Chicago and Toronto flipped AHLers on Thursday, with the Leafs sending winger Spencer Abbott to the ‘Hawks in exchange for defenseman T.J. Brennan -- a player the Leafs are quite familiar with.

Brennan, 25, spent one year in Toronto, all of it with the AHL Marlies, where he tore up the American League by scoring 25 goals and 72 points in 76 games (and another 14 points in 14 playoff games.) He went on to capture the 2014 Eddie Shore Award for most outstanding AHL defenseman, and was named to league’s First All-Star Team.

After that breakout campaign, Brennan signed a one-year deal with the Islanders, but never debuted for the club as he was flipped to Chicago in October as part of the Nick Leddy trade. He’s since spent all of this year in AHL Rockford.

Brennan does have NHL experience, however, appearing in 40 games for Buffalo and Florida.

Abbott, meanwhile, played his first and only NHL game with the Leafs last season. The 26-year-old has spent almost all of his professional career with the Marlies, and has seven goals and 24 points in 46 games this year.

The Leafs have announced that Brennan will report to the Marlies.
