Here come the Coburn-Oilers rumors again

If you missed out on the rumors last summer that involved the Edmonton Oilers being hot after Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn, fear not for they are new again.

Mark Spector of Sportsnet spoke with Oilers GM Craig MacTavish about what the team needs to address this summer and finding defensive depth via free agency or trades was high on his list.

“We’d like to get a five-six defenseman who is a good penalty killer and good shut-down player,” MacTavish said. “So, we’re looking at both extremes of our defense. We’re trying to get bigger up front. We’ve got the toughest element to get (skill), but I think we can augment that with players who are bigger, stronger and more productive than what we’ve had.”

Spector followed that up suggesting the Oilers again target Coburn to help beef up the defense. David Staples of the Edmonton Journal has an idea what might work to get a deal done between the two sides.

Would the Oilers give up Martin Marincin or Oscar Klefbom for Coburn? That is what it would take, one would expect. Marincin could well be headed for the kind of career Coburn now has, so would it be wise to give up on that kind of prospect? The Oilers also seem high on Klefbom.

The Flyers surely can’t afford to just give away defensemen and a younger blue liner in return would help. There’s no doubt there’s a need there for both teams, but finding help in each other is the hard part. The talk about Coburn from those in Edmonton certainly makes it seem like there’s a desire there.

The trade rumor was a package with coburn for Eberle. Don’t know how you swing that now

I get that they want Coburn, but don’t give any future star or established player. a bucket of used pucks would be enough.

I doubt the Oilers will be able to steal him away from the Flyers like the Flyers did when they traded Alexei Zhitnik to the Thrashers for Coburn (Just one of many stupid trades Don Waddell did that had the Thrashers had real owners that were committed to the team, would have gotten him fired.).

Both teams seem to be open to a trade like that. Oilers want an established Dman with size and Flyers want young prospects at the blue line. Make it happen Hex!!!

coburn is not very good. he logged heavy minutes for flyers because the state of their defense made it necessary. he is now the guy to move. first it was meszaros which they did. flyers didn’t get sucked in with mesz’s good play last yr after yrs of injury and stealing money. coburn hasn’t lived up to his contract either and he will be the next to go. flyers will use that saved cap money in other ways. book it.

Did you watch any flyers games last season?

    • flyerspsu - Jun 14, 2014 at 7:25 PM

Coburn is inconsistent but he is also their best shutdown guy and is probably the only Flyer who can still eat up big minutes against good competition w/o faltering, I wouldn’t be against moving him but you would need to find a way to fill hole he would leave

Ever been to Edmonton?? It’s Americas version of Buffalo…That said from a Flames fan stand point I hope a deal gets done… There’s nothing better than the Battle of Alberta

    Coburn is going nowhere.

        Based on what?

      • President Charles Logan - Jun 14, 2014 at 9:02 PM

uhhh have you watched him not be able to even make a simple first pass coming out of his own end?? the turn overs?/ the blown coverage? his lack of foot speed?? plus he;’s been there for like 9 years… time for a change move on already

      • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Jun 14, 2014 at 10:29 PM

Logan you consitantly show that you don’t watch the players your trash let alone hockey. You obviously don’t know who your talkin about. Couborn is one if the fastest on the team and has real good legs an is a reliable defensemen with a decent first pass. Stop trolling on players you know nothing about and the flyers in general

      • President Charles Logan - Jun 15, 2014 at 12:15 AM

lol yeah thats why there’s been more then dozens upon dozens of posts from YOUR OWN fellow fans on this site calling him out for his lack of … (everything that i listed and more)..
get back on the golf course where you belong you dope

Not quite sure why the oilers have had consistent interest in couburn but with that said if they have a younger version of him ill gladly take him and help save against the cap

  10. phillyphanatic77 - Jun 14, 2014 at 5:04 PM

If the Flyers can pry away Oscar Klefbom for Braydon Coburn I will definitely start worshiping at the shrine of the Hextall. A 20-year, 6’3″ former first rounder with two-way ability… sign me up. If only he was a righty. But whatever at least it would clear 4.5mil of necessary cap space.

