The Ilya Bryzgalov era in Edmonton is about to begin.

According to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, Bryzgalov is set to practice with the Oilers on Monday. His return to Edmonton would come after he played twice over the weekend with the Oilers’ AHL team, the Oklahoma City Barons.

In his two starts with the Barons, Bryzgalov had his ups and downs against Calgary Flames affiliate, Abbotsford. On Friday night, he allowed five goals in 27 shots in a 5-4 loss, but bounced back nicely on Saturday night saving 25 of 26 in a 4-1 win.

Of course, this all comes on the heels of the Oilers snapping out of their own five-game losing streak after beating the Flames 4-2.

Update (3:00 p.m. ET): It’s official, Bryzgalov was called up by the team.

Unless he’s bringing four starting dmen with him I don’t see how his impact will matter.

I’m sure he will be a big boost to the young defensive core when he starts blaming them because he can’t stop a beach ball from crossing the crease. This guy is a cancer to any locker room. Enjoy him and his cry baby antics.

I’m rooting hard for this dude. He’s a fantastic mix of underdog and crazy.

Hmmm. Bob versus Bryz on Tuesday? Who will be more motivated for the win?

    Have fun with that nutjob!

Another brilliant move by Lowe and his cronies, Dubnyck has been playing as well or better than most goalies in the league so lets bring up a psycho and see what we mess up.

Kevin Lowe has got to go

His GAA/ save % last year still was near guys like Ward, Miller, Marty and Quick. Just saying.

I agree that KLowe must go. But @mlhegs who are you watching?

Saying that Dubnyk is “playing as well or better than most goalies in the league” when
his season save percentage is .889, and his backup LaBarbera’s save percentage is a horrendous .858, is just crazy.

This may be the one team in the entire NHL where adding Bryz could HELP the team.

The Flyers problem last year was not Bryzgalov. Anyone who watched the Flyers at all last year knows the defense was the problem. He actually played his but off during the season. Yeah, he is a bit crazy, but what do the Oilers have to lose. As crazy as it sounds, he is probably their best option.
