Report: Nashville shopping Del Zotto

Vancouver’s been the busiest team at this weekend’s NHL Entry Draft, but Nashville’s doing all it can to get in that conversation.

After making a big splash in acquiring James Neal and reportedly having a trade for Jason Spezza rejected, the Preds are now looking to trade Michael Del Zotto, per TVA.

Though curious, it’s not an incredibly surprising development. Del Zotto struggled after coming over from the Rangers midway through the year, sitting as a healthy scratch at one point after then-head coach Barry Trotz said the defenseman’s “game has slipped.”

Following the year — in which the 25-year-old had just one goal and five points in 25 games for the Preds — Del Zotto, a pending RFA, said he had “no idea” about a potential new deal with Nashville.

I know Del Zotto’s game has fallen off a cliff and he makes far too many boneheaded mistakes but I still believe there’s some upside. I watched him when he broke out with New York and it was clear the kid could play in this league. I’d have to imagine his pricetag would be extremely low (esp since it’s his rights), so why not take a chance. The Flyers already have a turnover prone blueline without MDZ’s puck moving ability… so I’d be fine with Hextall taking a shot on him. Give him a one year deal and see if there’s anything there. At worst he could be a cheap #7.

And maybe they could find a way to slip Lecavalier into that deal. Spezza doesn’t want to be there and I’d imagine Stastny will look elsewhere, so he could just fit. He didn’t play center here and it clearly hurt his game. Put him back in the middle (not on the 4th line) and he can still put up 50pts.

Carnac says! Edmonton, Calgary, or Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg! (Carnak was a Johnny Carson prognosticator character for you young pups out there-youtube it. You’ll be laughing your butts off)!

    That didn’t take long.

I have no doubt that someone will take a shot on Del Zotto. His game has obviously not been the same as it was a couple years ago, but he’s still young and the raw talent is there. Its just a matter of finding a good situation for him to re-discover his game.

I don’t understand what that means. What sort of situation does he need to perform to his full potential?

I actually think Nashville is a place where he could bounceback, it’s too bad they don’t want him. He clearly was a downgrade from Klein for Trotz’s system but for Laviolette’s, it’s a whole new ballgame. But Nashville will probably look to FA or give more time to someone like Ekholm.

Maybe a team like Edmonton, where he could fit like a 4th forward (they already do it with Schultz). Pair him with a steadier guy like Ference or Nikitin. It won’t help their defenduve game but they might outscore clubs. Possibly Calgary, but I’d still like to see him in Philly. They kid put up 37 points at 19 and and 41 at 21, and 21pts in the lockout season (with a +6)… now after a horrendous year folks are ready to give up on him. At barely 25. Dmen don’t usually figure it out completely til they’re 26-29, so he’s gonna get a shot somewhere. I’m hoping it’s in Philly… for cheap.

Are there any teams out there looking for a defenseman who has the puck hop over his stick at the blue line? If so, DelZotto is your man.

Carolina should try and swing him, of the Jets. Teams that have nothing to lose but if DZ pans out would look really smart.

Bring back del Zotto!! I remember the goals he scored in the playoffs. He’s cheap. AV’s system might change him…

    del zaster

I completely understand that sentiment. His last two seasons have been poor, to say the least, however his +/- stats (overrated I know) since he entered the league have been -20, -5, +20, +6, and -9. Clearly up and down production but it shows that he has potential. Keith Yandle put up 53 points this year and was still -23 on a defensively stacked team. If MDZ gets back to producing 10 goals and 35-45 points it will be well worth his questionable defense (sometimes). Offensive defenders are at a premium and MDZ is a wildcard to reach his former glory. Please Ron take a low risk chance on this kids upside. Braydon Coburn is a turnover machine and he doesn’t bring nearly the same offensive.

We’ve all seen the decline of Tyler Myers (prob brought on by high expectations) and he’d cost far more to acquire. Even as a PP specialist MDZ could be an under the radar pickup who pans out. Let’s be honest, he was a terrible fit in Barry Trotz scheme and that hurt his game even more.

I’ve watched DZ bring him back Sather especially if Stralman walks. He has potential and needs his confidence restored.

Can’t turn the puck over worse than Girardi. I said it :(

Is his value really that low???? shocking well why not Josh Bailey for Del Zotto both need a change of scenery to restart

    • phillyphanatic77 - Jun 29, 2014 at 1:22 PM

That would be a good deal for both sides but I have a feeling Snow is still hesitant to trade away a center with 20 goal potential (unless it’s for more). I know Isles fans expect a lot more from a player of his draft status but it’s not as if he’s been surrounded by the best wingers. He’s only 24. But if I was Nashville I’d take that, they need a struggling young center with potential far more than a struggling blueliner with potential.

      • canadiansportsfan77 - Jun 29, 2014 at 3:10 PM

Well that’s just it. The Isles already have higher depth at C with Neilson Strome and Nelson so Bailey will just be relegated to the wing to play. They need depth and at least myself, I’m a big fan of Del Zotto so I think it works for both teams.

There was totally something personal going on with him and trotz; he was not given much of a chance. Id like him to sign a cheap contract with the preds so he could try and prove himself under a new coach.. if he doesnt prove himself shop him because he’d have a cheap contract that could become a bargain if a team would be able to revive his play.