  11. flyerspsu - Jun 14, 2014 at 7:17 PM

Coburn is easily the Flyers best shutdown guy, he can be inconsistent and has all the tools to be better than he actually is, but he also has logged huges minutes against top competition for years in Philly w/o a bad season other than in 2013, every other year he has been just solid against the other teams best

So dealing him would make the Flyers considerably worse on the defensive end and would leave guys like 40 year old timonen, MacDonald, Grossman or schenn as the guys to anchor the defense, that would awful, so if Coburns were to be traded they would need a plan to make up that hole he would leave

  12. President Charles Logan - Jun 14, 2014 at 10:10 PM

I think the flyers defense is bad as a whole unit as they are assembled now.. they need to mix and match better.

  13. gbatap - Jun 15, 2014 at 12:21 AM

Oilers would be stupid to cough up Klefbom. That being said, that’s exactly what I would expect from Kevin Lowe and his ex-teammate minions. It Katz was smart he would blow the whole thing up and put Nicholson in charge.

Luz56…have YOU ever been to Buffalo?

Your IQ shines brightly here, kid.

First of all…Edmonton is in Canada, so it would be “Canada’s version of Buffalo.”

Second, that’s even false as I’m pretty sure Edmonton doesn’t have one of the “Wonders of the World,” like Buffalo has Niagara Falls. I also bet Edmonton does not have a Six Flags, and an NFL team. Nor does Edmonton have a brand new facility that will steal the NHL scouting combine from the almighty Toronto, like Buffalo has in the HarborCenter…which is also going to hold the Prospect’s game and the World Junior Championships. Buffalo is also on the map now to hold the draft…and Edmonton’s never had the Winter Classic, which was actually originated in Buffalo.

Go figure the ONLY NFL team to truly reside in the state of NY…the Buffalo Bills.

Scotty Bowman lives in Buffalo, so does…Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Mike Peca, Lindy Ruff…and so many more who have come through Buffalo sports in the past…and the present love it there as well, just ask Mario Williams and some others. Christian Ehrhoff and Robyn Regehr gave up their “no-trade” to come to Buffalo. Not to mention all the wealthy and powerful business and political people who live in the area and call Upstate, NY, “home.”

It’s not Miami, it’s not Los Angeles…but it’s not Detroit and it’s better than Edmonton.

If you’ve never been there, you have no place to talk…and I’m not even from there, nor do I live there. I live in the Finger Lakes, an hour east of Buffalo and an hour west of Syracuse…go ahead and look it up, Upstate, NY, is absolutely gorgeous! And this is coming from someone who lived down south for 2 years and hated the idea of growing up in New York State. Now, I absolutely love it. It’s God’s land. I highly suggest visiting in the summer months…I guarantee you enjoy your stay here…and we would love to have you visit anytime. (And all I heard about moving down south was the “southern hospitality,” well, this is not NYC…the people here are wonderful.)

A lot of places look like butt-stink…but until you visit that place, you shouldn’t knock it. I’ve been plenty of places I dreaded the thought of going to, and I ended up loving it. Buffalo is a massive college-city, as well as a die-hard hockey and football city. It has amazing people, food and music. It has a beautiful waterfront. It has an awesome downtown. It has plenty of bars. And it’s 15 minutes from another country.

It literally has everything…and it is getting more each year. It is absolutely a city on the rise…and if you’ve never been, again, I highly suggest you go. I promise you won’t regret it and your opinion will change! :-)

(I’m sorry about the rant, but with such a misguided, short-sighted, uninformed and uneducated comment…you’re not just insulting the City of Buffalo, NY…you’re insulting an entire region of hard-working, dedicated, loyal and wonderful people…who would accept you with open arms if you moved here or came to visit…can’t say that about many places.)

Best wishes to everyone on this beautiful Sunday afternoon…straight from the sunny Finger Lakes, of gorgeous Upstate, NY! ;-)

(Congrats to all you Kings fans, well done!)
