Nathan MacKinnon’s disappointing sophomore campaign has ended with a thud.

On Friday, the Avs announced that MacKinnon, the reigning Calder Trophy winner, will miss the remainder of the regular season with a broken foot.

The 19-year-old will finish this season with 14 goals and 38 points in 64 games, off the impressive pace he set as a rookie -- MacKinnon finished his freshman campaign with 24 goals and 63 points in 82 games, and added another 10 points in Colorado’s opening-round playoff loss to Minnesota.

It’s unclear exactly when or how MacKinnon broke his foot. He played plenty in Colorado’s 3-1 win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, scoring what proved to be the eventual game-winner while getting 19:35 TOI. He did block a Daniel Winnik shot in the third period.

With MacKinnon out, Colorado’s already difficult playoff chase gets that much tougher. The Avs currently sit nine points back of Winnipeg for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.
