Los Angeles defenseman Slava Voynoy’s domestic assault trial has been continued until April 21st, according to lawyer Craig Renetzky:

Voynov case has been continued. The next court date will be April 1st for motions. Jury selection is scheduled for Aprill 21

Voynov lawyer @losangeleslegal told me that trial start delayed to April 21 by “mutual agreement.” No major reason it seems

Voynov, who was originally supposed to go to trial on Mar. 2, has seen his case twice continued; the first time, it was pushed back to Mar. 9 and now, it’s scheduled to begin at the end of April -- which is a key date for the Kings.

L.A. faced a potential salary cap quagmire regarding Voynoy’s $4.1 million hit; while it is currently receiving financial relief with Voynov suspended indefinitely, there was no clear picture as to what would happen if Voynov went to trial and was cleared of charges.

Just prior to Monday’s trade deadline, the Kings acquired defenseman Andrej Sekera -- and his $2.75M cap hit -- from Carolina, a move that was only made possible because Voynov was off the books.

L.A. GM Dean Lombardi addressed the potential issue his club would’ve had if Voynov was reinstated prior to the end of the regular season.
“There are a number of moving parts that we’ve kind of looked at,” he said, per the New York Times. “Our formulas on the board look like they are from a physics project.”

But now, with the Voynov trial set for Apr. 21 and the end of the NHL regular season on Apr. 11, the Kings won’t be affected (barring Voynov making a plea deal which, per the O.C. Register, is “highly, highly unexpected.”)

It’s also worth noting the issue wouldn’t affect L.A. in the postseason either, as salary cap constraints don’t apply in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
