The New York Islanders added some goaltending depth on Wednesday, agreeing to terms on an AHL deal with Ferris State senior and collegiate free agent C.J. Motte.
Motte, 23, spent the last four years at Ferris and leaves as the school’s all-time wins leader, with 66. A two-time Richter Award and 2013-14 Hobey Baker Award finalist, Motte posted a .922 save percentage and a 2.07 goals against average as a senior this year, and also became the first goalie in school history to serve as team captain.
Motte looks as though he’ll be in line for some immediate time with the Isles’ affiliate in Bridgeport. In a corresponding move, the club sent another goalie -- Kent Simpson -- to the Stockton Thunder of the East Coast Hockey League, leaving just Motte and Kevin Poulin to tend goal in the American League.
