Video: New-look Blackhawks steamroll Hurricanes

Carolina Hurricanes v Chicago Blackhawks

Carolina Hurricanes v Chicago Blackhawks

Jonathan Daniel

Even after making big investments for reinforcements, the Chicago Blackhawks likely still feel a little shaken up without Patrick Kane ... but hey, they still have a healthy Jonathan Toews.

Their captain scored the first two goals (and later added an assist) as they cruised to a 5-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

The Blackhawks showed off their still-deep offensive attack, as Brandon Saad and Marian Hossa scored their 20th and 18th goals of the season respectively (Marcus Kruger also broke a scoring slump with his sixth).

The game was essentially over in the third period, when Carolina scored its two goals. The only moment of real concern came when Corey Crawford was slow to get to his feet late in the contest, but he finished out the night for his 25th win of the season.

Neither newcomer scored a point, but Kimmo Timonen and Antoine Vermette got their feet wet in their debuts with Chicago.

Despite a -1 rating, Timonen seemed to fit in quite nicely for a 39-year-old who’s dealing with career-threatening blood clot issues. He logged 17:29 TOI and may have been OK for more if it wasn’t such a lopsided game. Either way, Chicago has to be happy about its investment so far (though it’s obviously very early).

Vermette was quieter in his first game, only receiving 12:55 of ice time.

Beating up on a deflated Eastern Conference afterthought doesn’t prove a whole lot, but the Blackhawks at least looked dangerous in their first game after the trade deadline.
