Chicago has landed one of this year’s prized college free agents.

Colgate forward Kyle Baun -- the grandson of legendary Maple Leafs defenseman Bobby Baun -- has agreed to join the ‘Hawks, agent Brian Bartlett confirmed on Thursday.

Baun, 22, had 14 goals and 29 points in 38 games this season, his third at the NCAA level. He has good size (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) and strong offensive ability, which is why a number of teams expressed interest -- Detroit, Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton were all courting, per TSN.

Chicago ended up the landing spot, however, and it sounds as though Baun will soon make his NHL debut as he’ll report immediately to the Hawks and, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, play some games this year. It’s not unlike what Chicago did with 2013 Hobey Baker winner Drew LeBlanc, who signed with the ‘Hawks shortly after capturing the award and went on to appear in two games for the ‘Hawks before going to AHL Rockford.

It is worth noting, however, that Baun won’t be eligible to participate in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.
