The Los Angeles Kings weren’t able to make the playoffs this season despite being the defending Stanley Cup champions, but their AHL squad has been very successful in their place.

The Manchester Monarchs earned a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack in Game 4 of Eastern Conference Final tonight. That completed Manchester’s sweep, setting the stage for the Monarchs to play either the Grand Rapids Griffins or Utica Comets in the Calder Cup Final.

This will be the Monarchs’ first appearance in the championship round. They led the AHL with a 50-17-6-3 record in the regular season.

Jordan Weal, 23, has been leading the charge for the Kings’ affiliate with 10 goals and 19 points in 14 playoff games. Michael Mersch, 22, isn’t far behind with 11 goals and 18 points.

Adrian Kempe accounted for the series-winning goal tonight. Nic Dowd and Brian O’Neill also scored for Manchester.
