TSN’s Darren Dreger is “hearing” Adam Oates is the new head coach of the Washington Capitals. (In which case we’d be shocked if Oates wasn’t the new head coach of the Washington Capitals.)

Oates, the former NHL star that piled up 1,420 points in 1,337 games, has been an assistant coach in Tampa Bay and New Jersey since retiring following the 2003-04 season.

We wonder what the “worst athlete” in DC thinks about this hiring.

More to come.

Update: Nick Kypreos is also reporting Oates as new head coach in Washington.

He’s a real “Maneater”, watching the “One on One” drills will only be watched by “Private Eyes” rumor has it. I wonder if he has a “Kiss on his List” for Ovy? Hopefully he’s not “Out of Touch” to do this without Hull.

      Well done.

      Ha ha…good one.

All that screaming at the referee about the linesman setting the pick for the Kings in game 6 must have been the deciding factor for the Caps.

McPhee got this one right. If anyone can coach that team, it should be Oates. After the work he’s done as a coach the past few years, combined with his understanding of the game (over a point per game = not too shabby)… great choice to work with people like Ovechkin and Backstrom.

As an aside, the Capitals Facebook feed confirms the signing.

Let’s goooo. Favorite player is now the coach! Also an aside, Oates looks just like Ray Liotta from Goodfellas
