Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson is the NHL’s first star for the month of January, with Sharks forward Patrick Marleau and Sabres forward Thomas Vanek named second and third stars, respectively.

Anderson, 31, has been practically unbeatable in his first six starts, stopping 178 of 184 shots for an NHL-best .967 save percentage and 0.99 goals-against average.

Marleau, 33, ended the month leading the league with nine goals, eight of which were scored in the undefeated Sharks’ first four games.

Vanek, 29, has a league-high 15 points and has registered at least a point in each of the six games he’s played. Twice already he’s had a five-point game, including last night in Boston.

Happy to see Andy doing so well in Ottawa. I was always a fan when he was a Blackhawk coming up through the system. Great guy who is making the most of the deserved opportunity that Ottawa has given him.

Anderson was good (other than that Pitt shootout) but Marleau should have been the #1

Meh.. if it were based on team-value Vanek would be ahead of Marleau. The Sharks at least have other lines contributing in Couture and Havlat.. For Buffalo it’s pretty much been 95% Vanek’s line.

He’s been stellar so far. Tons of respect for the Park Ridge born tender. Hope he keeps it up.

Glad I picked him up in the “scraps” of my fantasy league. I know what’s in front of him, and he has always been skilled. It’s all finally coming together with a defense that lets him see the shots and keeps them at a moderate level.
