Red Wings find a (weird) way to win against Penguins

People throw out terms like “finding ways to win” a lot in sports, but the Detroit Red Wings are making it difficult to avoid cliches as they keep scrapping their way to playoff contention despite some serious obstacles. Thursday’s 5-4 OT win against the Pittsburgh Penguins captured much of that spirit (with maybe a few extra dashes of oddness).

Let’s just review some of the weird/bad/challenging things the Red Wings faced and ultimately overcame:

  • Shortly after a highly questionable cross checking infraction by James Neal, the Penguins changed a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead heading into the third period with three goals in about three-and-a-half minutes.
  • An injury-depleted team saw more than one lead evaporate; Craig Adams‘ 4-4 goal couldn’t have felt good.
  • Neal wasn’t the only important forward to take a shaky penalty. David Legwand received a five-minute major and game misconduct for butt ending Evgeni Malkin in the final minutes of the third. Remarkably, the Red Wings killed off that five-minute power play.
  • The Red Wings then won the game with fractions of a second left thanks to a bizarre Daniel Alfredsson goal:

The Red Wings leave themselves in an increasingly promising situation. While they trail wild card teams Toronto and the New York Rangers as well as top bubble team Washington, they have at least two games in hand on each of those teams.

They have some big games remaining, including one more contest against the Maple Leafs (at Toronto on March 29) and the Columbus Blue Jackets (at Nationwide Arena on March 25). The odds still seem stacked against Detroit in some ways, yet they keep proving that they won’t be an easy out.

Unbelievable. The Penguins put 3 goals into their own net tonight. They should have won 4-2, this is starting to remind me of the Playoffs with all these crazy bounces. It was a very sloppy game from the Penguins, the defense was really bad tonight, and the Penguins turned the puck over way to much tonight. On the bright side it looks like they have found 4 good lines.

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Mar 20, 2014 at 10:55 PM

Indeed. I’m no big Pens fan, but to be serious, the Wings were only marginally involved in winning this one, with 3 gifts from Pitt. Take off the goal the Wings scored on themselves and it’s a 3-2 Pitt win. Goofy but exciting game.

      • paperkid96 - Mar 21, 2014 at 6:51 AM

You are correct sir. The Grand Rapids Griffins were more involved than the Wings in winning this one.

      • 101starmymedic - Mar 21, 2014 at 8:52 AM

I’d be jealous too if a MINOR LEAGUE team could beat the Pittsburgh Penguins. It’s ok to hate. We’re used to it, we’re Red Wings fans.

    • valoisvipers - Mar 20, 2014 at 11:39 PM

I happy for the Wings to get two desperately needed points, the Pens can eke by with only one point.

    • polegojim - Mar 21, 2014 at 12:50 AM

Pens87and71… that’s why coaches preach ‘PUT PUCKS ON NET’… and the Wings gave one back if you’ll recall.

Proud that the Wings 2nd and 3rds hung with the Pens 1st Teamers.

Grit and Heart to never stop.

@nothanksimdriving…. not true… they drove the puck and fired around the net… that’s hockey.

  2. c9castine - Mar 20, 2014 at 10:50 PM

Well, all I have to say is you have to work hard to be lucky. And lucky as hell they were.

    • steelpenbucs87 - Mar 21, 2014 at 9:14 AM

Completely agree – no one knocks pucks in their own net from the circles when they have time. Get pucks to the net, pressure the defense, and mistakes like those happen.

Now it was unfortunate that there were 3(!) of them in one game, but I’m not overly broken up about this loss. In an 82 game season you’re going to have those kind of weird games.

Now, what DOES frustrate me is the complete misuse of the best player in the world on a 5 minute, potentially game-winning power play. Sid needs to be on the off half wall or on goal line extended. No idea why they decided to run it from the point rather than try to pick shots like they normally do.

  3. sjsharks66 - Mar 20, 2014 at 11:07 PM

Just curious ( AGAIN ) why Neal gets an article for a 2 minute penalty. While the 5 minute major gets nothing. It’s getting ridiculous PHT. Stop fishing for page hits.

    • mp1131211 - Mar 21, 2014 at 3:02 AM

      Nice call

    • getinthefastlane - Mar 21, 2014 at 8:23 AM

I couldn’t have said it better myself. At this point its becoming comical. As soon as he took a penalty, I could see the PHT headline….”Neal Gets 2 For Cross-Checking, Will He Be Getting a Call from the League?”

