Video: Lightning win in Cooper’s debut behind the bench

Mar 29, 2013, 11:19 PM EST

The Jon Cooper era in Tampa Bay began with a win for the Lightning.

Tampa Bay’s new head coach made his debut behind the Lightning bench on Friday after being officially hired on Monday, and his players were able to fight back from a two-goal third-period deficit to defeat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in the shootout.

The deciding breakaway competition last only two rounds, with Teddy Purcell and Victor Hedman scoring for the Lightning.

Given how excited Cooper was before the game – “I’m jacked. This is really, really exciting. I’ve got a plan. I’ve done it my way, and here I stand today,” he told NHL.com – he had to like his team’s effort in the third period, after going down by a pair of goals.

Uh-huh, Bylsma also has a loaded roster and hasn’t had to pick up the train wreck left behind from a prior coach. It’s a little easier to coach a team loaded with talent that isn’t falling apart at the seams. This is Cooper’s first game as an NHL coach, give him some credit. The above comment is so ignorant it blows my mind. That being said I have nothing against Bylsma, but to compare Bylsma to a first time NHL coach, who is trying to turn a slumping team around to boot, is anything but a fair comparison. If the Pens tank in the first round, which they are prone to do, history has proven it, you and your Pittsburgh cronies will be the first ones to hang him out to dry and put his head on the chopping block. And if Shero’s trades to pan out you will be quick to do the same to him.

I like the way they battled back, but Tampa Bay would’ve never been down in the first place if it wasn’t for Garon, he allowed at least 2-3 softies. Its time for a NEW GOALIE IN TAMPA BAY!!!!!! Steve Y, Ryan Miller or Luongo would be fine. Thanks!!
