Leafs fall to Flyers, lose their seventh straight

The collapse continues.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, in a bid to make it back-to-back playoff appearances, have now lost seven straight games. Their latest defeat in this free fall came Friday night to the Philadelphia Flyers, as the Leafs lost by a final score of 4-2. Not even a new franchise record for the fastest goal to begin a period – off the stick of James van Riemsdyk four seconds into the second period – could help the Leafs on this night.

Currently tied with three other teams at 80 points for the two remaining playoff positions in the Eastern Conference Wild Card, the Leafs are on the post-season bubble but will remain in the 10th position. Perhaps the only positive from the night is that the Columbus Blue Jackets, part of that four-team logjam in the East, also lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

On Friday, the Leafs found themselves down by a pair of goals in the second period and just couldn’t recover. Now the question becomes, can they recover from this latest losing streak?

    Bye bye Randy!

    • c9castine - Mar 29, 2014 at 1:58 AM

yeah fire the coach thatll change things.

first go get a real starting goaltender. took the flyers like 15 years to figure that one out.

      • flyerspsu - Mar 29, 2014 at 2:50 AM

        Bernier has been great …

      • c9castine - Mar 29, 2014 at 5:51 PM

        great at what? losing games?

hes posted some decent statistics, for what those are worth (nothing really) and won some games for them. IM talking about a real starting goaltender. A goalie who can go in night in and night out and win games or give you a chance every night.

i realize im kinda talking out of both sides of my mouth here, saying they play terrible defense and then not really giving bernier a chance. but im just not convinced hes the guy. maybe im wrong, but either way whats happening back there with reimer and bernier just isnt working.

at the very least, pick bernier and stick with him, and find a guy who is willing to back him up. because it doesnt seem like reimer likes that role and talking about it in the media does nobody any good.

I predicted the leafs would not make the playoffs, and my prediction looks to be coming true. I made that prediction several times.

You must copy & paste your comment with the date/time stamp. Otherwise it’s all smoke.

      • c9castine - Mar 29, 2014 at 5:52 PM

so what i say that every year. ive been right a lot. lol

if you would have said the sabres are going to make the playoffs, and they did – now thatd be something to write home about.

    LETS GO RAPTORS

  3. everyonesuksbutme - Mar 28, 2014 at 10:15 PM

Crappy franchise, crappy front office, crappy coach, crappy talent……leafs suck! Flyers in 2014!

  4. withseidelinn - Mar 28, 2014 at 10:15 PM

What a joke. I am a die hard Leafs fan.. if a radio speech from your captain can’t get your team going… there’s an issue.
    Absolutely brutal.

    • sabatimus - Mar 28, 2014 at 10:24 PM

If your captain is Dion Phaneuf, there’s an issue.

    • therooneyskilledwebster - Mar 28, 2014 at 11:48 PM

So Dion took to radio in an attempt to rally the troops? No one will ever confuse Phaneuf with Winston Churchill.

    • sumkat - Mar 29, 2014 at 12:27 AM

did that really happen? on the radio? seems like something you should do, I dunno in the locker room. Or on the bench. Or even better, on the ice with your play

  5. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Mar 28, 2014 at 10:33 PM

They play the Panthers on the 10th….it would probably be wise to just stay down there, with the winter we’ve had the courses here won’t be open by mid-April.

  6. broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 29, 2014 at 12:01 AM

Awesome assist on Simmonds goal by Phaneuf.

    • sumkat - Mar 29, 2014 at 12:26 AM

Phaneuf looked bad all around tonight. I haven’t watched a lot of the Leafs this year, but I assume he’s had to have played better than that during the season. But tonight, he looked lost. Out of position all the time, and even when he was in the right spot, just didn’t make plays

    • flyerspsu - Mar 29, 2014 at 1:10 AM

dude can we talk about simmonds? the guy is turning into an all around stud, and for 3.9 mil for the next 6 years? absolute steal

      • mrhogan88 - Mar 29, 2014 at 3:42 AM

Ah it seems like just yesterday the Flyers were getting taken to task for trading their “captain.” I’d say the won that trade going away.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 29, 2014 at 5:35 AM

And there were plenty of fans (Flyers included) crucifying Holmgren for handing out that contract… now it’s becoming one of the biggest bargains in the NHL. Not only is Simmonds a relentless force, his energy is contagious. Great player, excellent leader. And it just seems like yesterday that ppl like president Charles logan were calling him an overrated stiff.

