‘I’ve never made a call to another team on Tyler Myers,’ says Sabres GM

It’s been said a number of NHL teams want Tyler Myers.

One of those teams, apparently, is his own.

“I’ve never made a call to another team on Tyler Myers,” Buffalo GM Tim Murray explained, per NHL.com. “I’ve had some calls, and I think it’s kind of a domino effect where one or two teams see in other press, not Buffalo press, and called asking if it was true.

“I have not tried to trade this guy.”

Myers, the subject of trade rumors for quite some time, resurfaced at the start of the campaign when TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Detroit “and perhaps Anaheim” were inquiring about the 6-foot-8 rearguard. It’s not surprising teams were making calls; at 24, Myers is showing signs of rebounding after a tough couple years and has a pretty reasonable contract, with a $5.5M cap hit through 2018.

This year, Myers leads the Sabres in ice time per game (25:11) and has eight points in 35 games.

Murray seems keenly aware of Myers’ value. While Buffalo’s in the midst of a rebuild, the organizational belief is that Myers has more value as a core player rather than trade asset -- “He can do a lot of things that a lot of people can’t do,” Murray explained -- and therefore won’t be shopping him at the deadline, or beyond.

That said, Murray was cognizant of the fact circumstances could change, especially if the right deal comes along.

“Some teams have asked about availability,” he said. “I’ve plainly said, ‘I’m not trying to trade the guy, if you want to knock my socks off with an offer I’ll listen,’ but it would have to be a major, major trade for me to move this guy.

“I’m not pursuing that.”
