Friedman: Carter’s reputation hurting his trade value

Had a good email conversation last week with one of Jeff Carter‘s defenders. He pointed out that Carter is still very hurt by how he feels the Flyers misled him, and this is still a 40-goal talent. Totally fair; being traded can be devastating for a young player. But, there comes a point where you have to say, “All right. It happened and now I’ve got to move on.” Carter’s rep is taking a huge hit. At least one team has backed off because of what they’re hearing. If he wants to leave Columbus, he’s got to give other teams an incentive to take that 10-year commitment.

Nobody should be surprised to learn Carter is still upset over being traded – not only did he love it in Philly, the Blue Jackets are a disaster. What’s news is that a team has “backed off because of what they’re hearing” about him.

Regardless, I refuse to believe he’s untradeable. As far as teams that might be willing to roll the dice…

Toronto – Theoretically Carter might not be an ideal center to play with Phil Kessel, as both are known for shooting more than passing. However, to outright dismiss a Lupul-Carter-Kessel combination would be silly. That trio could do some damage.

NY Rangers – Not sure I’d want to mess with my team’s chemistry if I were Glen Sather. Then again, not sure I’d want to go into the playoffs with such a mediocre offense. The Rangers are deep down the middle, but Carter can play the wing.

Los Angeles – We wrote about Dean Lombardi’s quest for scoring earlier today. The Kings don’t have a ton of cap space, but maybe they’d be able to include Dustin Penner, a pending UFA, in the deal to make room.

Ah Jeffery. You are making Homer look smarter day by day.

this team has passed a laughing stock, it is now a pathetic 3 legged dog with cancer. Please but us CBJ fans out of our misery.

It might sound crazy but what about the flames?? Feaster sounds like he’s ready to make a big move

If he was so upset with being traded out of Philly why not let that motivate him to prove Philly wrong. Go out and play unbelievable hockey so that Philly regrets trading him.

Instead he has sulked around and played lazy. He is guaranteed millions over the next 10 years. What a disgrace to the NHL. Its reasons like this that make guaranteed contracts a bad idea.

To give up Jakub Vorecek and a draft pick which ended up being Sean Couturier for this bum is a tragedy. Next time CBJ should do some research and make sure the guy with an 11 year contract isn’t a cry baby who gets his feelings hurt if he is traded.

No way, Paul Holmgren knew what he was doing. Jeff Carter was a slouch on the Flyers and anyone who watched multiple games knew it. He didnt even look like he wanted to play when he was in philly. I would love to hug Paul for getting rid of him and picking up Ginger Beard Voracek and Couturier.

Couldn’t agree more. Cartsey would put together a stretch of games where his stick could carry the team, then come up dry when you really needed him. He’s a non-factor in the playoffs, shrinking to most challenges, and has had a lot of injuries that make depending on him very hard. Homer flat out robbed the Blue Jackets!

If this isn’t in the top 10 worst trades in sports history, it’s pretty close to getting a spot on there. Sorry Columbus, you guys got robbed big time.

Jason you need to let this go, this site is becoming close the the Bleacher Report with the “based on no fact” and completely ludicrous ideas and then throw teams up there as possibilities.

Same teams listed as usual too, Toronto, LA & Rangers

“I refuse to believe he’s untradeable” – Pure Foolishness
Your credibility is fading FAST Jason

One bad season and a long contract does not make Jeff Carter untradeable.

      • phillyphever - Feb 7, 2012 at 8:34 PM

One bad season and one bad contract does though.

      • eastcoastcynic - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:41 PM

An sulking oft-injured underachieving player with a long contract is pretty untradeable.

      • yettyskills - Feb 8, 2012 at 4:09 AM

1 bad season? Guy has one, count em ONE season over 66 points

        LOL 1 bad season

        47 playoff games
        13 goals
        8 assists
        And -9?

For 5 million per until 2021-2022

Completely untradeable and these articles trying to sell the idea that he might get traded are ignorant and should be embarrassing. A better article would be “how stupid of a GM would have to be to trade for Jeff Carter?”

It makes me think that the writer does not understand or has a child-like understanding of hockey.

Oh and Carter has a history of injuries.

    • yettyskills - Feb 8, 2012 at 4:11 AM

Oh and he is a borderline drunk and coke head.

Carts, as a longtime diehard Flyers fan I have seen this organization screw guys over left and right i have heard stories from a one time next door neighbor of mine growin up in avalon former flyer named Tim Kerr and how much of ass bobby clarke is and so on.. however when you were traded i was deeply dissapointed but ive been around a few parties in which you and richie were having a blast in Sea Isle, and when i heard about you guys blowing enuff coke up ur nose that woulda made tony montana proud, i knew the writing was on the wall for both of you sooner or later i was hopin sooner youd snap out of it and grow up..theres no harm in partyin now and again but your a professional hockey player, act like one! Im pullin for u but ur making holmgren look like einstein.. get your head out of ur ass and just do what u do best play hockey score goals and stick it out in CBJ and show their fans the phenomenal player we flyers fans know u to be..

As a die hard flyers fan you’ve seen the organization screw guys over left and right? Please… those players you feel were screwed over. Don’t start with Lindros because he did that to himself with his mommy and daddy.

Carter is the biggest joke in the NHL. The only reason he put up good numbers in Philly was because of his line mates. Most of his goals were pure luck, sitting in front of the net, and any shot he took usually went high and wide. His attitude is atrocious, and any team who takes him is stupid. Sorry Columbus! You got robbed…but you can have Voracek back
