Burke says Hartley will be back, thinks Torts should ‘keep his mouth shut’

Apr 14, 2014, 5:20 PM EDT

Bob Hartley will be back as head coach of the Flames next season.

Via the Calgary Sun’s Eric Francis, acting general manager Brian Burke confirmed Hartley’s job security, while also taking a shot at Hartley’s coaching nemesis in Vancouver:

On Sunday, Tortorella called it “embarrassing” to coach against Hartley — “Some of the things that went on when [Daniel Sedin] was hurt, it’s embarrassing.”

He added: “I am not going to go any further. I don’t like the way he does business. I don’t like him.”

It wasn’t the first time Tortorella has been angry with Hartley…

Brian Burke is 100% correct. Now cue Joey to get on his soapbox about something and then cut and paste some comment from 3 months ago to somehow argue that he’s right about everything.

  2. patthehockeyfan - Apr 14, 2014 at 5:36 PM

I don’t care where Torts coaches next year. Wherever it is, I hope he cleans Burke’s clock once and for all. Burke is an embarrassment.

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Apr 14, 2014 at 5:47 PM

He tried that this year and immediately lost the locker room when his players realized how embarrassing he was. If Tortorella is fired by the Canucks it’s going to be a few years before he’s back in the NHL and he can look directly at January 18th, 2014 if he ever wonders why.

    • dueman - Apr 14, 2014 at 5:57 PM

Ya, how dare that Burke guy defend Hartley! Who the heck does he think he is, the Flames President or something….

    • mackattack29 - Apr 14, 2014 at 7:16 PM

Lol I can’t like this enough times… Burke is just the worst part of hockey. So is hartley. Look up what some of his former players said about him in the past. Nobody likes the guy wherever he goes. Except for an ass like burke…

      • atwatercrushesokoye - Apr 14, 2014 at 8:14 PM

You could say the same about Tortorella

  3. thesportsjudge - Apr 14, 2014 at 5:38 PM

Don’t forget someone will add about truculent.

  4. sabatimus - Apr 14, 2014 at 5:41 PM

Tortellini couldn’t keep his mouth shut if Agent Smith removed it for him.

  5. mackstrong2013 - Apr 14, 2014 at 5:50 PM

Burke is a bloated, red faced muppet. Torts expressed his opinion, now fatty is expressing his. The world keeps turning.

    • sabatimus - Apr 14, 2014 at 6:07 PM

Why so occupied with overweight people?

      • mackstrong2013 - Apr 14, 2014 at 6:23 PM

A fat guy killed my parents, now I roam the lands exacting revenge

      • kaptaanamerica - Apr 14, 2014 at 8:08 PM

lols, hahaha, lols – nice comeback… suck on that one eh sabatimus?

    • canucks30 - Apr 14, 2014 at 6:47 PM

      Batman, is that you?

    • esracerx46 - Apr 14, 2014 at 7:32 PM

Fatty? You know jay feaster isn’t there right? Now, I’m hoping I don’t get sued by Brian Burke for saying this, but he looks like an alcoholic. Idk if its the hair, or the red face, or the irritability or what. With that said. I can’t say I disagree. John Tortorella should work about his team and himself. And possibly get a résumé together. Not that anyone would hire him. Torts, quit pointing the finger at management and your players. Your system didn’t work. Try molding your system to your players. Not the other way around.

burke’s biggest sin is his unerring capacity to call it like it is

he’s refreshing in a way that tortorella is refreshing … men with feelings far removed from the canned nonsense you get from management stooges blotting the league, corporate yes men all

i like burke and tortorella and i like their fire and heart …

tortorella will land on his feet but not before taking his yacht up and down the west coast a few times over a few seasons … all at the expense of family aquilini and canucks fans who’ll carry the can for it all in the end …

    does it get any better

as for getting hartley … i guess bob was just going to lay back and take whatever john had to throw were he unlucky enough to get past mcgrattan, who himself held tortorella off with one hand, such was the extent of rage at play … good theatre all the same

had tortorella entered flames’s room he’d of left in a body bag

    • edog9897 - Apr 14, 2014 at 6:20 PM

If torts even spat on bobby, grats wouldve put him 6 feet under, believe that! On a side note, god damn is grats wife ever fine!

