Have the Toronto Maple Leafs hit rock bottom? Who knows. This could get much worse before it gets better. They’re now seven points out of the final Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference.

On Saturday, the Leafs were shut out on the road against the St. Louis Blues. As for this four-game road trip, well, they scored one goal. No surprise they came away with four straight losses, which included getting swept out of California.

This on top of a recent coaching change and plenty of questions and rumors surrounding star players like Phil Kessel and the leaders like Dion Phaneuf. This most recent result meant a more emotional Phaneuf with the media afterward.

“What’s the morale?” Phaneuf told the Toronto Sun. “It feels awful. Absolutely terrible. I don’t know what more I can say that when you lose games, when you go through stretches like this, it is awful.

“The bottom line is we went on a road trip and we are going home 0-4. I don’t think there is much more to sugarcoat it. It’s unacceptable.

“We are close, but close does not count in professional sport. This trip was extremely disappointing for our team. There is no other way to put it.”
