Sergei Plotnikov, signed by the Penguins on Wednesday to a one-year entry-level contract, is leaving a favorable impression on Pittsburgh’s GM Jim Rutherford with some of his recent actions.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Plotnikov could arrive in town by August as he embarks on his career in North America, and getting in a little early before training camp is just one example. The other appears to be a little more of a hit to the wallet for the 25-year-old Russian forward.

From the Tribune-Review:

“Without us asking, he’s already talking about getting over here early,” Rutherford said. “Some of the things he’s done speak volumes of his character.”

For example, Rutherford said, Plotnikov, 25, footed the $500,000 bill to terminate his Kontinental Hockey League contract.

“Not many guys would do that,” Rutherford said.

Plotnikov has spent the last six seasons in the KHL, recording a career-high 36 points in 56 games with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv last season.
