Sens take next step towards new downtown arena

Eugene Melnyk

Ottawa’s proposed move to a new downtown arena took a significant move forward this week, as Senators Sports and Entertainment confirmed it would submit a proposal for development of land at LeBreton Flats.

More, from CBC:

In a two-sentence statement, a spokesperson for the group that operates the Senators confirmed what they said they’d been “actively considering” earlier this month.

“Senators Sports & Entertainment (SSE) is confirming it will make a submission to the National Capital Commission’s (NCC) Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats,” the statement said.

“In respect of the NCC and its RFQ process, we will not be sharing any details of our submission or make any further comments at this time.”

The Senators currently play at the Canadian Tire Centre. While it’s not that old -- opening in 1996 -- it’s located in Kanata, which is a fair hike out of Ottawa:

LeBreton Flats is a much more centrally-located spot and will soon feature a stop on Ottawa’s light rain transit line. Parties interested in the parcels of land have until Jan. 7, 2015 to submit their proposals.