    • mackattack29 - Apr 14, 2014 at 7:18 PM

Hahahhaha hartley was so scared. I agree it was great theater as hartley played the part of the scared little girl running away from the monster. Lol flamers wouldn’t have been able to do anything about it. Bunch of goons with nothing to back it up. Luke Gazdic destroyed Westgarth which was as you say.. another bit if great theater in the flamers organization. Lol

      • harpdog - Apr 15, 2014 at 2:47 PM

that’s funny and true. Harley Starts it and then won’t back it up. Put them in a mma octagon and let them go at it for charity. I bet Hartley would refuse and Torts would be all for it.

I am hoping Burke is giving No Nuts Hartley the confidence like he gave Jay Feaster the week or so before he fired him. I am hoping that Burke will be fired from the Flames in the next while. He is a blowhard and a big wind tunnel. Follow his selflife and he doesn.t last. Goodbye Burke. Burke just rolls in at the most opportune times and makes like he knows what he is doing. He never gets a job with a team at the top because he can.t do anything with them. He picks the bottom feeders and there is only one way to go and that’s to get better. So he can brag on how good he is. GFYS Burkie.

rarely are teams at the top in the market for new personnel unless someone is moving to improve a career, much as jim nill did when leaving detroit for dallas

vancouver on the other hand … can you spell

    • bigoldorcafromvan - Apr 14, 2014 at 10:12 PM

Thanks for the imput muckie. But Burkie is a microphone junkie and he is allways looking for one to spout off. Sometimes he is right and sometimes he is wrong. Keep me posted he will be fired shortly ..I hope.

You gotta love this. I feel like Oliver Twist. More please.

  11. muckleflugga - Apr 14, 2014 at 7:30 PM

check this out … hartley’s small but tough … look how easily he can sling thirty five pounds over his head

  12. luz56 - Apr 14, 2014 at 7:36 PM

This is about Burke telling Tortorella in a round about way you may not have a job John so shut your pie hole.. It isn’t about who is tougher… Calgary played above expectations and kudos to the coach… Vancouver played below expectations and that us also on the coach

  13. stcrowe - Apr 14, 2014 at 7:36 PM

Brian Burke thinks that somebody else needs to shut up? Pot, meet kettle.

    • hallforpresident - Apr 14, 2014 at 11:16 PM

      Beat me to it.

  14. slysipops - Apr 15, 2014 at 11:41 AM

DON CHERRY made a great statement about TORTS on hockey night sat. he said TORTS should keep all of his facial expressions about his team out of the public, and keep all of those type of things behind closed doors. i agree, i have never heard a successful coach knock his players publicly. some players do the same kind of crap ! used to be an old expression : if you don’t have anything good to say about somebody, don’t say anything ….. character can’t be faked, either you have it or you don’t

    • patthehockeyfan - Apr 15, 2014 at 12:36 PM

“if you don’t have anything good to say about somebody, don’t say anything”

Then, what would we PHT commenters comment about?

  15. mattdaddy7 - Apr 15, 2014 at 11:47 AM

    Hey Tortellini…’Shut yer yap!’

  16. harpdog - Apr 15, 2014 at 3:03 PM

Burke has brought down, Vancouver, Toronto and now Calgary. He won a cup with the Ducks with a team he did not build. He made great trades like Phil Kessel for draft picks who were Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton and Jared Knight. He helped Boston win the Cup and build a future for them. He is loyal. Ron Wilson, Dave Nonis and Hartley all have jobs because of them but none have anything to show for it.
Burke should go back to being an agent so he can ruin just a couple players instead of a teams worth.
