Daniel Alfredsson is a beloved figure in Ottawa, there’s no doubt about that. While Alfredsson is busy in Sweden at the moment participating at the World Championships, his fans back in Canada’s capital city are going all out to prove how badly they want their captain back.

Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun tells us about one fan’s effort to try and prove to Alfredsson that Senators fans want at least one more year out of him thanks to an online petition.

One of those behind the movement is Tony Giampietro, who hopes to have 11,000 names accumulated by the time Alfredsson gets back from representing Sweden in Europe.

“We realize and appreciate that Alfie will be the one who makes the ultimate decision on whether to play another season,” said Giampietro. “Our goal is simply to demonstrate to him that Sens fans still believe that he has what it takes to lead us to a championship.”

Giampietro’s site is bringbackalfie.com and it’s noble to see him do this much to help sway Alfredsson’s mind on whether to retire or not. For what it’s worth, Alfredsson has yet to make a decision.

He’s obviously at a point where retirement becomes a daily thought. But he bleeds Sens colors. He came back even though they were supposed to suck this year. He will come back to a team who should make even more noise next year, and they need a veteran leaders help to do so. Alfie gives it one more year for the Sens faithful and himself. I would bet money on it.

As a Leafs fan, he needs to keep playing. Without him we won’t know who to boo when the Sens come to town. His retirement would truly be the end of an era in this rivalry.

Cmon man!!!! Leafs fans always know who to boo. If it isn’t the opponent, it is likely your goalie getting boo’d at home, or your coach. Hahahahaha, just kidding. Sens vs Leafs is awesome. Lupul and Kessel getting boo’d during all star game in Ottawa was hilarious. Sens vs Leafs is awesome. Remember them meeting in the playoffs for nearly 5 years in a row? That was some good stuff.

        Yes, yes I do.

Classy move by Sens fans for a Sens legend. It’s sure nice to have a feel-good story about a classy player as opposed to knuckleheads who miss curfew or choke women on a bender. Thx for the story, PHT.
