Are the Stars in a bad position with centerman Brad Richards?

It’s awfully early to go looking ahead towards the off-season at who is going to be an unrestricted free agent, but one of the players that figures to get a lot of attention then if he’s available is Stars forward Brad Richards. Richards is one of the best set-up men in the league, perpetually at…

It’s Monday and you’re already upset about that. Don’t worry, hockey’s here for you after you get out of work.

With just two games, the nightly recap makes for a light bit of reading.

Cam Fowler had a game to remember scoring his first NHL goal. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to stick around to see his team win 3-2 after getting knocked out on his next shift. See the video inside this post.

You think it’s hard to be a backup goalie? How about when you’re backing up Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun who plays all the time? All of a sudden, life seems easy.

In this increasingly fragmented and confusing world – not to mention a fledgling economy – getting a good deal is about more than feeling smart. Sometimes, it’s just a flat-out necessity. Just the other day, I saw the Dallas Stars advertise their delightfully pun-based promotion “Ott-toberfest.” It’s a pretty cool deal, as fans who cash…

I realize that, from a box office standpoint, it makes sense that most NHL teams prefer to play on a Saturday night. It’s the most likely night that people can go out to a hockey game, since they’re off and there’s no work the next day. But from a selfish hockey fan perspective, I wish…

Keith Ballard suffers ‘slight concussion’; ‘No time frame’ for return

Maybe the Vancouver Canucks have some kind of hex on them. Perhaps it’s residual bad karma from the Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore incident. Whatever the case may be, the Canucks blue line is dealing with injury problems yet again this season. New addition Keith Ballard is reportedly suffering from a “slight concussion” after being hit into…

James Wisniewski regrets making obscene gesture toward Sean Avery, ‘hurting’ his team
Oct 17, 2010, 2:36 PM EDT
Honestly, I thought the NHL went overboard in handing New York Islanders defenseman James Wisniewski a two game suspension for making the international gesture for fellatio toward Sean Avery. Sure, it was childish and embarrassing, but isn’t that how you’d describe just about every post-whistle scuffle and bit of trash talking? He simply translated that…

NHL fines Sabres troublemaker Patrick Kaleta for failed headbutt on Travis Zajac

When it comes to pesky players such as Buffalo Sabres pest Patrick Kaleta, there’s a fine line between doing your job (frustrating opponents into penalties) and hurting your own team by taking bad penalties. There are times when such tomfoolery just falls flat on its face, though. Wednesday’s game against the New Jersey Devils provided…

We covered a ton (OK, just 10) of last night’s games, but two of the contests went past our bed times. Let’s recap those late Saturday games for your reading enjoyment. Calgary 5, Edmonton 3 For at least one night, Darryl Sutter’s off-season additions looked like shrewd moves. Alex Tanguay scored the first goal then…

Ty Conklin robs Mike Ribeiro of what looks like a certain goal with a stunning save. It might not have won the St. Louis Blues the game (they ended up losing in a shootout), but it allowed them to take a point from the game. Check out that outstanding save after the jump.

People throw around “Goal of the Year” praise almost like how people call a film that was released in January the movie of the year, but they might just be onto something with this stunning goal by Minnesota Wild defenseman Brent Burns. Check it out after the jump.

We won’t be able to cover the two latest games, but there’s plenty of hockey to go around with 12 games on the docket tonight. Let’s take a look at a busy night in the NHL. Pittsburgh 5, Philadelphia 1 Read all about Brent Johnson and Sidney Crosby’s strong night here. Montreal 4, Ottawa 3…

Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen feels ‘much better’; could be back by Thursday

Good news for the Detroit Red Wings: it sounds like Johan Franzen isn’t too banged up. While the sniping Swedish forward did admit that the Mark Fistric hit left him with a “mild concussion,” Franzen said that he was feeling quite a bit better and it doesn’t appear that he’ll deal with too many issues.…

Tomas Vokoun posts second straight shutout; Strong season could earn him a big deal
Oct 16, 2010, 10:42 PM EDT
Tomas Vokoun earned his second consecutive shutout tonight, keeping the red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning off of the scoreboard in a 6-0 win for the Florida Panthers. Vokoun’s contract will expire after the season, so the question is: can the talented but underrated Czech goalie make enough waves to earn one more big contract?

Brent Johnson is now 3-0 while established starter Marc-Andre Fleury is 0-3 in this early season. Is it too early to wonder if there might be a goalie controversy in the Pittsburgh Penguins net? Read on for more on that and Sidney Crosby’s dominant night.