If these hockey bloggers at PHT really wants to start a discussion, why not have an article criticizing the officiating for not assessing a 5 minute major on the play? Anyone could write something to stir the pot, but I actually come here for intelligent analysis from experts. Maybe I should re-think that as this is turning into a reality show that’s just trying to draw attention to themselves.

    • c9castine - Mar 21, 2014 at 11:30 AM

no, the legwand incident did get a blog post, but serisouly what do you expect.

of course thry were going to try to stir the pot when its James Neal and the Penguins involved.

whatever let everybody cry about it. it was a cross check, hit him in the shoulder and it pushed up into his head. happens a lot just not typically when the puck is nowhere to be found lol…

  4. pitpenguinsrulez - Mar 20, 2014 at 11:08 PM

That game has left my blood boiling!!!!!!! Seriously Rob Scuderi needs bought out at years end. His play this year hasn’t been great. The excuse of “Oh well we haven’t won the cup since we had him!” Oh wow they say that all the time when they bring a guy back who was on that team. How you don’t score on a 5-Minute Powerplay is beyond me. Oh wait I know how…it’s called they just pass, pass, pass, pass the puck until they get the one good shot. It’s been that way since before Bylsma came here. I’ll say it now but I have no real care for Malkin. Yeah he scored two goals but as normal he takes a penalty in the offensive zone. His drop pass drives me insane cause that’s all he really does. That phantom call on Neal which negated the powerplay was horrible. The player who lost the stick never made an effort to regain it as he kept playing the puck. Also suspending Neal won’t get the message through his head. He’s a great offensive sniper but he just doesn’t stop with the dirty play. Also per sources close to the team, I’ve found out that Neal isn’t well liked on the team. Overall this game has left me pretty well angry. Have to regroup on Saturday.

    • laxman1944 - Mar 20, 2014 at 11:30 PM

SSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH………….settle down and have some warm milk.

Dr. Sid make it all better

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Mar 20, 2014 at 11:36 PM

This comment shows why you are an idiot and know nothing about hockey and why all you pens fans are alike and have the stereo type label and rightfully deserved. For one I don’t know why you would buy out scuderi that is beyond me, he’s been hurt alot and when healthy he’s one of the better shut down defensmen in the league. He can’t solve your entire teams horrible defensive game by himself. Two, you guys are always in praise of Bylsma and are now understanding that he’s one of the most overrated coaches in the leagues and the Olympics he was terrible. And three, you constantly blow Malkin but you wanna pretend like you’ve been hating him. Extremely overpaid and is horrible defensively and shelfish. It’s insane that you think that the Neal cross check was a phantom call. That seals it for me that you know nothing about hockey. Oh and the fact that you pretend to have sources from the team is flat out comical. Your like 15, whose your sources, the janitor at the consol center whose your dad.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Mar 20, 2014 at 11:49 PM

Rule 10.3: A player will be penalized if he throws, tosses, slides or shoots a stick to a teammate on the ice as Quincey did to Glendening

Rule 53.2: When moving stick that is not broken, no penalty (if) it does not interfere with play and player .. is not trying to retrieve it.

So tell me again how that’s a penalty on Neal?

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Mar 20, 2014 at 11:56 PM

You are a complete jackass. When on here have I ever really praised Malkin? Disco should’ve been caned ages ago. Even when Scuds has been healthy his play has been subpar. He’s not been the player that he was in his first run here. But like most Philly trash you’ll resort to the typical response of “Oh your just a bandwagon Pens fan, blah blah blah!”

      • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Mar 21, 2014 at 1:42 AM

I’m not talkin about the stick penalty I’m talkin about the crosscheck to the head I figured you were talkin about considering you think your pens boys do no wrong. I didn’t watch the game cause I hate both teams. Get over it they loss. Your team gets away with more penalties then any other it’s about time one doesn’t go your way. And you praise every player on that team the second they are doin good. Don’t pretend you know what your talkin about

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Mar 21, 2014 at 1:54 AM

Well I guess the hockey expert on here. Maybe the NHL Network should hire a scumbag like you.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Mar 21, 2014 at 1:55 AM

Well I guess your the hockey expert on here. Maybe the NHL Network should hire a scumbag like you.

      • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Mar 21, 2014 at 4:13 AM

It doesn’t take a hockey expert to realize you know nothing about hockey. I never usually look at the thumbs up stuff but I find it hilarious that you thumbed up your own comments 22 times. Did you really think it was believable that 22 people agreed with your stupid comments in the course of ten minutes at 2am. I know how them thumbs up can be a real confidence booster when your 15 though.

      • hockey412 - Mar 21, 2014 at 8:16 AM

Did you just call Malkin ‘shelfish’? Are you 12? Is that a cross between someone who thinks of only themselves and a lobster?

Your comments about “all” Pens fans are shortsighted, biased, idiotic, and most dangerously very prejudiced. Prejudiced people, like yourself, are apt to do things like rip an entire fan base and a coach for not knowing anything about hockey while your team is still FOURTEEN points behind. FOURTEEN.

The Flyers are hot right now – they’ve earned some praise, which I will gladly give, and they’re playing hard. The Pens AREN’T, right now. They stop skating when they get the puck, they are trying everything the ‘hard way’ instead of taking what’s there, and in general look like a team that’s already made the playoffs and is trying to ‘fine tune’, which never works. Anyone that knows the Pens knows that they go through this at least once a year, and then they sort it out.

So please, just shut up and enjoy the ride…keep your comments inside the vehicle at all times, until the season comes to a complete and final stop.

      • 101starmymedic - Mar 21, 2014 at 8:59 AM

Penguins fans are the biggest group of bandwagoners in the league. They’re even worse than Kings and Blackhawks fans.

Top 3 Bandwagons teams (teams with most bandwagon fans):
        #1 Penguins
        #2 Kings
        #3 Blackhawks

Bottom 3 Bandwagon teams (teams with most dedicated fans):
        #1 Red Wings
        #2 Canadiens
        #3 Bruins

I never listen to anything any Penguins fans say because 10 years ago, when the penguins were irrelevant, they weren’t saying anything. Now there’s this influx of Penguins fans who really know nothing about hockey.

Neal cross-checking call = no brainer
Neal stick call = referree discretion (which ALL officiating this year has been utter horse**** so no one should be surprised)

      • ibieiniid - Mar 21, 2014 at 9:30 AM

BOTH of you sound like illiterate idiots, if I’m being honest. but I’ve long established that pitpenguinsrulez knows nothing about hockey.

      • hockey412 - Mar 21, 2014 at 9:33 AM

Oh, boy….another winner….ok let’s just hear you out then.

There has ALWAYS been a die-hard backing of the team in Pittsburgh. You wouldn’t know it from the legacy of the Pens – but Pittsburgh is a very small town. Though ownership decisions were very bad 10 years ago, the team was still supported. Your facts are twisted, and this was a very dark era for many Pens fans. It would be like me saying – I’m not going to listen to you, because when your dog died, you had nothing to say. Pure selfish idiocracy – hopefully most see through the crap.

Also – “I never listen to anything any Penguins fans say because 10 years ago, when the penguins were irrelevant, they weren’t saying anything. Now there’s this influx of Penguins fans who really know nothing about hockey.”….sounds like pure genius stuff there…but really – 10 years ago – WHERE DID YOU GO TO TALK TO PENS FANS? What website were you on 10 years ago…or what dive bar in Pittsburgh did you go, to convene with Pens fans? Becuase I have news for you, idiot. Here we were.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Mar 21, 2014 at 10:33 AM

I know nothing about hockey? Yeah that’s very laughable to hear from two scumbag Flyer fans. Let me guess both of you have a PhD in hockey knowledge?

      • ibieiniid - Mar 21, 2014 at 10:37 AM

no but we’ve been fans since before 2004.

      • comeonnowguys - Mar 21, 2014 at 11:07 AM

So, three of the last four teams to win the Stanley Cup. Yeah, that doesn’t sound like jealousy at all.

      • c9castine - Mar 21, 2014 at 11:34 AM

i half agree with the nonsense of pens fans but your wrong in a few things.

scuderi hasnt really been hurt that much. he did break a bone this year but has been back for some time now. the penguins again, are not “horrible defensively” thats just some crap made up by media and stupid fans. they consistently rank top 10 or better in defense.

bylsmas is not terrible his track record speaks for itself.

malkin plays all 3 zones as much as anybody. watch a hockey game. not selfish at all in fact hes being criticized right now for dishing the puck out too much and not being selfish enough and shooting the puck. he has few shots and now only 21 goals.

neal cross check wasnt phantom its just nothing to get your panties twisted up about.

        get lost

  8. restohpens - Mar 21, 2014 at 12:53 AM

What was the official time of possession for the zebras in this game? It seemed like every puck dumped in or slung around the net was in their skates.

