Kuznetsov nets Caps a point, but Kings win in shootout

The narrative flipped a few times between the Washington Capitals and Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

First it seemed like Alex Ovechkin would power Washington to a big win with his two goals. Then it seemed like the Kings would ride a three-goal third-period outburst to a rueful outcome for the Caps. Ultimately, the Kings overcame a late goal by Evgeny Kuznetsov for a 5-4 shootout win.

Caps climb … a bit

Washington finishes with 80 standings points, with the East’s wild card situation seeing all kinds of activity thanks to this loss, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ win against the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs dropping their sixth in a row against the St. Louis Blues. (More on that muddy playoff picture in a future PHT post.)

The Capitals appeared to lose Nicklas Backstrom during the game, which could be an especially big concern now that they’re in every-game-counts mode.

Streaky Kings

With this, the Kings now own a four-game losing streak.

Los Angeles has been interestingly streaky lately. Since Jan. 28, they lost four in a row, won eight straight, dropped three consecutive games and now find themselves on this four-game run. It’s doubtful that they’ll catch the San Jose Sharks or Anaheim Ducks for the first or second spot in the Pacific Division, yet they’re making a compelling case for the Sharks and Ducks to do what they can to avoid a first-round matchup with them.

More on the game

While Ovechkin’s three-point night (he added an assist after those early tallies) seemed like more of the same, the Kings received contributions from players both obvious (Dustin Brown with one goal and one assist) and less expected (Dwight King scores his 14th goal of the season, adds 15th assist).

Curiously, Caps fans took their hats off for Kuznetsov’s first career NHL goal, not his first career hat trick:

It was an odd scene late in that game, as the overtime included some tumultuous moments, including a big collision between Alex Ovechkin and Jack Hillen. Hillen was able to leave the ice under his own power, at least (eventually).

It sucks, we just can’t hold on to leads. At least we were able to salvage a point, but we simply can’t keep letting these 2 goal leads slip by. I also wonder how bad backstrom’s hurt, hopefully he’s alright cause we’re gonna need him these last few games

It isn’t curious why Caps fans took their hats off for Kuzya’s goal, it was because Ovi had the shot from the slot that led to the goal and many Caps fans thought that Ovi’s shot had gone in itself, which would’ve given him 3 goals for the game. But Kuzya collected the rebound with Ovi getting the primary assist.

Aside from that, some notes…I saw some promising signs from the Caps along with more of the same. The 3rd line of Fehr, Ward, and Chimera is simply awesome and brings so much energy every night. Our defense was pretty solid save for a few turnovers that ended up in the back of the net. Mike Green had a very, very good game. Can’t blame Halak for any of the goals. Hillen looks like he may have been concussed in the collision with Ovechkin. Kuzya’s awesome. Lets go Caps.

“the Kings received contributions from players both obvious (Dustin Brown with one goal & one assist)” …

Hopefully this game will have the Brown haters finally ‘zip their traps’ for good eh ? Anyway, it sounded like quite the game featuring a very ‘impressive’ counter attack on our part after falling behind 2-0 in the first. I suppose ‘some’ praise is in order for Ovi with two more goals scored ? Nonetheless, he and the Caps are playing for their playoff lives in front of their own fans, therefore it was a given that this wouldn’t be easy. We on the other hand are already in, even though still have a ways to go before we chase down the Sharks and Ducks.

    GO KINGS GO !!! … TODAY, TOMORROW AND FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

And the winner goes to……. Jeff Carter. TC knew what they were doing when they added to the roster.

I hope Blomfeld chokes on Elvis’ rotting member

Hey, at least he gave Ovi and the Caps some credit for a close game. There’s plenty of times for Caps fans to hate on Blomfeld, but this may not be one of them.

    When Brown and Richards score….

The Kings don’t seem to lose.

Carter and Kopitar have been consistent all year.

With scoring support from Richards..Brown and newly acquired Gaborik.

Kings can make a run again.

They have a mobile defense that can score.

Doughty…Voynov…Muzzin….and Martinez has 10 pts in six games.

Quick had been a GAMER in postseason.

    West is harder then ever!

But Kings are built for playoff grind.

They just dont matchup well with speed of Chicago. ..

    But Game on!

    If tonight balance continues. ..

    Kings are ready.

    • aldog83 - Mar 25, 2014 at 11:11 PM

Correction 10 pts in 12 for Martinez.

The richards takedown the empty net breakaway tonight….

Shouldn’t. That be at least a penalty shot?

      Vs 2 minute minor?

      • blomfeld - Mar 25, 2014 at 11:40 PM

It’s okay friend … Martinez already entered the NHL’s ‘best defense men’ conversation two years ago … :)

      • patthehockeyfan - Mar 26, 2014 at 1:12 PM

The ref said that Richards was taken down from the side, not from behind. The skaters were side-by-side. Hence, 2-minute minor and no penalty shot.

I would beg to differ friend … perhaps you’re not familiar with Aesop’s fable about the tortoise and the hare ?
