It can be rough beingĀ  a goalie in the NHL. Not only is everyone trying to fire pucks at you, but sometimes guys come crashing your net when doing so. Detroit’s Jimmy Howard experienced this first-hand last night when Phoenix’s Eric Belanger had his shot stopped and half the Coyotes team barreled through Howard as…

Nikolai Khabibulin earned yet another save of the night award with a great stop last night.

  4. Save of the night: Niittymaki stones Stamkos on the breakaway

Seen Stamkos? We have, and it came when he was being stoned on a breakaway by Sharks goalie Antero Niittymaki. Steven Stamkos wasn’t shutout all night as he had a goal and an assist in a losing effort in the 5-2 Sharks victory over the Lightning.

There are some moments that are so odd and amazing, you have to wonder if they were at least half-accidental. (A good example is that once-in-a-lifetime goal Alex Ovechkin scored against the Phoenix Coyotes.) This save by Nikolai Khabibulin seems like it ranks in that category. It might not have won the game for the…

  6. Save of the night: Peter Budaj’s diving stick save is one to savor

While the Colorado Avalanche didn’t fare too well getting shutdown by the Vancouver Canucks 3-1, they did have at least one bright spot last night with goaltender Peter Budaj making an incredible diving stick save to stop Mason Raymond from wrapping around for an easy goal. The Avs will need more of that kind of…

  7. Save of the Night – Jonas Gustavsson (November 3)

There were some great saves last night (heck, Chris Mason made 52 saves by himself), but to me it came down to a a great split stop by Miikka Kiprusoff and a 2-on-1 desperation stick save by Jonas Gustavsson. After a considerable amount of deliberation, I decided to give it to Gustavsson, particularly because it…

  8. Save(s) of the night: Carey Price goes wild against Columbus

While the Columbus Blue Jackets were able to shutout the Montreal Canadiens last night 3-0 in a mostly lifeless effort by the Habs, there was one guy who showed up in a big way for Montreal. Goaltender Carey Price did his part to try and keep his team in the game, highlighted by this series…

Don’t forget to vote for last week’s best save. Do so right here. A couple weeks ago, a few skaters (Pascal Dupuis and Radek Martinek) earned save of the night honors by bailing out their goalies with deft stick work or fearless shot blocking. Another skater earned that honor tonight. The New Jersey Devils are…

Note: Don’t forget that you still have time to vote for last week’s best goal here. While I at least try to stay away from choosing shootout goals for these awards, penalty shots are a little different. For one thing, they take place during the actual flow of a game and therefore aren’t involved in…

Peter Budaj helped Avalanche fans to forget about Craig Anderson’s murky injury situation for at least one night, making a few big saves but coming up short in overtime against the Canucks.

The “voter turnout” wasn’t outstanding for the first save of the week poll, but San Jose Sharks goalie Antero Niittymaki won convincingly enough. Check out the results and video by clicking on “read more.”

    niittysave

To celebrate the best moments of each week, we’ll put up a poll to see which goal/save/whatever was the most amazing of a given seven days. We might not always have one per day and sometimes there will be more than seven to choose from, but all you need to do is vote for your…

  15. Save of the Night – October 24 (Antero Niittymaki)

OK, the game was long over and there were more important saves tonight (Henrik Lundqvist made some pivotal stops to keep the New York Rangers ahead of the New Jersey Devils). But sometimes you just have to award style instead substance. This is one of those times: Antero Niittymaki made an impressive splitting save on…

  16. Save of the Night – October 22 (Henrik Karlsson)

    Oct 23, 2010, 11:00 AM EDT

    Comments Off

If real life played out like NHL ’11 or any number of hockey video games, this save might have made someone (definitely not me, though, because I’m super sophisticated and convincingly mature) throw a controller. That’s because skilled Columbus Blue Jackets forward Derick Brassard was all alone in front of rookie Calgary Flames goalie Henrik…

  17. Save and game-winner of the night: Pascal Dupuis and Kris Letang

    Oct 22, 2010, 10:00 AM EDT

We’re doubling our pleasure here because it’s just that good. The save of the night comes from overtime between Pittsburgh and Nashville where Pascal Dupuis bailed out his goalie Marc-Andre Fleury from losing in embarrassing fashion, preventing Cody Franson from stuffing home a loose puck off a J.P. Dumont shot. Shortly after that, Kris Letang…

  18. Save of the Night – October 20 (Marty Turco)

    Oct 21, 2010, 1:00 PM EDT

    Comments Off

OK, I’ll admit that Roberto Luongo definitely deserves consideration for a few of the saves he made last night (particularly stopping a few late shots in the third and a Marian Hossa breakaway in overtime). I’ll also concede that this is a flawed choice since Marty Turco actually received a tripping penalty as a result…

  19. Save of the night: Miikka Kiprusoff saves the night for Calgary

    Oct 20, 2010, 9:00 AM EDT

    Comments Off

Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff was stellar in his 34-save shutout of the Nashville Predators, and his stop in the second period was perhaps the best of the bunch.

  20. Save of the Night: October 18 (Radek Martinek)

    Oct 19, 2010, 10:15 AM EDT

    Comments Off

Who said you need to be a goalie to make the save of the night? OK, technically many people will consider this a blocked shot, but all New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek needed was some goalie pads and an elaborate mask to completely embrace the role of a goalie right here. Dwayne Roloson played…

  21. Save of the Night – October 16 (Ty Conklin)

    Oct 17, 2010, 12:40 PM EDT

Ty Conklin robs Mike Ribeiro of what looks like a certain goal with a stunning save. It might not have won the St. Louis Blues the game (they ended up losing in a shootout), but it allowed them to take a point from the game. Check out that outstanding save after the jump.

  22. Save of the Night: Jaroslav Halak steals one

    Oct 15, 2010, 12:45 PM EDT

This is one of those saves that always mystifies me a bit. It forces me to wonder: “Is it really that great of a save, or was it more about the forward failing to lift the puck ever so slightly?” Eh, either way, it was a pretty entertaining piece of work by Jaroslav Halak. Let’s…