    • tdrusher225 - Mar 29, 2014 at 9:39 AM

I think the Leafs need to understand what type of player Phaneuf is and stop asking him to be a #1 shutdown defenseman. Like him or not, they’re putting way too much pressure on this guy and asking him to do things he really can’t do. Chief among which is match up against a team’s best offensive players every night.

  7. sumkat - Mar 29, 2014 at 12:24 AM

Still a tough road to go for the Flyers. If they can pull 5 points out of their next 4 games (vs Boston, vs CBJ, @Boston, @stlouis), I think they are in. That will be no small feat, Boston and St Louis are the best 2 teams in the league, plus they just beat St. Louis last week, so they’ll be looking for payback. Columbus is fighting for their playoff lives.

If they can get through that stretch with 4 points, I think they are still in good shape. They should get 7 points out of their last 5 (Carolina, Tampa, Florida, Buffalo, Pittsburgh). That Rangers loss to Calgary tonight could loom large, with the Flyers still being a point behind, but with 2 more games to play. Rangers have a much softer schedule going forward though, so it’s going to be an uphill climb to get home ice

    • flyerspsu - Mar 29, 2014 at 1:07 AM

the Flyers have a 97% chance of making the playoffs

      • sumkat - Mar 29, 2014 at 1:11 AM

Leafs had a 90% chance last week

      • bsaures - Mar 29, 2014 at 1:18 AM

Until they lost 7 in a row and 8 of the last 10

      • flyerspsu - Mar 29, 2014 at 2:01 AM

well theres 9 games left now and the Flyers are playing their best hockey as opposed to their worst in toronto’s case

  8. nicofthenorthstar - Mar 29, 2014 at 2:04 AM

    Dear Leafs Fans,
    I feel your pain.
    Sincerely,
    MN Wild Fan

  9. toiletclown - Mar 29, 2014 at 6:05 AM

Here we go with the Wayne Simmonds is the best player in the world now. Stupid, stupid Philthy…

    • isithockeyseasonyet - Mar 29, 2014 at 12:54 PM

You really need to let it go, the guy who said that isn’t even with the organization anymore, the only stupidity here is you trolling about comments made 2 years ago, it’s 2014 loser

    • laxman1944 - Mar 29, 2014 at 1:34 PM

      Flush

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 29, 2014 at 2:03 PM

If you don’t see the guy game in and game out then you have no clue. He brings the same energy every night, it’s impossible to try taking the puck off his stick, and good luck moving him from in front of the net. He’s a huge reason why the Flyers PP is lethal (2nd in the league w 13 PP goals). He’s an excellent player and he’s just about to enter his prime.

Bring something of substance once in awhile other than the same “Philthy” bs to every Flyers article.

  10. beergold - Mar 29, 2014 at 7:04 AM

And the two franchise cornerstone(d) players of the Leafs, Kessel and Neon, lift their team on their courageous talented shoulders and…………..oh wait.

  11. bsaures - Mar 29, 2014 at 7:25 AM

The ACC has a new promotion for the remaining games watch the game on the ice and the movie Titanic on the jumbotron. If the leafs lose after the ship sinks everyone gets a free slice of pizza!

  12. chrisk61 - Mar 29, 2014 at 8:35 AM

first, everyone is pointing to luke schenn-jvr trade as one that holmgren lost. well it looks like the toronto defense is terrible which is core reason they are tanking. perhaps losing schenn has hurt them more than gaining jvr.

second, remember how toronto fell apart in 3rd period of gm 7 vs boston last yr. blew 3 goal lead in 3rd period. this skid, which most likely costs toronto the playoffs, is much longer choke version of that.

  13. patshal - Mar 29, 2014 at 9:26 AM

This was an obvious game. You’ve got the second hottest team in the NHL facing the worst team as of late in the NHL. The Flyers are showing everyone how much they want a playoff spot. Flyers vs bruins will be a great game at 12:30 on Saturday. The two best teams as of late are facing each other.

  14. patshal - Mar 29, 2014 at 9:28 AM

I made a mistake. That game is on Sunday at 12:30. Bruins vs capitals is Saturday at 12:30.

    • macjacmccoy - Mar 29, 2014 at 10:27 AM

Bruins have to play a game a day before they play Philly? Nice. Flyers will take all the help they can get.

      • isithockeyseasonyet - Mar 29, 2014 at 12:56 PM

It’s too bad they don’t have to play a west coast game first ha! Only kidding and that comment is only made out of respect for the bruins, that team is a monster
