Wild beat Avs, dying seconds fight set stage for rematch

The Minnesota Wild stayed hot with a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, but they weren’t entirely happy after this one.

With mere seconds left in the contest, Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod fought Charlie Coyle and after the spirited exchange, McLeod was handed two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct, five for fighting, and a misconduct. Minnesota and Colorado’s benches then broke into a shouting match and Gabriel Landeskog was booted from the contest after leaning into the gap between the benches.

“That’s garbage,” Wild coach Mike Yeo said of McLeod’s actions, per the Star Tribune’s Michael Russo. On the subject of Avalanche coach Patrick Roy putting McLeod, who now has nine points and 167 penalty minutes in 63 games, out in the final seconds of play, Yeo added, “We’ve seen the league respond (to things like that in the past).”

That wasn’t the only controversy McLeod was involved in during this contest though. Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk, who stopped 33 of 34 shots, seems to believe that there should have been an interference call on the one goal allowed.

“I guess McLeod had nothing to do with me going into the net, which is somewhat mind-boggling,” Dubnyk argued.

The Avalanche have now lost four games against Minnesota this season, but they’ll have one more shot at them on March 8. Given how this game ended, we might be in for a heated rematch.
