Rising Stars cream crumbling Capitals 5-0

Heading into Tuesday’s game, the Dallas Stars and Washington Capitals seemed to hold a decent number of things in common, most notably the fact that both headed into the contest ranked ninth in their respective conferences. Tuesday’s 5-0 Stars win makes a compelling argument that they’re going in very different directions, however.

Stars rise

For at least a brief period of time, Dallas moves to eighth place in the West, although the Phoenix Coyotes can move right back ahead of them by beating the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.

Even so, the Stars hold a game in hand once tonight’s games wrap up and are generally putting themselves in a solid position to make this season’s regular season finale against Phoenix a match for a playoff spot.

The Stars are currently on a three-game winning streak and five of their last six games, beginning an interesting five-game road trip with two victories.

Caps collapse

While the Stars get things together, the Capitals are falling apart. They’ve lost four games in a row and five of their last six games. The one bright side is that they were at least taking some points out of this tough stretch; four of their six games went to shootouts, although Washington only won one of them.

It might be tough for Caps fans to find bright sides (whether it’s fair to pin it on him or not, Alex Ovechkin‘s oft-mentioned plus/minus sank to -36), but at least they get what could be a breather.

After facing tough Western Conference opponents and the Boston Bruins since March 18, they get a couple East opponents, although they play the next four games on the road. Assuming the margins aren’t too large for both teams, Friday’s road game against the Devils could be a make-or-break contest for the Capitals.

Then again, at this point, every game probably feels at least a little bit like that … and it’s mostly been cracks forming for the Caps lately.

Just no effort from the Caps tonight… It really felt, watching this one (or anyway as long as I could stand watching), like they were skating on a Slurpee in a way, like they were in slow motion most of the night. They didn’t seem to challenge the Stars much in any facet of the game, and didn’t seem like they were bothered by that. One can’t help but feel like the Caps threw in the towel on the season with their lack of effort tonight- just a dismal performance.

This team lacks everything. Their fundamentals are terrible. Let’s make a list, shall we?:

      They don’t skate.
      They don’t pass well.
They don’t enter the zones well.
They get beaten about ten times a game springing odd man breaks.
They have no passion or intensity
      They don’t hit.
They don’t skate TO the puck
      They don’t screen the goalie
      They have no heart
      They have no chemistry
      They have no coaching
      They have no leadership
      They have no management
      They SUCK!!!

And Ted Leonsis has the BALLS to raise season ticket prices 13….. 13 PERCENT NEXT SEASON?!?!?!

      • goodellisruiningtheleague - Apr 2, 2014 at 8:35 AM

too bad Baltimore doesn’t have a hockey team

      • hawksnation91 - Apr 2, 2014 at 12:45 PM

They can set up Ovechkin for one-time bombs on the power play.

    • selldannysell - Apr 1, 2014 at 10:21 PM

It’s not like it was a huge game or anything.

    Adam Oates needs to go.

    • selldannysell - Apr 1, 2014 at 10:21 PM

      I’d start with McPhee first!

What a pathetic organization and a rotten, blighted city.

    • trbowman - Apr 1, 2014 at 10:09 PM

The stink of Congress has permeated the phonebooth.

    • 1cupin70years - Apr 1, 2014 at 10:24 PM

Yet you can’t stay away. Check your own insecurities and get over it already.

      • fivetozeroingame7 - Apr 1, 2014 at 10:55 PM

        Minus 36

    • govtminion - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:32 PM

Jokes about Congress and the Caps aside, if you think this is a rotten city, you don’t live here.

Not making the play-offs, and a total retooling from the front of the house down is just what this franchise needs. Fresh start next season from top to bottom, a new G.M., a new coach, and a new captain. After, that the first thing a new G.M. is address the gaping hole at the blue line. From there who knows.

  5. trbowman - Apr 1, 2014 at 10:08 PM

    Play Ovechkin with Jay Beagle
Trade for a top six forward and have him trapped on your fourth line

    Lol Caps.

