Toronto newspaper compares Clarkson to Wendel Clark

Jul 6, 2013, 9:24 AM EDT

Many fans in Toronto didn’t go crazy for the big contract the Maple Leafs signed David Clarkson to during yesterday’s first day of free agency. The Toronto Sun, however, couldn’t resist comparing Clarkson to Leafs legend Wendel Clark.

Check out the front page lauding of the signing and the comparisons made between Clarkson and Clark. Also soak in the handlebar mustache and mullet they slapped on Clarkson’s photo to make him look more Wendel-like.

Wendel Clarkson is a pretty great mash-up.

Clarkson’s game is aggressive and he’ll likely blend into Randy Carlyle’s system without a problem. Comparing him to a player that’s so beloved like Clark is, however, just heaps even more pressure on him to perform.

And you thought signing a monster contract would be the part that puts the most pressure to perform. The legend of Wendel is not to be messed with.

As a Devils fan, I’m a big fan of Clarkson and I hope he does well, but I think Toronto fans and media are already putting too high of expectations on him. He definitely fights and has some scoring ability, but likely won’t put up 30 again, he goes through hot stretches and often frustratingly long cold stretches. He’s a very solid player who I’d always love to have on my team, but isn’t a superstar or anything…

The media maybe, the fans – I doubt it. You see, contrary to popular belief, most of us Toronto fans do watch hockey, and some of us can even read and write. lol

Most importantly, who wants to buy an above ground pool in Canada?

    • orangandblack - Jul 6, 2013 at 9:54 AM

At those prices, who could resist?

swadehoo – You must be one of those morons that shows up at the Canadian border in June, with ski’s on your roof, just absolutely shocked that there is no snow to be found eh? By the way, that “eh” was special just for you – lol

Safe to say Leafs fans are the equivalent to NYJ fans

I love Toronto’s sensational headline, “Toronto lands top free agent”. Just because the Maple Laughs over payed for Clarkson that does not make him the top free agent available

    • dueman - Jul 6, 2013 at 2:43 PM

Actually according to every sports analyst out there, Clarkson was the top free agent out there. It’s not that the Leafs over paid for him, which they didn’t. The term was a little to long, but they had to in order to get him signed. If you actually did some reading, you would realize that Clarkson was looking for more, but he really wanted to go to Toronto so he gave some on his price. Good thing for Toronto to, because any team that could afford him were in on trying to sign him, some offering much more money, apparently.

Just bc other teams were offering more doesn’t mean it’s a smart signing. Yes he brings a lot to the Leafs, but 5+mil over 7 years for a player who’s never reached 50pts is a huge overpay. I’ve seen Clarkson play plenty, and he’s a good player, but, in reality, he’s a poor man’s Hartnell. Hartnell (4.75) has six career 20-goal seasons (two 30) and seven 40+pt seasons. Clarkson (5.25) has one 20 goal season (one 30) and has topped 40pts once. And 7yrs is just insane. Not saying Clarkson won’t be a solid contributor but I’d be surprised if he averages more than 17 goals and 32pts over the duration of that contract.

Didn’t this guy suck down the stretch? He started off the season as one of the hottest players and ended up as just another guy.

  8. pastabelly - Jul 6, 2013 at 10:47 AM

Correction, he didn’t suck for the stretch. He scored 10 goals in his first 14 games and scored 5 in the next 34. He sucked most of the season. He’s had three straight years of negative +/-. I’m not suggesting he’s a bad player. He’s a decent player who just got overpaid. Why?

      +- is a stupid statistic

      • sabatimus - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:32 PM

Not when compared to the rest of the players on a given player’s own team. It still isn’t perfect; I wish there were a single stat that could factor in a player’s value at even, shorthanded, and power play.

The Toronto Sun is the biggest joke of a Newspaper yet you guys still continuously put their covers on this site. What you guys have to realize is that NOBODY actually reads the Sun! They put out covers like this just so that people will look at the cover and just consider buying it.

As for Clarkson, nobody is putting this crazy pressure on him, everyone knows that him scoring 30 goals again is likely a stretch, but obviously when you sign a contract like that there will be some increased pressure to perform. Toronto wasn’t the only team that was ready to hand this guy big money, but he was a guy Nonis targeted and wanted to do whatever he had to do to sign him.

Nobody is expecting Clarkson to be Wendel Clark 2.0, but as Clarkson said in his interview yesterday Wendel was the player he idolized growing up. He does have some elements of Wendel to his game, and with him now likely playing with Kadri and Lupul I think it is fair to expect that he will have a decent offensive season while at the same time being an overall tough, gritty guy to play against.

Toronto won’t make the playoffs next season.

  11. youcallthathockeyblog - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Sun media is the biggest joke going in the newspaper circuit. Look no further than the hit on Lars Eller. Or the stupid “Thanks, Love Toronto” when the Hawks won the cup. Stupid articles like this one(PHT) are just their to stoke the anti Toronto sentiment. You guys run every Sun front page like it represents a whole fan base.

I bet 90% minimum are just happy Clarkson fits the system and looks like a good addition though a little expensive. Nobody expects Wendel Clark trust me

Anyone else wondering who Scrawler is?

  13. 19to77 - Jul 6, 2013 at 2:06 PM

And yet the same paper will write about a dozen articles screaming about how terrible and overpaid he is before he gets bought out three years into that awful contract. Sun media is almost the only thing worse than that deal is.
