TORONTO — Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul tried to do his part to help his team stay in the playoff race by returning from a lower-body injury on Saturday night.

Unfortunately for Lupul and the Maple Leafs, he reaggravated his injury during Toronto’s 4-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets and his status for the future is unknown.

Lupul’s injury, on top of the strained MCL starting goalie Jonathan Bernier suffered on Thursday night against Boston, serves to pile on the depressing reality in Toronto that the Maple Leafs are likely going to miss the playoffs after making their first appearance in seven seasons last year.

Lupul is third on the Maple Leafs in goals with 22 and sixth on the team in points with 44 in 69 games. He’s been able to stay mostly healthy this season and helped the Leafs get off to a hot start, but like most everything else for Toronto of late, his production has cooled with three goals and two assists in his past nine games.

Toronto has three games left and trail Columbus by one point with the Blue Jackets having five games to play.

It was actually 9 seasons last year. Gotta give it to NBC for accurate reporting.

OK 288, the Leafs made the playoffs in 2004, there were no playoffs in 2005, then they missed in 2006, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11 and 12. That’s 7 seasons they missed, just like the writer said. Now, 2013 was the first time in 9 YEARS they’d made it, so your confusion is understandable, but Joe still will be expecting your apology. A box of Canadian chocolates, perhaps Laura Secord, would be nice.

“…the Maple Leafs are likely going to miss the playoffs after making their first appearance in seven seasons last year.”

No apology is necessary because Joe is still incorrect with that sentence. Now, if he had said something like 7 seasons since the massive lockout or something of that sort, sure, I’ll go with that. Most, if not all, in the hockey world sees the Leafs as missing the playoffs 9 straight years. I still stand by my statement, and to add that so long NBC still has Millbury and McGuire on as analysts, they’re a joke when it comes to hockey and that tidbit reflects that.

Also….why Laura Secord…? Why not maple syrup or poutine or our awesome Canadian beer that actually gets you drunk…? I would be more than happy to share those in the name of a good party. lol
