Twelve years ago, Martin Brodeur and Scott Gomez won their second Stanley Cup together in New Jersey.

Now, they’re getting back together... in St. Louis.

And the circumstances, aside from locale, are far different than when they were Devils teammates -- Brodeur is now the Blues’ assistant GM, and Gomez, an unrestricted free agent, will participate in St. Louis’ training camp on a professional tryout.

The news, first reported by CBS Radio’s Andy Strickland and later confirmed by the Record’s Tom Gulitti, comes after the 35-year-old Gomez had a solid bounce-back campaign in New Jersey, scoring 34 points in 58 games after starting the year without a contract, signing a one-year pact in December.

Some thought that production would earn Gomez a new contract with the Devils, or perhaps a PTO, but that notion was shot down by new GM Ray Shero earlier this week.

With St. Louis, Gomez will be in tough to land a contract.

The Blues are pretty deep at forward and have a variety of guys that can play center. There’s also been talk of speeding up the youth movement, which means the likes of Robby Fabbri, Ivan Barbashev and Ty Rattie could all be pushed forward -- and if that’s the case, it’s tough to envision a scenario where Gomez, who turns 36 in December, fits into the plan.
