Report: Sharks to name DeBoer head coach

Los Angeles Kings v New Jersey Devils - Game One

Pete DeBoer will be the next head coach of the San Jose Sharks, a source tells ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun.

The announcement will be made before the end of the week, reports LeBrun.

DeBoer was fired by the New Jersey Devils in December, after the club started the season 12-17-7. He led the Devils to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011-12, his first season behind their bench, but failed to get them back to the playoffs the following two campaigns.

For most of his time in New Jersey, the Devils were a strong possession team that routinely outshot its opponents. Following the lockout-shortened 2013 season, he said he felt the Devils deserved better than to miss the playoffs.

In San Jose, DeBoer will be tasked with replacing highly regarded Todd McLellan, while taking over a team that missed the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

This will be DeBoer’s third head-coaching job in the NHL. He also coached the Florida Panthers for three seasons, from 2008-11.
