Trade coming? Flames hold Iginla out of action Wednesday

Mar 27, 2013, 7:58 PM EDT

Jarome Iginla AP

The Calgary Flames look like they’re primed to set the Jarome Iginla rumor mill on fire by sitting their captain, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie and Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos.

McKenzie notes that scratching Iginla doesn’t guarantee a trade, noting that Calgary might just be “protecting the asset.”’s Joe Haggerty captures how unlikely it is that most hockey fans – especially Boston Bruins devotees – will heed McKenzie’s advice to avoid getting too excited.

Pretty much.

Haggerty notes two trade-friendly prospects have been scratched in the Bruins’ system: Matt Bartkowski and Alex Khokhlachev. You might remember that Khokhlachev, 19, was floated in a failed bid for Brenden Morrow.

Long story short: stay tuned.

    Well THIS should be interesting…

  3. hockeyflow33 - Mar 27, 2013 at 8:26 PM

I believe Barts was scratched because of a travel issue

  4. stakex - Mar 27, 2013 at 8:30 PM

The Flames wouldn’t scratch Iginla unless something was all but certain to happen. If a deal isn’t announced tonight I would be pretty suprised.

A few years back Bill Guerin was scratched and then the trade fell through. A few days he was scratched again and the trade Penguins. it would be great if it happened tonight just to get it over with. But the only thing him be a healthy scratch tonight means is they have interest in him and don’t want him risking injury.

      • stakex - Mar 27, 2013 at 10:14 PM

I’m sure they have had interest in him since rumors started that he was on the market. and talks have probably been going on for a while now. Considering the Flames want to do right by him, I doubt they would pull him out of the lineup just because theres some interest. There was probably at least some concern that a deal might be struck during the game tonight.

Of course things could fall through. Until its a done deal its not a done deal… but things are almost certainly close.

Maybe they scratched him so he doesn’t get hurt playing a meaningless game.

    • madmax80 - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:17 PM

If that’s the case, the Flames would have scratched him every game this season.

      • vanindeed - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:24 PM

        Another meaningless game.

  6. mpg44 - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:14 PM

Maybe this is all asinine . I mean you play your whole career for one team. You can’t say your surprised by your standings after all these years. Now , in the waning years of your career , you are willing to stab all those loyal fans that stuck up for you all those years in the ” hopes” of a cup. Talk about your bandwagon !! And I will hope that Murphy’s law will kick in for whom ever does get him. According to the experts , Pittsburg or the rangers were supposed to have raised a cup last year…. We all saw just how close they were!!

      You mean like Bourque?

      • mpg44 - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:38 PM

There is no higher display of bandwagoning then this !

    • hockeyflow33 - Mar 27, 2013 at 10:00 PM

What messed up world do you live in?

  7. misterchainbluelightning - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:22 PM

Bartkowski and Khoklachev and Bruins 1st to Calgary for Iggy?

    • nunan - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:28 PM

That’s what I’m thinking..Koko and the 1st pick being the meat of that deal.

      • misterchainbluelightning - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:32 PM

No doubt since Bartkowski isn’t much of a prospect

  8. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Didn’t the Bruins just give Bartkowski a one year contract extension? That could have been done so that Calgary wouldn’t be receiving a potential free agent (restricted I believe) as part of the deal. The pieces seem to fit so we’ll see.

  9. pastabelly - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:45 PM

Koko is a prospect. I’d hate to see him and a #1 go. At least they’re holding on to Subban.

  10. gettingpwned - Mar 27, 2013 at 9:47 PM

Sounds like this is über close to being a done deal. hey mpg, deal with it. Guys get traded. It doesn’t mean he’s stabbing anyone in the back.

    • mpg44 - Mar 27, 2013 at 10:07 PM

No , “getting traded is one thing “approving it ” is totally different. Guy could have been a ledger in the Calgary hockey world for life . Now when people look back , they will see this huge black eye that this ordeal has become. Really don’t care either way , just give any player who plays their whole career on one team way more credit then people like this. It s one thing to make and lead a winning team to a championship . It a whole other thing just riding everyone else coat tails there!

Bernier, Voynov, 2013 first round pick for Iggy and Mikka

    • govtminion - Mar 27, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Sounds great, except for Kiprusoff’s thing about refusing to report if he’s traded.

  12. thehighcountrybear - Mar 27, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Healthy scratch…nothing a little blue ointment can’t fix?

Iggy’s due to land in Boston within the hour, just waiting for traffic over New York Centre to clear…

Should be interesting…Calgary’s loss is Calgary’s gain? Should allow the younger talent in Calgary to blossom with ice time and without need to kowtow to the big ego!

  13. dt58 - Mar 27, 2013 at 10:31 PM

How is this “bandwagoning”? Has he not given his all to that team for his entire career? Have they made an effort to try to win the cup by bringing in anyone to help? It’s called business. The Flames can get players/picks for him and can try and make a run at Lord Stanley. It’s a win for everyone. You ever quit a job to go work somewhere else for more money, better benefits or better working conditions…etc? BANDWAGONER!!!!

Hah, could not have put it better dt58.
