Sean Couturier tells us what it was like to shut down Evgeni Malkin

Apr 22, 2012, 3:49 PM EDT

The work Sean Couturier did in the first round against Penguins superstar forward and probable league MVP Evgeni Malkin was truly something to marvel at. After all, the eighth overall pick in the 2011 draft shouldn’t be the guy that’s able to lock down a guy like Malkin. If anything else he should be intimidated… Right? Not so much as the Flyers finished off the Penguins in Game 6 this afternoon.

Check out Couturier telling NBC’s Brian Engblom what it was like to move out of the first round and handling Evgeni Malkin.

This kid will be a beat for the next decade. His defense is crazy, and he’s just scratches the surface defensively. As is role changes, and he’s matched with better playmakers, he will get better and better

And the kid can be a sniper too. Had some beautiful goals during the regular season, plus that hat trick in this series. Excited to watch him for many more years.

    Agreed, and a class act.

its crazy how good some of these young players for the flyers are. next 3 – 4 yrs we are going to have a very solid team. reed, shenn, couturier, vorachek (spelling). not to mention..the “leaders” of this current team aren’t even that old..grioux, hartnell and others. very good job by the flyers GM after trading richards and carter.

Read, Schenn, Voracek, Giroux (not trying to be a d!ck). Yeah, they were all awesome. With the way other series are going I’m feeling very good going into the next round.

Now all you need is a goalie. Too bad Pronger and Meszaros are both out. You’d be so stacked you might not even need one.

sounds just like the pens a few years back, then key role players like Malone, talbot, gonchar, scuderi, gill, TALBOT, could not be paid what they deserved and pens forced to settle with Paul Martin, joe vitale, mychalek, Adams – salary cap hockey folks – get yours while ya can cause good teams don’t stay together long – wait til you see what kind of money you’re gonna have to pay yours

    • spiffy53 - Apr 22, 2012 at 4:57 PM

not sure the Penguins are the best example of an organization and the handling of the salary cap. you need to determine necessary signings and departures along with being cheap or not understanding player potential.

      • paulsdamnblog - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:35 PM

Great point. Wasn’t Talbot really a victim of uncertainty because of his shoulder? Gill was a rental, that the Pens had no intention of bringing back and there was no way they were going to be able to afford Malone and pay Crosby, Malkin and Fleury.

    • tcclark - Apr 22, 2012 at 5:48 PM

Paul Martin makes 5 million a year and Michalek makes 4 million. Talbot makes 1.9, Scuderi makes 3.4, Gill makes 2.25. It must be tough settling for players who make more money than the players you couldn’t afford.

oh and not to mention, streaky goaltending kills – not too many marty’s out there anymore and they cost money too – didn’t ya pay a ton to your “brick wall” yea, see ya next year, go stillers

    • dsd3 - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:53 PM

Yeah, your elite goalie was really awesome today.

u see, season awards should be finialized at the end of the yr after the playoffs because its during the playoffs where you see the best of the best be all they can be and couty no doubt deserves the rookie of the yr after that series.. but wont get it.. nor matt read who lead all rookies in goals over the yr

    He made it look easy

  9. laurely515 - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:21 PM

Well, at least Malkin doesn’t have to worry about facing Couturier in the World Championships. He’s gotta be pretty pumped about that.
