The Detroit Red Wings snapped a three-game winless skid with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday night.

Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar found the back of the net in the shootout while Jimmy Howard made 32 saves for the win. The victory is Howard’s first since Jan. 6 in Edmonton.

“It’s huge,” Howard said. “Giving away points the other night against Winnipeg and then losing a hard fought game against Montreal can get you upset a little bit, but starting off the road trip with two points is a good feeling. Now we can enjoy it for a couple days and get ready for Dallas because this road trip is going to get a lot harder.”

Jonathan Toews was the lone Blackhawk to beat Howard in the shootout. Chicago falls to 7-3 in the breakaway competition. They’re now 2-0-3 through the first five games of an eight-game home stand.

“Shootout is like roulette. You never know,” Tatar said. “We don’t have really good stats this year, but we are glad we beat this team in the shootout. [They] are really successful and it’s a big win for us.”

Corey Crawford made 26 saves in the loss.

Tatar opened the scoring at 16:10 of the second period. After Brandon Saad tied it 1-1, Darren Helm gave the Wings a 2-1 lead at 17:54 of the third.

Kris Versteeg tied it 2-2 with just 1:23 remaining to force overtime.

“I think it was an all-around great effort,” said Versteeg. “Sometimes you lose in the shootout. That’s just the way it is.”

Added Patrick Kane: “If you play that way, more often than not you’re going to come out with a couple of goals, especially with our team.”

Chicago continues its home stand Friday night when the Colorado Avalanche visit.

The Red Wings visit Dallas Saturday night in the second game of a six-game road trip.
