The Anaheim Ducks were “adamant” about trying to add another defenseman. And today, they did just that, acquiring veteran James Wisniewski, along with a third-round draft pick, from Columbus for a second-round pick and forwards William Karlsson and Rene Bourque.

Wisniewski, a former Duck, was reportedly being shopped by the Blue Jackets in the weeks leading up to today’s deadline. The 31-year-old has eight goals and 21 assists in 56 games this season, with 14 of his points (7G, 7A) coming on the power play.

The deal allows the budget-conscious Jackets to shed themselves of Wisniewski’s contract, which runs through 2016-17 for a cap hit of $5.5 million.

Karlsson is a 22-year-old prospect who’s played just 18 games in the NHL. He was the 53rd overall pick in the 2011 draft.

The Ducks made another trade earlier in the day, sending veteran d-man Ben Lovejoy to Pittsburgh for 23-year-old blue-liner Simon Despres.

They’ve also reportedly acquired depth defenseman Korbinian Holzer from Toronto.

Update 2:

The Holzer deal sees him go from Toronto to Anaheim in exchange for veteran defenseman Eric Brewer. The Ducks also sent a fifth-round pick to the Leafs in the trade.