It took this beatdown to finally put Ovechkin and Backstrom on the same line for the 3rd. Seconded the first poster, the lack of compete level for a team supposdely fighting for a playoff spot was absurd. Teams way out of it are playing harder. Team isn’t that good but Oates is clearly in over his head as a head coach.

  6. fivetozeroingame7 - Apr 1, 2014 at 10:15 PM

Shouldn’t the Caps Gm be pissing and moaning about the refs followed by announcing that all of his atrocious players will be back next year?

    • 1cupin70years - Apr 1, 2014 at 10:25 PM

Shouldn’t you move on at some point?

    • jaguar0413 - Apr 2, 2014 at 3:06 AM

Really @fivetozeroingame7? What do you have to be happy about? Glen Sather? That time when you rented half the 1980’s Oilers so you could say that you’ve at least won one cup in the last 70 years? You were the Capitals before the Capitals. Perennially mismanaged and always underperforming. If you were a Pittsburgh or New Jersey fan I might respect you, but Rangers fans are the worst. You gloat with literally no reason to do so. When the Rangers suck where are you? (Hint: watching the Yankees) You enjoy other people’s misery because you can’t face the fact that your own existence as a Rags fan is miserable.

I would rather rewatch last year’s Game 7 every day for the rest of my life than call myself a Rags fan. At least that way I’d have a little self respect.

Have fun blowing it in the playoffs again. At least this year I won’t be watching it.

  7. rsl22 - Apr 2, 2014 at 12:13 AM

An article about Stars crushing Caps, and all comments are in re Caps ineptitude. Caps fans deserve better. A night at Verizon for two costs $300+, and for what? Absurd.

3rd D pairing sucks, OV is somehow useless at even strength, Caps generally suck at even strength, Oates is a tard, and GMGM thinks the Caps have Cup-worthy defenders.

    • jaguar0413 - Apr 2, 2014 at 2:53 AM

Well we can at least be guaranteed they’ll raise ticket prices again next year…and nothing else will change. #wherethehellisted #thanksfornothing

BUT HEY THE REDSKINS SIGNED DESEAN JACKSON! YAY!!!!!!!!! God I hate this city’s sports teams.

    • goodellisruiningtheleague - Apr 2, 2014 at 8:39 AM

$300? I spent around $100 for 2 tickets and 6 beers last night

  8. spytdi - Apr 2, 2014 at 12:31 AM

Let’s go Stars, it’s been awhile since we’ve danced.

    • darksidecowboy - Apr 2, 2014 at 4:29 PM

The dancing shoes are getting shined, but still have some games to go, GO STARS!

  9. coltssteve - Apr 2, 2014 at 7:25 AM

season ticket holders are leaving, as they extended the renewal deadline two or three times throughout March. I punted my tickets, as this team is putrid.

  10. joey4id - Apr 2, 2014 at 8:45 AM

Paging Ovi. Come in Ovi. The team needs “the me” captain to lead them. Where are you? Dead last of the forwards in the league at -36.

The total buyout cost at $46,666,667 will be spread over 14 years. 6.6 million in savings per year from 2014 through 2020 seasons. From 2021 to 2027 it’s a loss of 3.3 million per year.

You can always trade him and hope some GM is on crack when you deal with him, and you convince him to take up a portion of his salary.

Hit the bloody reset button before you bury yourselves even more.

  11. vbcaps - Apr 2, 2014 at 10:21 AM

It’s time to blow this team up, from top to bottom.

Besides backstrom, orlov, kuni (#92), and alzner everyone else can be had for the right price

PS: I think OV looks worn out lately, besides on the power play, he hasnt been an offensive threat in a while and we all know he doesn’t play D

  12. iowa02 - Apr 2, 2014 at 10:28 AM

I watched that game and….wow. I have no horse in that race but watching the Caps play last night gave me more of an appreciation for when Dale Hunter coached them last year. Also, I pulled out the parka and skis because hell did indeed freeze over last night…I agreed with Mike Milbury’s assessment of that game.
