudliberal’s company coming to our rescue !

Blomfeld: that it is friend ! … I just knew we were gonna make it ! … :)

      • blomfeld - Dec 29, 2012 at 12:49 AM

Ravencaps48 – Listen pal, this “multiple handle” BS is starting to become boring. I’m just a guy who lives in Vancouver British Columbia and my words happen to resonate on occasion with other like-minded folk out there on the internets .. what’s the big deal? Just give it a rest my friend and be happy! :)

        *** special Confederate-KHL video selection for comrade Ravencaps48! ***

why would the players accept this?

keep the lockout going and make the owners suffer!
