Holtby after becoming a father yesterday: “I’m focusing on hockey”

May 11, 2012, 2:28 PM EDT

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 19: Braden Holtby #70 of the Washington Capitals makes a save against the Boston Bruins in Game Four of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals during the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at Verizon Center on April 19, 2012 in Washington, DC. Braden Holtby isn’t worried that becoming a father Thursday will distract him from his duties Saturday at Madison Square Garden when the Capitals and Rangers play Game 7 of their second-round series.

“[Yesterday] was a great day. Mom and baby are doing great, but now I’m focusing on hockey,” said Washington’s rookie goalie. “Circumstances are different, but it’s still the same game. It’s still hockey. The main thing you learn when you turn professional is to separate personal life from hockey, and that’s what we’re gonna do here.”

This sort of stuff is bound to get blown out of proportion. Will he be distracted? Will he be inspired? It can’t be “neither,” because that doesn’t make for a good story.

Who knows though? Maybe he’ll be extra motivated and stand on his head. Or, maybe all the stress will prove to be too much and he’ll fall apart, in which case he can hold it over his kid’s head forever.

He could let in 20 goals on Saturday and still be the MVP of the playoffs for the Caps

He could let in 20 goals on Saturday and still be the MVP of the playoffs for the Caps… and still deserve a spot on this or another team in the NHL… hell… we will take him in SJ for sure.

GM George Mcphee isn’t going to give him up GO CAPS & congrats Holtby on the birth of your son

This kid is the most over- rated player in the league. The Rangers don’t give him any pressure. He couldn’t shine the Kings skates

    • sportsfreak13 - May 11, 2012 at 3:15 PM

I take it you dont think the bruins pressured him at all either then huh? Might be time for you to follow a different sport. Seeing as you dont fully comprehend this one.

    • stevefromsacto - May 11, 2012 at 3:23 PM

      Over-rated, my butt!

Taking a little for granted, aren’t you? Why don’t you get by Mike Smith first before mouthing off?

It’s clear you weren’t watching the Caps/Rangers or Caps/Bruins series. He out-dueled Tim Thomas and is playing Henrik Lundqvist dead even. And coming back to win after two heartbreaking losses in Games 3 and 5? Haven’t seen another goalie in the playoffs do that.

Holtby has played excellent! Anderson stood on his head and Ottawa almost beat the Rangers- now Holtby is at the same precipice. If the Caps were relying on Voukoun, they would have had two weeks on the links already!

I thought the same thing as the B’s series went on but a goaltender who doesn’t make flashy saves, (excluding his weird glove flash), and doesn’t allow bad goals is doing his job.

      • mehetmet - May 11, 2012 at 4:05 PM

well said. Goalies who make the “flashy” saves usually have to make them because they put themselves out of position in the first place.

If you are always in the right place, the flashy save is rarely necessary

    • holtbeast - May 11, 2012 at 6:16 PM

Dude are you retarded? Saying Holtby is the most over-rated player in the league is basically like saying Sean Avery should be the captain of the Rangers. It’s ridiculous. Holtby came in with 14 games in the NHL last season with a 1.79 GAA and 93.40% save percentage and only 7 games played this season (because of the acquisition of Vokoun) with a record of 4-2-1. He had exactly ZERO games of playoff experience before this season, and he’s played more minutes than any other goalie in the playoffs. In the playoffs, he’s got 13 games played and is 7-6, with a 1.95 GAA and 93.5% save percentage. That’s pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

Add in the fact that you don’t see Caps fans bashing Lundqvist (who is admittedly an excellent goaltender) and you look like a total ass. Go model some clothes with Avery.

He can be Speaker of the House

    Holtby’s fiance’s twitter is awesome: http://twitter.com/#!/bbodnar

For example: Brandi Bodnar‏@bbodnar: @Holts170 looks at my cleavage on skype and asks “do you ever find anything in there, like in between the couch?” #thanksbabe

I think it kinda sucks, every tweet has the word preggy in it, got annoying after about 5 tweets and i had to stop reading

  7. dabutcha114 - May 11, 2012 at 5:10 PM

Don’t ever compare Lundqvist to this kid in your life fool. Maybe u havnt been watching the series but he couldn’t make half the saved Henrik made. Maybe u missed the 3 on none Lundqvist stoned. It don’t matter anyway Rangers run away with it in game 7.

    • ravenscaps48 - May 11, 2012 at 8:43 PM

I pray to god that we destroy the Rangers so morons like you can shut your mouths until October

  8. cspsrbums - May 11, 2012 at 5:35 PM

    Dabutcha go away

  9. dawglb - May 11, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Wow! This story/plot cannot get any better. Of all the days to become a Father! The Rangers must get to Holtby early, and get up by 2 goals if they hope to win.

  10. caps247 - May 11, 2012 at 6:09 PM

Atta boy, Holtby! Win game 7 for your son! (I think his name is Benjamin-Hunter)

    • ravenscaps48 - May 11, 2012 at 8:45 PM

Correct. ( Hunter is Braden’s Mom’s Maiden Name… Not earning Brownie Points with the Coach )

  11. caps247 - May 12, 2012 at 12:42 AM

Hendricks is a beast, but Laich should get it because he’s worked so hard ever since he joined the Caps organization.
    Holtby – Laich