Weird game indeed, fun/frustrating. Have to get better.

Also, who is the Red Wings announcer that is constantly laughing to himself, making grunting noises, and talking about headlines from last year?! That guy made me way more frustrated than the game itself.

  9. dtownbeatdown - Mar 21, 2014 at 1:07 AM

The grand rapids griffins are undefeated against the penguins this season…

Great game and great to see the sorry excuses from the pens fans, stay classy.

  10. penzfan329 - Mar 21, 2014 at 1:27 AM

Anyone who chooses malkin or ovi over crosby needs to watch all 3 of them play for a period of time and tell me youd still keep it that way. Crosby is a complete player by a longshot over them. End of story

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Mar 21, 2014 at 3:03 AM

No, Crosby clearly sucks, which is why he has only 91 points so far this season and leads the rest of the NHL by only 15.

    • m1lla7 - Mar 21, 2014 at 3:17 AM

^^^ agreed. I may dislike him but If anyone says Crosby sucks or says they wouldn’t want him on their team is a liar.

      -Wings fan

      • 101starmymedic - Mar 21, 2014 at 9:04 AM

I think Crosby’s talent and skill is completely tarnished by how much of a whiny baby he is. Diving, crying, getting in people’s faces and not backing anything up. He talks more crap than anyone else on the team and never gets put in his place. He’s like that little kid who talks all sorts of smack on the playground and no one will mess with him because his Daddy (Bettman) is the principal and he has 12 big brothers who will come to his rescue.

Talented yes, tactful and mature, absolutely not

He would be the complete package if he had the demeanor of Datsyuk. You never, ever see Dastyuk complain. He just keeps his mouth shut and plays. Crosby needs to do the same.

      • hockey412 - Mar 21, 2014 at 12:00 PM

Given your description of Crosby, Starmy…he sounds a lot like you.

      • 101starmymedic - Mar 21, 2014 at 1:38 PM

Like your comment in response to me talking about Penguins fans earlier? You lost any credibility right there. There was no buzz about the Penguins…they were just a team no one cared about. Now the stadium is packed and people won’t shutup about them. They have Crosby and have actually begun winning so they’re relevant. It’s miraculous, that all this buzz and these fans and sold-out arenas just materialized out of nowhere.

  11. toiletclown - Mar 21, 2014 at 6:43 AM

the penguins are clearly taking it easy on these teams, especially after handing the flygirls 2 wins this past weekend. sid felt bad for girioux crying on camera about the olympic snub. wahhhhh

    • thethorntonstrokes - Mar 21, 2014 at 6:51 AM

The Pens almost had 50 SOG. The Pens “taking it easy” is a load of horse crap

      • hockey412 - Mar 21, 2014 at 8:21 AM

The Pens had 39 regulation time shots, 43 total…your number is a little inflated.

They aren’t taking it easy – they are slumping. Anyone that knows them sees it at least once a year. Not losing every game, but slumping. Not skating well, trying the hard play instead of aggressively driving the net, etc.

Great game by the Wings, all told the play was kind of ugly on both ends, but it was entertaining.

    • laxman1944 - Mar 21, 2014 at 9:22 AM

mmmmmmm…..give the toilet more poop to eat……

So not expecting them to make the playoffs, but the kids are fun to watch in Detroit.

  14. jpelle82 - Mar 21, 2014 at 9:30 AM

you guys can make all the excuses in the world but the pens lost this fair and square. puck luck happens, it just sucks when it goes against you but it is part of hockey…its just rare to see that much of it in one game. credit to the wings for driving the net hard and making it happen, wish the pens did more of that. howard was excellent despite giving up the 4 goals, many of those were not his fault (adams goal and the 5-3 goal especially). also, that first goal by alfredsson was pathetic on the part of the penguins, they didnt deserve to win this game on that play alone…no one should be able to walk in uncontested like that.

  15. slysipops - Mar 21, 2014 at 11:58 AM
