Eichel highlights nominee list as Hobey Baker voting opens

Fan voting is open for the 2015 Hobey Baker Award -- given annually to the top collegiate player in the country -- and, to nobody’s surprise, Jack Eichel is among the nominees.

Eichel, the Boston University freshman that leads the nation in scoring (27 points in 16 games), headlines a list of 59 players up for the award; he’s looking to become just the third BU player to ever capture the trophy (Chris Drury and Matt Gilroy were the others) and the second-ever freshman to win (Paul Kariya remains the lone first-year player to do it, winning the Hobey for Maine in 1993.)

There are some familiar names joining Eichel on the nominee list. Ferris State goalie CJ Motte is back in the mix after being named one of the 10 finalists for last year’s award, as is University of Minnesota netminder Adam Wilcox.

Other familiar names include Boston College’s Ryan Fitzgerald -- a Boston draftee, and son of Pens assistant GM Tom Fitzgerald -- and Providence’s Jon Gilles, who was Calgary’s third-round pick (75th overall) at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
