Isles sign Quebec league tough guy Johnston

Johnston

The New York Islanders have signed undrafted free agent Ross Johnston out of QMJHL Charlottetown, the club announced on Tuesday.

Johnston, 21, is a big guy -- listed at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds -- and was a frequent visitor to the sin bin over his last two seasons in the Q, racking up 263 penalty minutes in 104 games.

Johnston also received a fair bit of notoriety during the 2012-13 campaign, when he was suspended 15 games for breaking the jaw of an opponent in an ugly stick-swinging incident.

This past season represented a shift in Johnston’s game, however, as he scored a career-high 18 goals and 32 points in 44 games, then added four points in just three playoff appearances. He also served as Charlottetown’s assistant captain, and participated in the Isles’ rookie camp last summer.
